Rather than let the concert DVD thread get further hijacked...
Here is your chance to make your dream band.

You need the following.
1 drummer
1 bassist
1 guitarist
1 singer
1 keyboard player

You may also include additional players
(backing vocals, percussion, 2nd guitar, dj, rapper....)
But, keep the band realistic in size. (Smaller than P-Funk! )
Take into account the total package and back up what you say!
(ie - A great drummer who sings is more valuable than an equal drummer who doesn't...).

That's easy, it's the dead.

No, not those dead, these dead:

Drums: Keith Moon
Bass: John Entwistle

Organ: Billy Preston

Well, the dream band I'd personally want to see for my own enjoyment and edification:

Drums: Simon Phillips
Guitar: Shawn Phillips (no relation)
Bass: Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant)
Vocals and Guitar: Kevin Gilbert
Keyboards: Me (of course )
Keyboards and Violin: Eddie Jobson

Unfortunately 2 of those guys are R.I.P.

An alternate version for a more proggy pop sound would be:

Vocals, Piano and Guitar: Eric Stuart (10cc)
Vocals & Bass: a young Paul McCartney
Drums: Steve Smith
Piano: Bill Payne (Little Feat)
Keyboards: Steve Lukather

And the old school jes a rawk band:

Guitar: Mick Ronson
Drums: Bun E, Carlos (Cheap Trick)
Bass and Vocals: Doug Pinnick (King's X)
Vocals: Robin Zander (Cheap Trick)
keyboards: no keys in a rawk band!

Don't taze me, bro!!

I had this typed, then hit the back button by mistake.

JimKW - I like your list!
Mine is limited to those who are still among the living & I'm trying not to duplicate:

Drums: Neil Peart
Bass: Flea
Guitars: Carlos Santana & David Gilmour
Keyboard: Steve Winwood
Vocals (I'll probably take some crap for this): Christina Aguilera (eye candy & man, she can sing!),
with Gilmour or Winwood taking the "a guy must sing these" songs

This was fun until I imagined Keith Moon (drums) and Jimmy Hendrix (guitar) together and my head exploded.

Two bands

#1

Guitar---Scotty Moore

Bass---Bill Black

Drums---DJ Fontana

Singer----Elvis Presley

#2

Guitar----Steve Cropper

Bass----Donald Dunn

Drums----Al Jackson

Keyboards---Booker T. Jones

Trumpet----Wayne Jackson

Sax----Andrew Love

Singer----Otis Redding

As for the fella that thinks Rock bands don't have keyboards all I can say is Jerry Lee Lewis. Or Fats Domino. Or Felix Cavilare. Or---you get the point.

Well lets see, it will most likely include a lot of indie rockers since thats what I like.

Drums: Jerimiah Green (Modest Mouse, Vells)
Bass: Les Claypool (Primus)
Guitar/Banjo/Vocals: Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse, Ugly Cassanova)
Guitar/Vocals: Doug Martsch (Built to Spill, Tree People, Halo Benders)
Guitar/Keyboard/Synthesizer: Dan Galucci (Modest Mouse, Murder City Devils)
Guitar/Female Vocals: Amy Millan (Stars, Broken Social Scene)
Horns: The people that play horns for Broken Social Scene
Violin: Have to have one for some songs, but not sure who

Key song writers: Isaac Brock and Doug Martsch

What can I say I like large bands. The best show I ever saw was Broken Social Scene in Seattle in 2005. They had upwards of 15 musicians on stage and total blew me away.

Drummer: John Bonham(Phil Collins a close second along with Lars Ulrich)
Bassist: Paul McCartney
Lead Guitar: Eddie Van Halen or Joe Perry(this is a tough call for me! )
Lead Singer: John Lennon
Keyboards: If neccesary, David Bryan

There are alot better singers out there then Lennon, but I CANNOT split up and have the chance to have McCartney and Lennon writing together.

Combining some of these player's styles could get ugly. I think i would just take an existing good band, and tweak it.

For example the Foo Fighters have one good songwriter, but they really need a second writer to achieve greatness. How about Kurt Cobain?

I'll give it a try.

Vocals Rodger Daltry (Who)
Bass Jack Bruce (Cream amoung so many others)
Guitar Gary Moore (The Gary Moore Band)
Drums Alex Acuna (Weather Report)
Keyboards Rick Wakeman (Yes and The Strawbs)

OK, so why *again* do we need a bigger one?

You must be a huge Rainbow fan to know Bobby Rondinelli. I remember when he played in a club called Speaks on LI with cover bands.

Lexa---The Strawbs?!? That was a very good band, very Catholic (large C as in Roman) in sound and thinking.

I haven't thought about them in a long time, think I'll listen to Grave New World today. Thanks for the prompt.

Ghosts is still a favorite of mine. Deeps Cuts and Hero and Heroine (I hope I am spelling that right) were also great. Funny, I never really thought of them as Catholic. More Renaissance really (BTW, that is another good band).

Funny
Not the same circumstances but this reminds me of a few years back. I went out to record Black Sabbath on their initial, (original lineup), reunion tour. Bill Ward was recovering from heart problems, so for the entire tour they had Vinny Appice, (complete with his own enormous drum kit), soundchecked & standing by, in case Bill wasn't up to playing on any given night. Never happened while I was around fortunately.

Actually, the best drummer I ever saw was Terry Bozio. He played with Zappa, Missing Persons (which was the most successful of all) and the UK. I just think he is too technical for R&R. Acuna I have heard do some really heavy beats with Weather Report so rock wouldn't be a stretch for him.

Funny story...Good thing he was alright.

I once saw Joe Walsh and he was so drunk he slured his words and only played for 45 min. Packed house too. He could have used someone standing by but they would have had to change the name on the tickets!
