What movie do you use to show someone the capabilities of your home theatre system for the best combination of video quality and sound? Is there a particular chapter that you use?

For me, it's usually The Patriot, chapter 8 (battle scene) or Chicken Run chapter 14 (the chicken pie machine.)

For sound and picture but, mostly sound I'll pop-in several scenes from The Haunting DTS ES-Discrete. For picture alone, I'll ussually use the HD demo loop on DirectTV.

Hi Vettster,

don´t use T2 Ue for demoing a true high end projection system. It´s just an old LD transfer blown up for 16:9, and it doesn´t look really good on any CRT projector with a decent scaler or HTPC.

As an audio demo, it´s quite good - but there are better discs around.

Yours,

Philip

I am using T2 "Special Edition" if that makes any difference. It impresses everyone I show. Maybe your system sux? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Vettster,

1. What System do you use? The ability to judge the quality of a transfer depends heavily on the detail level the projection system is able to reproduce. Most of the lower res projection systems perform quite poorly in this domain. If of course you use a Sony G90 or a well calibrated D-ILA, I´m surely not worthy http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

2. It is easy to impress home theater novices. I managed to impress everyone with a humble DAVIS DL S8 projector, using it´s own (bad) scaler and a simple interlaced DVD player. Just turn up the volume... the big picture will do the rest.

Yours,

Philip

I don't show off my system but if I did, I would play my tape of the Titans/Ravens NFL playoff game in high definition. Now that's amazing!
As far as movies go, the HDTV version of Gladiator is probably the best.

I enjoy 3D in spite of HDMI 1.4!

That is the point. It's not hard to impress most people I know. If there is by chance someone that questions the resolution or picture quality, I can throw in a tape of this last Superbowl in HDTV, or flip to ch.199 for the demo. (no one has ever said T2 doesn't look good). So, for a quick demo, T2 looks great (progressive scan) and sounds great (7.1 speaker system)...no problem. Everyone is impressed.

I also think T2 looks just as good as The 5th Element.
Niether look as good as Gladiator.

My ultimate Demo is "Dinosaur". The scene where the Lemurs discovery the dinosar egg in the rain forest at night. Lots of Black and contrast. Black is the most impressive color to demo a good set-up.

Picture quality: still is the first ten minutes of Lost in Space(bad movie however) the blackest blacks on DVD. no edge enhancement therefore detail is fantastic deep rich colors and some interesting action in this chapter.

Surround effects: I still think The Matrix is the benchmark. They did their homework on this one.

Gladiator for video skin tones are great.

U-571 for sub woofer

The Perfect Storm.. even though I have a digital projector the blacks look great in this movie.

Verticle Limit is another one that has great colors.

Saving Private Ryan Colors are off but sharp picture

I agree with the Art
Lost in Space is almost perfect for a quick 5 minute action-packed demo. It's a mixture of stunning visuals and sound that ranks among the best I've seen to date.
The explosions are vivid, both visually and sonically.

Compare it to something like Star Trek First Contact. It has a big explosion near the beginning when the Borg's spacecraft is destroyed. Visually, it's excellent, but it doesn't have the sonic impact Lost In Space has and that really contributes to the overall experience
