This probably shows my age/generation, but for me there's always only been one song that I can lay down and listen to in the dark and totally reset my brain, no matter what kind of hell is going on in life at the time.

Three Days, by Jane's Addiction.

(the above definitely presumes a well set up system and some serious volume too)

I thought that JA's style was noisy grunge/punk. Enjoyable in its own right, but hardly "beautiful". Is that song different? (Their "Beth", perhaps?)

This may not be the most beautiful ever, but it's pretty amazing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSIbfzK2spg

I'd never heard of her before (Imogen Heap) and just saw a mention and checked it out. She's using live looping to build the song on the fly, which is pretty amazing, and it's just beautiful.

She also has another one where she's using a harmonizer effect, which is generally used pretty subtly but she's really make it a major part of the process and it's just an amazing, hair raising tune:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cpSv2mNhhc

Definitely a palpable hit for the UK there. She's great.

I wondered who that was. Everytime I go into the local Barnes and Noble, I hear it.

I do like it a lot - even if Laurie Anderson used the sound to great effect long before. Its a vocoder of some kind.

Speaking of Enya, Clannad's done some pretty nice stuff, too.

You wanna hear something that'll really make your spine tingle, listen to "Dealramh Go Deo" from "Lore".

The Rolling Stones may not be known for "beautiful" songs, but they have a couple.

My favorite one is Memory Motel ....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE_QQJwF_xk

Cant you just picture this girl?:

Hannah honey was a peachy kind of girl
Her eyes were hazel
And her nose were slightly curved
We spent a lonely night at the memory motel
It’s on the ocean, I guess you know it well
It took a starry to steal my breath away
Down on the water front
Her hair all drenched in spray

Hannah baby was a honey of a girl
Her eyes were hazel
And her teeth were slightly curved
She took my guitar and she began to play
She sang a song to me
Stuck right in my brain

Does anyone know the proper pronunciation of "Pachelbel"?

I've always thought it was something like "pock-ul-bell" but I've subsequently heard that the first "l" is silent. Anyone know for sure?

One of the most powerful, imagery producing pieces of music ever created.

Google "Pachelbel" and "pronunciation". Seems like the "l" is not silent.

JA's Three Days is awesome, maybe their best song.

Maybe not "beautiful" in the traditional way, but not generic mall love tunes, what most people seem to think so highly of.

HELL YA!! - as I posted here months ago: Nightnoise's "In this Land" is nighnoise most beautiful song ever.

but in general Nightnoise stuff is all excellent!!! including the above mention!

Montreux has some nice stuff too BTW.

- for old school (say 1920's) Prokofiev's 4th (and prodical son (which 4th is based upon) is a definate runner up.

AFAIK it is : "pock-o-bell"

and that song is indeed a "purdy one".

Personally I'd stayed with instrumental stuff as that is what I prefer: but for a vocal work I must say that IMO one of the prettiest songs (and yes Simon and Garfunkel's works - 5-10 of them all are top of the top here........but this one is after them and above all the rest).

Nancy Griffiths "Light Beyond These Woods".

much of her early work is so so so much better than other's works and even better than her own latter work.
