Besides looking up the movies online and then remembering the cover art of a particular movie, how do you know? will it say on the case "Criterion"? Also how is "Criterion" pronounced?

Thanks.

Criterion: cry (rhymes with dry) - tear (rhymes with fear) - ee (rhymes with see) - un (rhymes with sun).

It's pronounced "Damn! That's expensive!"

Yes, all Criterion released titles have a banner on the front saying "The Criterion Collection". This is usually if not always at the top. It is also printed on the spine.

From dictionary.com:

cri·te·ri·on (kr-tîr-n)
n. pl. cri·te·ri·a (-tîr-) or cri·te·ri·ons
A standard, rule, or test on which a judgment or decision can be based. See Synonyms at standard.

I guess that "Criterion Collection" DVDs supposed to be "the standard" against which others are judged. For me, it doesn't mean much.

Hi guys,

By far the best site for information on Criterion dvd titles, both current releases and new upcoming releases is http://www.criteriondvd.com/home.asp

If you click on "order" you can also comparison shop the Criterion dvd's between various web merchants as well.

I'm with you on some of that but they do serve a good purpose sometimes. All though a lot of the films they put out are B list art films, they sometimes put out great dvds of great films that would never get the treatment they receive from them. Take the films of W.C. Fields, of the large number of films he did, a lot of them comedy classics, only two dvds containing his works are available on dvd. Both of these are from Criterion. Not to mention the Janus film library, which includes the works of Akira Kurosawa among others. Although I do believe that sometimes their high prices are a bit exorbitant they have their positive side as well.
