I was just curious if anyone knew if Battlefield Earth showing on HBO this month is the theatrical cut or the "edited for home video" cut that is on DVD.

I still haven't actually seen it, but when something is as bad as this reputedly is, there is almost a zen quality to it. It's like watching Plan 9 or something. It is almost comforting to see someone take $100s of millions and really fall on their face. Makes me not feel quite as bad for all the Lucent stock I hung onto.

Oh, it's bad. I mean really bad. What's worse is that I heard Travolta wants to do another sequel. Now thats really bad.

The story has so many holes that don't make sense, and the dialogue is so stupid, that I enjoyed watching how bad the movie was and was a terrible acting job Travolta did.

Here's the thread in the right form (at least by the title of this thread). Maybe HDTV adds context????

Does it matter? Battlefield Earth is so bad that nothing could save it. How much better could the theatrical cut be? There aren't too many movies that I really hate, but I hated this one.

I usually can get some enjoyment from watching bad movies a la Mystery Science Theater. But this movie really pushed me beyond my limits for pain and crap cinema This coming from somebody who loves the Toxic Avenger Trilogy. After sitting through it on HBO I was glad I never saw it in the theater as my whole body felt numb and befouled. I don't mean to offend anyone who liked this film but I would rather have my testicles stapled to my neck than be forced to watch even five more minutes of this cinematic abortion.

I cannot believe this!

I sure am in the minority, as this was one of the best movies I saw in 2000! I actually bought the DVD the next day on EBay!

I believe most people HATE this movie because of two things:

1) The critics hated it, so most people just follow suit.

2) It's fairly hardcore sci-fi and since most Americans don't really enjoy dwelling in extremes, this movie was unappreciated.

I also enjoyed this movie. It was very entertaining!

And no, the HBO-HD version is not the theatrical cut. It's the same edit they used for the DVD and is missing all of the same scenes.

What a shame that version is lost, forever. I finally watched it, and it really is laughable. It's not quite the crapfest I expected, though. It's nowhere near as bad as, say, Pumpkinhead 2:Bloodwings, or Circuitry Man, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4:the Next Generation. The special effects weren't bad. Lapses of logic were quite abundant. I still can't believe in 1000 years of mining the planet's gold they hadn't discovered Fort Knox! Never mind the 1000 year old harrier jets that still work. Those "Elton John/Tommy" boots made me laugh every time I saw them. Can't wait for the TV Series.

I don't listen to the critics (and certainly don't read their reviews) AND I can say I like all movies (some I just like less) and I can sure say I liked Battlefield a lot less!!

I cought the ending when my son was watching that sci-fi movie wannabe on HBO today -what a boring, meaningless flick. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

The Twilight Zone sure had far, far better and more enjoyable sci-fi plots. Perhaps Tom Cruise and John Travolta are the only ones who really enjoy viewing it??...

I am now watching this for the third time. I have no idea why. Maybe there is some sort of Dianetics subliminal thing going on here http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif . What is driving it now, though, is the announcement I just read that HBO started broadcasting selected movies in 5.1 on July 14 with Perfect Storm. After Arliss, I saw Battlefield Earth coming on, so I switched my digital converter to the digital cable (I was an early adopter, so my receiver is DD ready and I have a stand alone DD converter. The DVD is in the optical and my TW digital cable is in the coaxial) and lo and behold I am getting Battlefield Earth in 5.1! Gotta love that sub rumbling http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif Now all I need is for HBO to broadcast in anamorphic.
