This is really annoying..My local Blockbuster is carrying only P&S version of mummy returns for rental..
When confronted.the store clerk responds that this is the ONLY version available...while blockbuster.com clearly shows both!

If they wanted to appease P&S lovers..they could have atleast provided SOME widescreen copies

Hollywood Video is the same. All P&S versions and no Widescreen. Very disappointing since I wanted to rent this but now will wait until I can rent a Widescreen version.

Yet another reason Schlockbuster sucks. They completely underestimate their customers. With the opportunity to view my roommates incredible HDTV 16:9 tv- there is no other way to watch these movies in the home. Its not quite the theater experience- but it comes really damn close.

What baffles me is why they wont even carry just a few of the WS version. Especially on a big title like Mummy Returns.

This is also another reason i havent set foot in Blockbuster in years. I will not ever give them another dime.

I thought this was an open matte full screen not P&S.

Open matte Super 35 for the non CGI shots, panned and scanned for the CGI shots.

What scene doesn't have CGI in this movie??

I'd even hold off for the eventual DTS Ultimate Edition next year to coincide with The Scorpion King promotion if you really like this movie.

Not just Blockbuster. Every video store in my area, from Mom & Pop to Chains (Easy Video, Hollywood, et al.) are carrying only the P&S versions.

Here is my Blockbuster encounter:

Chris: Hi, do you have any copies of The Mummy Returns on DVD in?

Girl: Uhh, let me see. (2 mins pass) Yeah, we have some.

Chris: OK good, do you have any widescreen copies in?

Girl: Uhh, all DVD are widescreen sir.

Chris: Uhh, no they are not!

Girl: Let me ask my manager, (comes back) Sir, they are all full screen.

Chris: Are you getting any widescreen copies in?

Girl: No, why would you want bars on you screen anyways? I wish all DVDs were fullscreen, we'd sell more!

Chris : you really have no clue do you? Why would spend thousands of dollars on a widescreen set, to watch a full screen DVD?

This is the first time I've seen this problem with Blockbuster in my area. I rent 2-3 movies there a week and always get a good copy, and when a movie come s both full and wide I can aleays get a wide copy. This pisses me off! Now I have to find a widescreen copy to buy to watch the movie. Is it worth buying?

I would suggest doing business with NetFlix. Myself, I have been a member for about a month and have had a perfectly pleasant experience with them.

If the only choice is to buy in widescreen or rent in 'fullscreen', then I guess I'll just wait for it on HBO. Maybe at least it will be a P&S 16x9 on HBOHD!

HDTV is better than real life--it's higher resolution!

Wasn't the first Mummy only on Starz? If so, I would expect Mummy2 to be on Starz also. I can't tell you how happy I am to have all these different movie channels so that the new movies are split up amongst them. Things would be much better if there were only one.

This is kind of like having two or more yellow pages serving your area. If you're in business you have to pay all these additional companies to reach all the same people you used to reach with one company. Sometimes competition ain't so grand.

The movie sucks, but the trend is troubling. And scary.

Email them. I did: customer.service@blockbuster.com

Funny thing is, some are getting responses about how Blockbuster will not stock Unrated Films, only R rated!

Needless to say, WTF?

If we don't speak up about this NOW, the trend will continue. People need to stop being lazy and take the darn 5 minuts to send an email or make a phone call. There is no excuse for a store to stock ONLY pan & scan or only widerscreen. They should stock both. They won't if we don't speak up.

I hope that everyone takes the time to email the video chains about the BS that they are doing. Every movie rental place in sight of my city is renting only the P&S version. I wrote Blockbuster a nice email about this, and Movie Gallery is next on my list. Well, it wasn't on my list of DVDs I wanted to own, but I guess if I want to watch it I'm buying it.

I bought the P&S version at COSTCO before I realized it said Full Version, and quickly returned it. I then found the widescreen version for $17.99 (a $1.00 cheaper than COSTCO!) at Circuit City.

Popped into BB today (oh, if only it were the last time...) and sure enough P&S only for Mummy2...of course you could buy the widescreen...

Asked the "girl at the counter" and she said it was the studios that are calling the shots...

Which, btw, makes perfect sense...I then went to Sams Club for some shopping...had Mummy2 in the cart...got to the checkout line, and tossed it aside...screw those guys at the studio...

Oh well...they got me for Memento, Terminator and French connection http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Geez, leave me alone already, I have a PSThree!

As a former Lackluster customer, I can tell you a good piece of advice:

QUIT GOING TO LACKLUSTER AND GET A NETFLIX (OR SIMILAR) MEMBERSHIP!

I currently have a 2 for 1 coupon, $5 gift certificate, and free rentals at Lackluster and I still refuse to use their rental service.

Why?

Late fees, punk cashiers, non-DTS versions of EVERYTHING, non-widescreen versions of EVERYTHING ELSE, and ridiculous rates

Does that sum it up?

These places DO NOT want OUR business! It's easier to cater to the masses. We're just a thorn in their side. If everyone would just give up on widescreen for the next five years, they could keep the VHS titles rolling and Lackluster would love it!

I have given up asking basic hi-fi questions of people who literally don't care. I'm now a dedicated online renter.
