Freaks is kind of different, sort of in the line of Chaney movies (plus it is released on a DVD in a different series). Chaney's horrific films, aside from Phantom and Hunchback- and the lost London After Midnight (its being lost we can thank MGM for partially, as they loved to destroy prints of movies they remade [Mark of the Vampire being the remake], and the one known print of Midnight was destroyed in a warehouse fire in the sixties)- are sort of a reaction to the devastation of WWI, with all Chaney's various mutilations. What a confusing sentence.
Anyway, this little group of horror films from the thirties was a reaction to Universal's horror pictures for the most part, and it makes one wish MGM had made more, since the rest of their output from that decade-unless it came from some sort of bestseller- is pretty lame.
