I finally joined the world of surround sound with a mid-range 5.1 set-up.

Can anyone recommend some good movies/scenes to put the new system through its paces? Any suggestions welcome!

Right now I'm thinking:
Saving Private Ryan
Jurassic Park
Superman Returns

(Note I can play BD and HD-DVD movies as well as regular DVDs if there are any next-gen releases with particularly good sound).

Jurassic Park T-Rex Scene.

You watch that....you'll know if you have a good or bad subwoofer!

Another with a really really high quality sound mix is Tears of the Sun. Very subtle and complex mix that really shines on a well setup and properly calibrated system.

And course the above suggestions which are all superb.

Instead of the typically recommended landing at Normandy scene, fast forward to the scene in the church where the two Toms (Hanks and Sizemore) are having a conversation. The use of surrounds is subtle but effective, as it makes you literally feel like you're in a larger space. Goes beyond the gee-wiz factor of most demos and shows what surround sound is really capable of.

Super Speedway (and SE?)
Very good list -- close to what I would have posted.

I would add:

King Kong
Lord of the Rings Extended Editions (all three)
Hellboy
Spider-Man 2 Suoerbit
Last of the Mohicans Director's Cut DTS (cannon attack on Fort William Henry)

Play that last one real loud. Your neighbors will call the police . . . or the National Guard. :D

super speedway is excellent.

LOTR, especially the first scene of the first movie (the fellowship), the battle and the shock wave. the shock wave will definatly separate good from bad subwoofers at reference.

I'm not sure which DVD this is but that's what I think I have, and IMO it's a really ugly mix. It sounds like they took stereo and ran it through a pro-logic decoder and then encoded that as 5.1. It sounds really bad, surrounds are in mono and there's lots of dialogue leakage into the surrounds. Also the PQ is poor.

Surprised no one has recommended U571...depth charges popping over your head, the sound of the hull creaking all around you, puts you right in the sub.

I meant to put Das Boot Superbit in my list. That movie is way better than U-571 (i own both movies).

One to add: We Were Soldiers

Once the fighting starts....dayum! The copters, bullets whizzing in all directions, mortars, and then the firebomb scene. Great exercise for your speakers and sub.

Oooops, looks like that was nominated already. Well, I second it.

I am looking to get this one, in WS DTS, but surprisingly no one has it in stock (I am not willing to pay extra $$ on auction sites). Anyone have a phone number for Mr. Spielberg, just to let him know he is losing business and needs to quickly restock Walmart shelves ..... :D :D

This DVD was released twice. First one had low LFE and second one was great. Read page 1 and 2 of this forum for the thread about the differences in the discs. Email the seller to verify which one they have.

Wow he thinks just how I do!

I’ve also noticed this. Whether it was 70mm six-track Dolby Stereo transfer from the original road show print and if the surrounds are in monaural then the film would be Dolby format 42.

But if it was a quick one, then the film distributors own us an explanation! And these parasites should give us are money back for shame!

While some may not care for the movie, the plane collision scene from Fight Club will knock your underwear loose. Short scene, but pretty dramatic sound wise. Especially if you are sub-worthy.

Stephen.

Chances are very good that I was drinking when I posted the above.

Watched Basic tonight, haven't seen it in a while. It's makes quite a bit of use of all the channels, especially when they are out training in the jungle during a hurricane.

I'd use clips so I wouldn't have to through those other tedious parts in a movie- like plot, story and character development :-)

Jurassic Park III DTS. Try the T-Rex vs. (what ever that huge dino was) fight scene right after the plance crash. Good surround and bass that will reall ytest your sub.

Also if you want that holosonic surround try the Mines of Moria scene from LOTR Fellowship Extended Edition DTS. Try it from when they enter the mines right up to the Balrog attacks. Great surround and bass. The echoes make you feel like you're there.
