Hope someonce can shed some light...I know Dolby Digital is the audio standard on DVD..but does that mean that a studio MUST include a dolby digital soundtrack, or just that if they include a 'digital' track, it MUST be dolby digital.

I ask because i have a title that does NOT have an dolby digital track, only PCM stereo.

thanks

Hi !

What disc is it ???

I think all DVDs must have a Dolby Digital track, but do not have to be 5.1
Are you sure it's not a Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track ?
I don't think that I have any DVDs with a non-compressed PCM track ???

Yep, i'm sure...2 examples:

Steely Dan - Aja (classic albums series)
Niacin - bloos, sweat & beers

both without dolby digital, and say 'uncompressed pcm'

The DVD Spec specifies that a DVD must contaion either a Dolby Digital bitstream or a PCM bitstream. That's what made DTS's entry into DVD so frustrating: DTS could have encoded their audio into the PCM track, as they do with DTS CDs (and LDs), and early adopters wouldn't have needed to buy new DVD players.
