Hi folks,

since Gladiator is one of the very best DVD transfers and i like the movie so much, how could i resist to take a few screenshots?

This is one of my primary reference demos on my system. DVD at or near its best. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/eek.gif

Gladiator on my 9' wide 2.35:1 screen

Pictures taken in the same way as the last few times. Info about it in my HT thread below.

Take care
Bjoern

btw... Coming up soon:
Graphs of Lost World (DD LD vs. DD DVD vs. DTS DVD), The Rock (DD LD vs. Crit DTS/DD DVD), Episode 1 LD, Fight Club DVD, Matrix DVD, Haunting DTS (igh!)

Bjoern,

Outrighteous! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/eek.gif Good looking pics, no doubt about it. The result of a well calibrated display device, mated to a super-duper HT-PC for DVD playback! Them CRT-based projectors still have a lot to offer!!

I would not mind at all seeing you post pics from films like Ben-Hur, The Magnificent Seven, Spartacus (Criterion -if you haven't got it man, you ought to!), Superman: The Movie, and the new Warner's anomorphically re-mastered 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Hope you consider these for such task...

You REALLY know how to take screen shots, Bjoern! Me and a friend tried taking pics of my XG135LC, and they just were not representative of what is shown on the screen.

Hi Tomkat!

nothing special. an old lcd projector, a Denon A10SE( US: 4800), an old but very reliable Kenwood 2x200w amp for the sub ( someday, I'll have to feed these 1500w each http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) but cooled via a fan underneath.
the speakers are JBL cinema speakers (3677-4645C). I can't and won't listen to anyelse (especiallu for cinema sound) http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif, ever!

Roger

no. why do you say that ? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I updated my Gladiator screenshots. There are now 6 shots of higher resolution, instead of over 20 low-res shots.

All of my shots exhibit a blue tint, especially in the darker parts, which is typical for digipics btw. I tried to modify them a little, not too much, though. It would be really difficult to get the color temperature of the pictures to match what i see on my screen (6500k +/- 200K). Also, the color temperature of your monitors is also part of the equation...

They and others can be reached through my screenshot page in my signature.

The new shots (and older ones) can be reached through the screenshot link in my signature.

Here is a quick link to the Gladiator pics:
http://home.t-online.de/home/bjoern....or/page_01.htm

Have fun.

Bjoern,

I viewed couple of odd 35mm reels of Gladiator (with theatrical DTS sound!) just the other night and let me tell 'ya...your pics almost looks like film! I could be envious of the image quality you're getting, but in reality I am happy for you. Great show!

Btw, those Gladiator pics you just posted don't seem to have any EE. Encouraging, indeed. Cheers! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Frank!

if you have read my comments in the 'Best DVD ever' thread, you will see that i rate Gladiator among the "Has slight EE, but isn't bothersome" transfer category. Its one of my favorite transfers.

The reason my screenshots show hardly any EE is that there is still a little more detail on screen that isn't captured through the shots. The little EE that Gladiator has is masked through this little softness.

If all transfers had only the small of EE that Gladiator has, we would be in heaven. Its perfect as it is.

Great flick, great picture, great sound. Wow.

You might like to give the new remastered DVD of Total Recall a spin. It hardly has any EE to speak of. That sure makes for extremely film-like imaging! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Cheers...

I still would like to have it in a "superbit" version, the dreamworks way: no supplements, nothing! , just the video, a simple menu, and a full rate dts!!!
it would sell very well!! the current edition still has some shimmering and ringings , very low but it exists.

Just my observation of the colour tones of these Gladiator screenshots. The blue seems oversaturated (images 7418, 7443, 7465) and the skin tone has a tint of orange (images 7413, 7405, 7408) or magneta (images 7443,7465); and the blood doesn't show up well (image 7465).

No offence intended.

Tk,

no offense taken and i agree 100%! As i said in a post above, all of them have a blue tint, especially in the darker parts. Its very difficult to get the color temp of screenshots right. The auto white-balance function on most digicams seldomly gives accurate colors in difficult situations like this, even on the expensive professional models.

I will try to use manual white balance on my next round of shots. We should take picture of the AVIA grayscale patterns first to verify that the resulting picture has neutral colors and use those settings then. I will let you know whether that worked better.

Best regards
Bjoern

Bjoern,

Your convergence seems to be a little off near the left edge of the screen. Or is this caused by your camera?

Mauri,

good catch! There is actually a slight blue/purple border on *both* sides of the pictures. Have a look at the bright part of the right edge in 7413.

Most of it is due to 'chromatic aberration', an effect that occurs with camera lenses at the edges of pictures. On top of that, i had a slight misconvergence of the blue gun at the top left corner of the picture when i took the pictures. The misconvergence was about 1-2 pixels and only in a 2 inch wide band in that corner.

My NEC's point convergence (over 200 per gun) takes care of that. Misconvergence is usually a total non-issue with a well setup XG. In my case its a bit more difficult, because i use special HTPC timings with very small horizontal front and back porches to maximize brightness. This means i use more of the scanning raster and the closer you come to the horizontal edges of the raster, the more critical gets convergence. While my green and red gun are still very linear even at my extreme porch settings, the blue gun has this slight 2 inch wide band in the left top corner where it starts getting non-linear.

Its easy to adjust with point convergence, though.

Regards
Bjoern

Bjorne: Not to make light of your great pictures and the movie Gladiator, however a prerequisite to Gladiator has to be the movie on DVD Caligula. Gladiator pales in comparison to this one. I know that Caligula is alot older. (1979). The same subject matter, but much more violent & sexual incontent. It makes Gladiator look like a Nickalodeon film. Produced & Directed by Bob Guccione of PentHouse fame. Extremely well acted by Malcolm McDowell as Caligula, also starring PETER O'Toole, Sir John Gelgud. Also starring the PentHouse Pets. Make sure you get the 20th Anniversary Edition which is Digitally Mastered & Fully Restored and shot in 1.85.1 Aspect Ratio.Unedited & Unrated version. Not for the Squeamish or weak of heart. Might be hard to find, but worth seeking it out. Try not to turn your head. You'll have to watch it at least twice to believe what you have seen. Hard to believe Rome was this cruel and devient. This is real madness.

A/V is only as good as your weakest link.

Mr. Hookup,

Sorry, but Bob Guccione's Caligula is nothing more than a porno flick with pretensions to respectability (the movie was made at a time when pornography was attempting to become respectable, hoping to be more acceptable in households across the country).

The fact that he managed to sort of bamboozle actors like Peter O'Toole and screen writers (Gore Vidal dropped out of the project before the movie started shooting, though) to play along doesn't make his flick a real epic, nor does it possess the heroic magnitude that is required to be one, thus has no right in belonging in that genre's cadre...but Gladiator does (the latter actually liberally borrowed its plot line from the 60s Samuel Goldwyn's production of The Fall Of The Roman Empire).

Even so, Caligula is a must see if for no other reason that its freakish approach at film making a much more complex subject matter. Be forewarned, though, as there are several extremely sexually explicit scenes which are shown in typical pornographic fashion: "hard core"...

Frank: I'm not sure why, but seeing Caligula for the first and second time was shocking and puts you into sensory overload. I think I was more taken aback by the violence and brutality that was Rome in these times. I have always been impressed with Malcolm McDowels' acting ability. I am still affected today by the shear violent acts that took place in this film, far more so then by Gladiator. Gladiator was far more predictable, perhaps for the simple fact that Caligula came before it. I don't really remember much about its sexual content, except for those encounters that offended me more for its crimes against humanity rather then its sexual content. Without naming the horrific events that took place in Caligula, I am just far less moved then I was upon seeing Gladiator.

A/V is only as good as your weakest link.

I think of Caligula as one of the worst films ever made. The negative should be burned. Extreme, yes, but that's how much I enjoyed it.

Caligula was directed by Tinto Brass (not Bob Guccione) and originally written by Gore Vidal. That is what got the stars to appear in it. Bob Guccione was the producer and after the film was made, he went in and did inserts for the hard-core footage. The film is pretty awful but oddly compelling. Kind of like a car accident. Is is better than Gladiator? I can't believe anyone can say that with a straight face. Subjectively, you might like it more, but objectively, come on. Not that Gladiator is any kind of masterpiece.
(BTW, my name comes from I,Claudius rather than from the Penthouse movie)
