After seeing Slumdog Millionaire recently, I'm compelled to revive this thread and throw "Latika's Theme" by AR Rahman to the mix. The whole soundtrack is amazing actually, and to me was the best thing about the film.

I just gladly spent $100 on itunes buying songs from this thread. Best source I have ever come across for great tunes I never heard of or passed over through the years - and I own close to 5000 albums! Take the time to read it on a slow day and you will be rewarded. Definitely an important thread that should not be allowed to die and is still relevant.

You saved a thread's life today.

Two absolutely beautiful selections from Ennio Morricone's compositions are the main themes to Duck, You Sucker and Once Upon a Time in the West. He has a plethora of beautiful score selections, but these are among the top with vocal backings.

Other beautiful pieces of music with captivating vocals include "Somewhere in My Memory" by John Williams & Leslie Bricusse, and "Storybook Love" by Willy DeVille. These are excellent when in the right mood.

I think that one was still good. The one that got lost is Just For Now:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25VGd...eature=related

This is where she's building up the song live using a looper. That takes some guts. Any mistake just keeps going and going and going.

And, BTW, the version of Hide and Seek with the video is nice, since it's pretty visually striking. And this is on a channel that I hope will at least give her a millionth of a penny for each play.

Oh, and check this out. This is Imogen Heap singing with Jeff Beck's band. Great tune. She looks absolutely gorgeous. His playing is so stupidly tastey that it's ridiculous. And of course his cutie bass player, Tal Wilkenfeld is there. Check out some of her stuff if you like Jaco Pastorious type music, she's incredibly talented for any age but for her age just stupidly so.

BTW, you know that you've made it as a guitarist, when Imogen Heap is on the stage looking like that and most of the guys are watching you play guitar.

And from that same show, with Beck doing possibly one of the most beautiful rock instruments ever. And it really shows off Tal's playing. She does a smoking solo, and I think really pushes him in his next part to step up.

Well, one of the most beautiful songs in my opinion is Forever Autumn by Jeff Wayne =D
I obviously heard it in War of the Worlds and it soon became an all time favourite.

It's hard to pick just one song.
But as of the moment, I'm so hooked into Airplane by BOB ft Hayley Williams.
i really love that song. I love the melody!

I began this thread almost five years ago on a whim. I love music and there's just something about a beautiful song that grabs me unlike any other form of art. As I visited this thread over the years, some things about beautiful songs became more and more obvious and I'd like to share them, if you'll indulge me.

First, some of you peoples' ideas about what's beautiful truly boggle my mind ;-). I mean this with some honesty and some tongue in cheek. I listened to most of the songs that I could find, and while I would agree that the vast majority were good, if not great, songs, I would be hard-pressed to call many of them beautiful. Pretty, maybe. Sweet, possibly. But hardly in the league with the truly beautiful.

I'll compare songs to women. Everyone's high school had a bunch of nice girls. The cheerleading squad was full of great ladies - nice looking, pretty, hot, sexy, etc. Most of them, you'd be proud to take home to Mom or date or eventually marry. But there's always that one girl. The one that made you a little sad inside because you know you could never be with her. When you saw her, you physically ached. The one that you know 50 years from now, you'll still be able to see her and think, Whoa. She's the beautiful one. Most of the songs listed in this thread were the cheerleaders, in my opinion.

I also started to see some common traits among the truly beautiful songs. Most of them fall in the simple category, not overly complex or impressive in their musical technique. There are a couple exceptions, but for the most part the truly beautiful ones are also pretty easy to play/sing from a musical standpoint. They are also almost all fairly slow. And soft (or at least have soft parts). Here was the really interesting stuff: many of them are from at least 20 years ago - there's only a handful from the past 20 years and the last 5 years is sorely under-represented. I tried to listen comparitively to some of the more recent ones mentioned and almost every time, I came away thinking, No, no, no - there's no comparison. A good song, but not among the most beautiful. I am not one of those people that believe that all the good music died a long time ago. Much of my music consumption is modern stuff from the last 5 years.

I was also intrigued by a few artists that kept getting mentioned with often no concensus on the most beautiful of their songs: The Beatles and Elton John being most notable. Some people just seem to have this ability to make many of their songs beautiful.

Continued in next post...

Probably the biggest surprise from a personal standpoint was the repeated mention of Pink Floyd. I'm a PF fan, but have oddly never really thought about whether their stuff was beautiful. Another person posting in this thread has already pointed out the seeming contradiction between many of the ugly lyrics juxstaposed against arguably beautiful lyrics. But even I had to admit that every once in a while I get an itch that can only be scratched by the song Comfortably Numb. From this day forward, I'm calling it one of the most beautiful songs ever.

Lastly, I also noticed that many very popular categories of music were not generally mentioned or were under-represented, things like rap, R&B, soul, country. I wonder if that's more likely due to the demographics of AVS Forums or possibly the fact that these types of music, while often great, have difficulty producing a truly beautiful song. I'm a huge fan of hard rock and found it strange that even among the plethora of power ballads sung over the past 40 years, that it's tough to find many that I would say are at the top of the heap in terms of beauty.

After putting a bunch of thought into it I figured I'd suggest a few that come awfully close (at least in my mind.)

Tesla - Love Song

I've compiled a list of the most often mentioned songs that I consider the most beautiful and added a couple that I didn't see mentioned anywhere in the thread (the last two) that are just as beautiful.

Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Trouble Water
Sarah Brightman - Time to Say Goodbye
Enya - May It Be
Annie Lenox - Into the West
Cat Stevens - Wild World
John Lennon - Imagine
Harry Nillson - Without You
Louis Armstrong -What a Wonderful World
Guess Who - These Eyes
Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
Sarah McLachlin - Angel
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
Danny Boy
Beatles - Long and Winding Road
Wings - Mull of Kintyre
John Denver - Annie's Song
O Holy Night
Amazing Grace
Damien Rice - Blower's Daughter (runner up: 9 Crimes)
Elton John - Your Song (although I think more people would say Candle in the Wind)
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Josh Groban - You Raise Me Up (possibly February Song)
Wings - Mull of Kintyre

I am also listing a few that I either discovered as a result of this thread and/or feel that they are possible additions to the list that were only mentioned in passing.

This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren
Michelle Featherstone - Stay
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
Christopher Beck - Close Your Eyes
Coldplay - The Scientist
Seal - Kiss From a Rose
Live - Overcome
ELP - Lucky Man
Evanescence - My immortal

Finally, my vote for MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG EVER:

Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Waters

Yours is a common view, but I don't subscribe to it. I think the older songs merely benefit from the sentiment and nostalgic memories associated with them which become inextricably linked to those songs and add to their emotional weight or gravitas. Being exposed to those "classic" songs while you were growing up, developing emotionally, experiencing high school, college, first loves, first marriages, etc., it becomes nearly impossible to separate the long held emotional memories and render a more sober comparative assessment of music old to new.

These older songs have gained an advantage which relatively newer songs cannot compete with. Often has little to do with superior quality of the compositions, though that certainly can be true at times as well.

Mourning the disappearance of the -ly suffix. Words being cut-off before they've had a chance to fully form, left incomplete, with their shoelaces untied and their zippers undone. If I quote your post (or post in your thread) without comment, please check your zipper.
