I saw the trailer this weekend for the movie titled The Astronaut Farmer with Billy Bob Thorton in it. It looked rather interesting. I'm curoius now to find out if he launches it. It looks like it releases on Feb 23.

I saw it today. I'd call this one a "Formula Feel Good" movie, suitable for the entire family, and worth a B+. I would say it's worth a rental. If you saw and liked Field of Dreams and October Sky, then you will like this film - it has elements of both. Not to mention subtle homages to MASH, Armageddon, 2001, The Right Stuff, and Apollo 13.

Bruce Willis has a cameo role as a famous astronaut, but he is uncredited.

Tim:

This film has humor and it's a bit goofy, but it works well - although it's being billed as a Comedy, which it is not. Great Cinematography and average special effects.

I'd have to strongly disagree with Gary's opinion. Being a space and rocket nut, I'd been looking forward to this movie for months. I was really disappointed...it was just plain boring. Two hours of virtually nothing happening. One dimensional characters, just bad. It tried to be quirky but fell flat on its face. I had a bad feeling when I went to see it at our local art house theater and after a week it was already relegated to the smallest screen in the 12 screen theater. In Field of dreams you cared about the characters and their actions at least made some sense. Not here.
As much as I wanted to like this, it was just plain dumb, dumb, dumb. Not even worth the rental, maybe not even worth the two hours wasted when it comes to free on-demand cable in a year.
Sorry (really sorry because not many space themed movies out there).

This is a film that features slow steady and nuanced character development. But if you didn't care for the other Indie films by the Polish brothers, then I would not watch this one.

On the other hand, if you actually liked Twin Falls Idaho, (my favorite Polish brothers film) then you will like this one. But it's not an action movie or a an SF epic or any other genre with a name. It is unique as IMHO are all good Indies.

This reminds me of that terrible TV project Andy Griffith did in the 70s. He built a rocket in a junkyard if I remember correctly, and the FBI or someone kept trying to shut him down.

I unfortunately remember that mess. It was called "Salvage".

Have you guys actually seen the film? I also saw all 18 episodes of Salvage 1 and this film bears little resemblance to that creaky low budget TV show that lasted one season.

For one thing this Billy-Bob character "Charles Farmer" is a former Air Force test pilot who flew the X-15 and went to NASA's astronaut training. He has a degree in Aviation Engineering from the Air Force academy. He bases his design on the Atlas rocket that did in fact put many a Mercury Program astronaut into earth orbit. He uses salvaged engines and other hardware from NASA/Air Force junkyards. His final act is to spend $50,000 he can't afford on the 10,000lbs of fuel he needs, which he cannot manufacture. His rocket does appear a little undersized - I estimate 2/3rds scale - but that doesn't detract any more than the undersized Harrier jets in True Lies.

The bottom line for me is that the rocket is done well enough to justify that "suspension of disbelief" that allows one to immerse yourself in a fantasy.

This film is entertaining. You will not regret the time spent.

Just rented AF and the picture quality is godawfully bad! Why do they cram an entire movie on a single layer SD DVD and to make things worse, the entire movie only takes about 2.6 Gb of space!!!

oh, it's a cute inspiring movie and I personally love it, btw. It's the PQ that's an absolute letdown.

This was possibly the worst transfer I have ever seen. The first 20 minutes were almost unwatchable and it improved only slightly towards the middle and end. Someone should lose their job over this piece of crap - yes it's that bad. Especially on my 106" screen.

Watch for Home Theatre 2.0 pics coming soon!

The movie was decent. Nothing Amazing. As said, the video quality of the DVD was horrible. Be sure to checkout Thorton's Sling Blade skit in the bonus features.

Hmm. I was considering a blind buy on this. It sounds good, but if the DVD quality is poor, I don't want in. I guess it goes into the Netflix queue instead...

It's a good film and suitable for family viewing. The image in the ttheater was quite good, the disk is a disapointment.

Watched AF last night with the wife & kids, overall we thought it was a pretty good movie.
I do agree the picture quality wasent all that great, quite grainy but still tolerable.

I tried to watch this last night. Horrible PQ. I thought I was experiencing problems with my system. You know it's bad when your 7 year old says it looks bad.

It was pretty nasty. I believe the movie itself only took up 2.6 gigs.

PQ may not have been great, but fwiw, I thought it was an excellent family movie (yes, Field of Dreams, October Sky, etc).

I watched this last night. I liked this movie, and I agree that it's similar in type to October Sky, etc. Although October Sky was a bit more 'realistic'. I think as long as you can suspend enough belief to buy into the thought of some guy on a farm building a rocket from junk yard parts, then you will like this film. I rented this movie because it's on SD-DVD. However, I would probably buy it if it ever comes out on HD-DVD/BD. Sometimes I'm a sucker for quirky, feel-good movies.

In our area it's available in HD as a pay movie on demand (Time Warner-SC). That may address the PQ issue versus the DVD release. Or maybe it's a poor quality film (technically, not artistically) and won't look any better in HD. I haven't seen it yet but hope to this week.

I suspect other TWC areas have it too, since they tend to make things available uniformly nationwide, subject to the capabilities of the local headend or regional distribution network.

I finally got around to seeing this movie. I saw it was on one of the movie channels and Tivo'd a HD showing. Enjoyable and fun movie.

It was sorta goofy, but Billy Bob is always watchable, as are Virginia Madsen (! oh yeah), Bruce Willis, Bruce Dern, and J.K. Simmons. Darn good cast I'd say, though I did wish the material had been just a Little Bit more believable. As others have said, a good family movie.

BTW the DVD disc is oddly (poorly) encoded for the first reel or so, but if you stick with it the picture improves immensely x minutes into it. Sorry don't recall specifics but it's like someone was asleep at the console when they encoded it...

Oh, yes, definitely not a believable movie. After seeing Madsen in it I realized I hadn't seen The Hot Spot in a while so I watched it next. And with JC in it, I got two, two mints in one.
