After watching pretty much all DVD and digital cable for the past 2 years, I had the opportunity to spend a week with a friend in Nashville who has only a Playstation and VCR to entertain himself.

We watched many a flick on the tape deck from standard old Cheech & Chong tapes bought in the '80's to the Special Edition of American Beauty.

Needless to say, I was amazed at how much I take my DVD Library for granted. No grainy, fuzzy picture. No straight stereo output from crappy TV speakers. I couldn't believe how much better even my $5 Chinese Connection DVD from K-Mart looked than anything on tape.

So, if all you want to do is gripe that your picture is not "perfect", or a studio skimps on their 3rd release of a movie on disc, watch "Up in Smoke" on a 25" Phillips through a VCR. That should hold you for a few days.

OK, you may now continue whatever it was you were doing.

Come on Roland, that's a bit harsh.

I don't spend $3K+ on a set to just stare like a dog. This IS a hobby for most of us, wierd as that may seem.

In interests and hobbies, you get down to the nuts and bolts of it all and critique the minuta. Check out intense golfers, jewelry salesmen, etc.

Do I just watch the Lions play football? NO! I go over everything because I LOVE IT!

I didn't like Mission Impossible 2, but rest assured, I will rent it on DVD, just to watch the "outstanding transfer" (credit to SGHT magazine for quote)! Does this make me wierd? Should I go watch analog cable for a while and just "shut up" as you suggest?

Maybe you should post your thoughts on a Radio Shack forum from now on.

Ehh,

If I view a movie from a VCR I realy don't expect it to compete with DVD movies. So first look at good DVD's and bad DVD's then you can say that it's a crapy transfer.
Take Highlander for an example, it even got a THX stamp on it and it looks like it's a VCD movie.
So yes I'll complain on a bad transfer not just to complain about it but also to tell others to watch out.

I agree with you, "It could be worse" has never been a valid excuse.

And, by the way, the last Region 2 Highlander is quite watchable, although still far from reference material.

It is sort of like in Rocky when he wanted to know why Bergess Meredith was down on him and the answer was "you're a wasted life".If we didn't know how good DVD can be and its potential then we wouldn't complain about the quality of transfers. Good DVD can be one step below film or ten steps. I won't be satisfied with ten steps."When excellence is available good is not enough"!

"When excellence is avilable good is not enough." What wisdom in those words! I second your sentiments, Art!...

If I post a reply about a bad movie transfer, its usually to warn folks who may be considering to buy that DVD. There are some like "Battle Beyond the Stars" that made me feel as though I was watching a very bad copy of a video tape.

Perhaps you all MISSED the winky emoticon in the message header. Damn. Calm down.

Telling someone with only 17 posts to go somewhere else is really cool. Pat yourself on the back.

I understand his point, and it seems it was said A BIT tongue in cheek. But I agree some of us take things a tad too seriously.

It is, after all, about enjoyment.

Considering that movies started in black and white and silent, I agree, we've come along way.http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif But we have a long way to go as well. Enjoy what you have today and anticipate what you'll have tomorrow.

I totally agree with both statements here. A winky is a winky, and I'm not going anywhere. Thanks, Cryo, for noticing the icon.
