Yeah, but who buys SD-DVDs? And what's worse, it's playing at the IMAX for only $3 more right across the street from the multiplex.

I do...for offbeat, independent films that I know won't be coming to BD anytime soon.

"Yeah, but who buys SD-DVDs? "

What's SD mean, standard definition? If so what kind of a fool question is that?

I just picked up my tickets to see this at the IMAX this Saturday . Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

I also took some other suggestions made earlier in the thread and am currently half way through reading "Gates of Fire" (a good read).

I made the mistake of going to see a theatrical film at an IMAX theater (the last Harry Potter flick). Never again. The distortion at the edges is ridiculous. Really, only the center third or so is properly in focus and without distortion. Also, they just couldn't get enough light on the screen. When I later saw it in HD on HBO, it was a revelation.

Blame that on your projectionist. Mine is impecable. The IMAX presentation is always stellar in visual and sound as well it should be. If it's not I would demand my money back.

How do they project 35mm with scope aspect on an IMAX screen? Or do they?

They don't. I think they convert the film over to LARGE FORMAT FILM. As I understand a select few of the IMAX theaters are digital as well (not mine, but that would be a hoot to see).

When I went to see Superman Returns IMAX some moron pulled the fire alarm (scary enough in a crowded movie theater) and they let the movie run when we were outside. When we asked them to reset the movie to where it left off they said they couldn't roll the movie back because of the nature of the tech.

And you're just picking up on this now? Haven't you seen any of the trailers and previews that's been running on TV for months? Or what about Sin City, or haven't your heard about that movie?

Speaking of which, I just heard that Frank Miller will also be involved with Will Eisner's The Spirit, and the movie will be shot all on blue screen, similar to Sin City and 300, sepia tones and all. Should be interesting...

there was a forgettable tv movie around '87 or so with Flash Gordon's Sam J Jones as the Spirit and a pre DS9 Nana Vistor.

That's a shame. I saw Harry Potter at the Imax in Reading, MA, and it was top notch.

I just got my tickets to see 300 in the local Imax theatre this weekend. Can't friggin' wait.

Well Dave there are more people familiar with The 2nd Persian War then with Sin City and more familiar with Herodotus than with this Miller fella. There may actually be some people drawn to the picture from a love of history rather than a love of the funny papers, can you imagine that?

1.Sin City was extremely popular in the theaters and even more so in home rentals.

2."Funny Papers?" Sorry, but they're actually called comics these days, and 300 and Sin City were both based off of them, and if you don't watch TV or go to the movies (you obviously do, you've started threads), I find it hard to believe you've been oblivious to this movie in particular, which as I've said has had previews and trailers running for at least 3mos on TV and 6mos (if not longer) in the theaters.

As for the draw the movie brings in for people based on the historical element, will be comparitively tiny compared to the other two. People will know this movie as the one by the guy who did Sin City, based on the Frank Miller graphic novel 300 (book sized comic), and rightfully so.

Dave---Your explanations are sensible but yet the fact is that a great many people have no interest in comic books and movies made from comics and information about such things is filtered out when (and if) encountered. Our friend Gaffo is evidently one of those people. And why not, we all have to filter the vast amount of information thrown at us these days, some filter this and some filter that.

I, being a fairly well informed man, am aware of Sin City yet I've no interest in it at all, neither in the comic nor the picture.

I bought the 300 comic several years ago from curiosity and found it, well, let's just say I prefer the depth of traditional books.

Funny papers--comics; same thing. One can use synonyms if one wishes.

Regards.

You will find that the reading market these days for "comics", and the long form, the, "graphic novel" is made up of mainly adults, and the term "funny papers" is taken as a pejorative.

Intended or no, it would be a condescending term at best to the crowds that read the "funny papers". Think of this as an education and cynicism in the same breath. ;-)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. ^_^;

I saw a sneak preview for the film last night. (Shout out to my brother for the ticket.)

If you liked what you saw in the trailer, you'll certainly enjoy the film. This is the type of movie that totally annoys some critics. They're irritated beyond belief that a film so obvious and brute in it's presentation can entertain masses in droves.

The film does have some chuckling akward moments, ("Treason! Treason!" - You'll know it when you see it...) but I left entertained. More so than most films put to celluloid.

Well, this will be the first time seeing a full feature film on the IMAX for me. I talked to a friend who saw the last Harry Potter movie on it and said it looked outstanding. I'll report back on Sunday.

That's OK, perhaps people that read comic books and get offended when that's not respected should be condescended to.

Many today aren't simply happy to do as they please but feel they must be respected as well, I don't hold with that. Toleration and approval aren't the same thing; the former I gave easily, not so the latter.
