I made my own all-time Top Ten movie list the other night. It had 4 movies that aren't on DVD yet and, by their age, might never be.

Nominations, anyone...???

By the lack of any word from either MGM or Warners (or whoever owns the rights) thus far, The Wind And The Lion might never see the light of day on DVD. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Prrrleezee, give us TWATL soon!!!

Frank, I agree 100% about THE WIND AND THE LION. Also hoping for: THE SPIRIT OF SAINT LOUIS and THE ENEMY BELOW.

Frank & Tom,

One more for The Wind & the Lion. Can't get here soon enough. I would think by the sheer force of psychic will alone we could make this happen. What we lack in numbers, we make up for in enthusiasm.

OK, I'll fess up to one of my favorites that's dying on the vine.... and poll the audience:

What movie did George C. Scott outdo his Patton performance, getting another Oscar nomination in the process?

Well, I'd tell you but I have to admit that I cheated and went to the IMDB to find out (www.imdb.com). I haven't seen the other movies that he was nominated for so I guess I better go check them out!

Cary,

At IMDB, "Carlos" of Australia says that Scott's suicide scene in this movie is the most gut-wrenching in the history of cinema.

I agree.

Do you think we will ever see "Howard The Duck"? (hehe)

I'm desperately hoping they transfer "8 Heads In A Duffle Bag". Stupid movie as well, but definately one of the funniest I've ever seen. Just love Joe Pesci humor.http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

He wasb't nominated, but my favorite George C.Scott movie by a country mile is `The Flim-Flam Man', one of the most underrated movies ever made. Very funny, very charming.

Here's two that are not likely to have been much heard of, and one very popular one:

1. Cold Comfort Farm. Very clever, very British, and some good, devilish fun. Loaded with great actors and actresses (Kate Beckinsale, Ian Mckellan, Rupert (?) from Dark City), and others.

2. Stealing Beauty. Admittedly . . . well, a chick's movie, but some lush cinematography, taken in Tuscany. It's a Bernardo Bertolucci film. It's got Liv Tyler, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes, for those I remember. I thought the LD transfer was good, but I'm sure a DVD transfer would make it worth watching several times again.

3. Once Upon a Time in America. I'm sure a lot of people are waiting on this one.

In the early days of DVD, I saw FLIM FLAM MAN in full-screen, packaged in a jewell box. I might have bought it but I have an S-VHS tape of it I made off TV. My nomination is THE LOVED ONE with Jonathan Winters, Robert Morse, Rod Steiger, Dana Andrews, Milton Berle, James Coburn, John Gielgud, Tab Hunter, Anjanette Comer, Roddy Mcdowell, Liberace, Robert Morley and a very youthful Paul Williams. I'd be amazed if it ever gets released again in any format. I hope I'm wrong...? This is one silly movie. Best wishes!

John Wayne movie made in 1954 in color, but never released to VHS. I have a Vhs copy of the movie "The High and The Mighty" John Wayne as whistling Dan his co-pilot a young Robert Stack and a soundtrack, that I'm so glad I have.

I guess if we want them, we're going to have to 'burn' them for our selves!

I'm with Nick on "Once Upon A Time In America" - the long version of course.

Warners, or someone, announced this a year or two ago and now it seems to have vanished from the face of the earth. Alas this movie was the only reason that I was keeping my laserdisc player. I foolishly sold that and the OUATIA laser disc on hearing the announcement.

Where is the DVD?

Call me wacky but after I sold of my LD collection I realized there are 3 classic comedies (well to me anyways) that aren't available or on any coming soon list:

The Party: this one really shocked my - Sellers at his best.

Top Secret : "I'm not the first guy who fell in love with a girl he met in a restaurant, who then turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist, only to lose her to a childhood lover who she's last seen on a deserted island, and who turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French Underground." - Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer)

Strange Brew - Ok, I'm canadian but still - a classic "We found a mouse in this beer, eh"

So many films, but (in the USA at least) the AFI's #1 film is still not on DVD - Citizen Kane! If I hadn't bought it in the UK I wouldn't have it on DVD. The MPAA and their region limitations have lost any pretense of holding the moral high ground while Carrot Top's "Chairman Of The Board" is available on DVD while Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" is not.

The wonderful film "Tokyo Story" is available only in a VHS edition that is horrible even by the limited standards of VHS. New Yorker Films release makes "Good Times Video" look like Criterion by comparison.

Hell, some of my favorite films have never been released even on VHS! Robert Redford's first film "War Hunt" has never been released in any form. If I hadn't taped it off of TCM when they showed it in letterbox, I'd never have had a good copy.

Anyway, I second the call for "Little Big Man". What a wonderful moving, funny, sad and emotionally wrenching film.

"Louise Pendrake: Well, Jack. Now you know. This is a house of ill fame. And I'm a fallen flower. This life is not only wicked and sinful. It isn't even any fun."

"...but some days, the wind don't blow, the grass don't grow, and the sky ain't blue."

Lawrence of Arabia made it to DVD.
Bridge on the River Kwai made it to DVD.

But what about another Lean widescreen epic struggle? I'm talking about Ryan's Daughter. Gorgeous cinematography of the Irish seacoast. And a worthy storyline: an Irish acquaintance told me that Lean was one of the few that "got it right" about the Irish vs. Brits during this critical period. Mitchum at his most wooden in a role that called for it, and John Mills getting an Oscar for a remarkable character ....

Two Roger Moore films...

THE MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF: A strange, creepy little film that is very terse and entertaining.

SHOUT AT THE DEVIL: Cut badly for U.S. release, the uncut version is a real blast. Lot's of fun, in a mixture of action and comedy that puts Steven Sommer's MUMMY RETURNS and that crap fest TOMB RAIDER to shame.

In other words, there is an actual script.

Vimeo is the home of the Super8 Shooter...

I'd like to see "The Frisco Kid" on DVD. It's a comedy with Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford. I have not seen this DVD anywhere-(I apologize for posting if it does so exsist). If not, is there a way to see if this movie will be produced? Thanks

I just thought of another film I would like to see on DVD: THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! This is a very funny film (circa 1967) with Carl Reiner and Alan Arkin. Don't remember hearing anything about when or if this one will be released. Hope it will eventually get the DVD treatment.

YEAH!! Wenders has discussed it in interviews, but I have doubts that we'll see it before the end of the world.
