I'm looking for (and possibly already own) a DVD that has NO edge enhancement at all. I have plenty of DVDs with excesive EE, but I'm looking for a title that is void of this distraction.

Check out this link http://home.t-online.de/home/bjoern....ml/Page_01.htm

Thanks to jeroen for linking to it in an earlier thread.

This article says "Braveheart", "Titanic", and "The Insider" are some of the best examples. In addition it states that "Titanic" has absolutely no edge enhancement.

I hear The Mexican has little to no EE.

rules of engagement has no EE.
What drives me crazy, is that we will have sooner or later an anamorphic re-release of titanic with lots of EE!Who bets?
Titanic is a very very great transfer.What a shame it's non-anamorphic!

The new release of 'Fargo' is beautiful and has zero edge enhancement.

Did IQ's suddenly drop sharply while I was away?
I enjoy 3D in spite of HDMI 1.4!
Full screen only 3D doesn't cut it!

I have Braveheart and Titanic. Somehow I thought I remember Braveheart having some minor EE...maybe not, I'll give this one a spin again. I agree about Titanic, though that movie has a very soft focus throughout.

I also agree that Rules of Engagement is probably the best DVD (non-animated) that I own for minimal EE.

Hi,

yesterday, I was at an actual movie theater to see "Tigerland" on 16mm film. In some scenes, there were effects that looked like edge enhancement! The moral of the story is: not everything that looks like edge enhancement actually IS caused by edge enhancement.

I´m no friend of edge enhancement myself, but I think some reactions on effects looking like EE are just a little bit exagerated.

Yours,

Philip

Just watched Panic last night. Though, I did notice some minor EE it was very minor and hardly distracting.

I just finished rewatching The Man In The Iron Mask for the first time since it was originally released on DVD several years ago. And it had absolutely no EE. Though, MGM seems to have compensated for this by giving it a somewhat soft transfer. Which along with some minor color smearing prevent it from being reference quality video.

I just checked it out and was surprised to read this about 'Hollow Man':

Quote:
Details are immaculately presented without the slightest evidence of edge enhancement.
I don't know what they were watching with but like all Columbia/Tristar DVDs, it's loaded with edge enhancement.
The EE is very obvious starting with the titles at the start and continuing all the way through.
Whomever wrote the review needs some glasses or needs to sit closer. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Jeroen,

Yes, the April Story DVD is excellent. Besides the great picture, the DTS soundtrack is very nice too.

I saw your location said from Yen Town and I know you like the film Swallowtail. I was to warn you NOT to buy the R2 (Japanese) DVD. Then I saw your HT picture link and it's too late! IMO, the R2 DVD picture is very ugly! I bought it and sold it. The Laserdisc version is WAY WAY better. Too BAD! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Of course, the film is just wonderful. I think I still rate it THE best Japanese movie I've seen.

Btw, if you like Shunji Iwai's work, checkout his first movie http://us.imdb.com/Title?0217862 The story is about a group of elementary school students just before graduation. The movie has the same great feeling like the Swallowtail and April Story. The R2 DVD is quite nice too. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Li On

Frank,
I watched the new digital transfer of Fargo last night and you are right it is great. Very little or no motion artifacts and great color. I watch it with about 5 other people and they all commented on how great it looked then we watched Unbreakable. It looked terrible it was hard to believe it was the same theater setup. Is there any way to tell before buying a DVD to know if it has EE?
Thanks
Mike

I only see 2 problems: the bright band at the bottom of the picture in most dark scenes and the varying black level (dark scenes early in the film are too bright, while later on they are too dark). The softness and grain are obviously intentional (PICNIC has the same look), and the lacking shadow detail is just a result of how they chose to light the film, i'm sure it looked like that in the theater.
Hi Jeroen,

I know the grain is intentional but not the softness. The DVD problem is the overall washout look. The Laserdisc has a much better black level, much solid ,more detail and sharper. The movie intentional docomentary look is bad enough and the DVD make it even wrose! Too bad it's the only choice people can get. Maybe someday they'll have a remaster release! And yes, the movie is just beautiful despit the grainy looking! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hope you'll like the coming Shiji DVD!

regards,

Li On

PS: sorry for the off topic. In my head the most non-EE DVD is still the 'The Insider'.

Christoph,

I, too, enjoyed "Panic." Great casting. The story is so dismal, however, that I am not at all surprised that it was not a great hit. Just too dark to capture a great audience in this country. Art

Art,
well, thanks to 'that country' for inventing DVDs and HTPCs and DLPs so that we can watch movies like Panic at home as if it was at a movie theater http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif.
Anyways, maybe the film will get the attention it deserves somewhat later, who knows.
Cheers

I can't say this is the best DVD, but it is the best classi DVD I've seen--"North by Northwest". A great transfer.

I just watched Chocolat (2000) late this afternoon and I thought that it was a superb transfer. Why they can't release something as good as this in a DTS version is a let down.
