I would add "What a wonderful world" by Louis Armstrong,

"Nothing Compares to U" by Sinead

I would definitely second those two. WAWW has been put to good use in a number of movies, and never fails to deliver I would think.

I have to admit that I've always had a thing for good looking women with the shaved head thing. There was a stupor-model there for a while with that look, and she was way too sexy for her folicles.

The Live version of "Everybody Hurts" is spectacular on the "Perfect Square" concert DVD. REM slows it down just a bit ... truely gorgeous tune.

I do like the "Oh Holy Night" recommendation.

I will throw in a french tune, "Je Crois Entendre Encore"
and "Stairway To Heaven".

Thats actually a Prince tune, performed by Sinead.

I was trying to think of that song for my list, thanks!

Prince has another one that I wish some chick would record. "Condition Of The Heart", its pretty with him singing it, but would be awesome from a falsetto female voice.

In the classical realm, I'd nominate that Adagio for Strings piece that is the main theme for the movie Platoon. It's a beautiful piece of work, at least the part that is used in the movie.

Pop songs I would submit as among the most beautiful:

Stardust lyrics by Mitchell Parish music by a very young Hoagy Carmichael performed by Nat King Cole

Till There Was You written by Meridith Wilson (would have to think about my favorite version)

Yesterday written by Lennon and McCartney performed by The Beatles (alright really written and performed by Paul)

Memory by Andrew Lloyd Webber, etc (again, not sure of my favorite version)

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing ...
I said nothing can take away these blues,
'Cause nothing compares ...
Nothing compares to you

It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong?
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you
went to the doctor guess what he told me
Guess what he told me?
He said, girl, you better have fun
No matter what you do
But he's a fool ...
'Cause nothing compares ...
Nothing compares to you ...

All the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try
'Cause nothing compares ...
Nothing compares to you

I do love that song, makes me cry a little with the memories.

I also like Judy Garlands Somewhere Over the Rainbow even though its a very old tune.

Guns n' Roses - November Rain

I'll continue with contemporary music, and fall into my romantic and sentimental mood.

And from The Master:

lol. Dolly's version is good too, and I did know it was her song. But I have to say that Whitney gets with it on this song. Here are a couple more recommendations:

*National Anthem (Star Spangled Banner)*
*What a wonderful world*
*Theme from Titanic* Yes, it is overplayed but still beautiful

Wow, lots of great songs listed so far.

"Because" by the Beatles is probably the most beautiful set of sounds I have ever heard. It works on me on some primeval level, it literally brings tears to my eyes.

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is another song of haunting beauty.

The whole "Heaven or Las Vegas" album by Cocteau Twins.
"Carribean Blue" by Enya.
"God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys.
"Carrying Cathy" by Ben Folds.

And, lest you think I'm a big softy, "Theresa's Sound World" by Sonic Youth.

"I'LL SHOW YOU THE LIFE OF THE MIND!!!" - Barton Fink

Yes, I'm in absolute agreement with this too. Among her best: Watermark, China Rose, her recording of Silent Night ... hell, so many.

I think Righteous Bros: Unchained Melody is pretty special too.

I'm kind of fond of the love theme to Year of Living Dangerously too (Vangelis, l'Enfant).

Now that I think of it I am still searching for the most beautiful song I ever heard. It was on a PBS special about the current descendants of the Mayan civilization. A small group of them was singing one of their ancestral/tribal songs. I was transfixed, mouth agape, at the absolute, stunning beauty of the melody. I have bought many CDs and periodically search for recordings of traditional Mayan music. So far I have come up empty. I don't even know the name of the show on which it appeared. It was 10, perhaps 15 years ago, and though I have forgotten the tune, I have not forgotten its impression on me.
