Picking the worst ones are a lot easier. I had to pick Star Trek II because the gap between it and the first movie is the greatest compared to the others even though my favorite of the list is GF2.

T2 all the way. It may be a product of my age (I wasn't old enough to have seen T1 in the theater) but I will never forget how enthralled with this movie I was in the early 90's.

Some very good sequels listed; I agree that "Wrath of Khan" deserves special recognition based on the fact that it was so vastly superior to the original Star Trek movie it followed. "Godfather II" was excellent, but the original was also excellent. "Empire" was great and entertaining, but so was "Star Wars." "T2" was a very pleasant surprise, but "Terminator" was great in it's own right. As for the "LotR" films, I think they all captured the spirit of the books very well, but the third had the most going for it.

Like/love all the movies listed, but EMPIRE is my all-time fave.

And it's Episode 5, BTW.

I was facing this same dilemma. Is a "best sequel" a movie that carries on the tradition of the original, or one that greatly improves upon the original? For the latter category, from this list I would have to pick Spider-Man 2, because I thought the first Spider-Man was awful and the second one was moderately watchable, which counts as a big improvement. However, I still don't think it's a great movie by any stretch, so that pretty much disqualifies it.

My pick would be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The first two Harry Potter movies were borderline unwatchable. Azkaban was a quantum leap improvement and a damn good movie on its own. The later sequels have fallen somewhere in between.

My vote goes to Aliens based on one particularity about it. That is, it is one of the only sequels that has managed to effectively change genres from the original and yet still equal or exceed the quality and entertainment of the original. Alien is now a classic horror movie, while Aliens is a classic action movie (though both are rooted in sci-fi).

the empire strikes back (episode 5, actually)...

this movie had to live up to HUGE expectations, and it did it in spades... while any number of the others had a certain expectation level leading up to them, none of them even touch the level of anticipation that empire created...

this poll is going to show an age bias i think... not that that's a bad thing, but if you weren't around for it, you can't understand how good of a movie empire was, given the context that it was released in...

many of the other movies are really good (most notably godfather 2 and wrath of khan), but empire rules the roost...

Empire. As others noted there were huge expectations for it. It not only delivered but many still consider it the best of the Star Wars films.

Godfather 2. best sequel ever.

Empire is easily better than the other 3, but not as good as GF2

I voted Empire Strikes Back just because i had to vote, but to me its a 3-way tie:

Empire
T2
Aliens

Incredible movies, and amazing how they took great movies and were able to make a sequel that was even better!

I also liked X2 better than the first X-Men movie, Superman 2 better than the first Superman movie, and Bad Boys II better than the first, but these were not as good as my top three listed above. Khan and Spidey sequels were also better than the original. Seems like a lot of second movies were really good, notice you dont see comedies here, i think its much harder to come up with a better comedy as you use up all your funny ideas in the first movie, in fact, most comedies are losing it towards the end of the first movie.

For adult drama, complexity of scrip with fantastic direction and acting GF2 got my finale vote. For popcorn munching wide eyed fantasy it was toss up between Empire and T2 for shear got ya by the throat Aliens hands down.

Spider-Man 2, Godfather 2, Aliens, and Empire Strikes Back are in a league above all the others. It's absolutely impossible for me to choose among them. Every time I think I have one of them chosen, I realize the attributes of another and change my mind. I cannot decide/vote in this poll.

T2 is a great flick, but the Terminator franchise for me just isn't in the same league as the other 4 above.

Yes, but a lot of that appreciation came after the fact. When it was first released, the movie was considered a disappointment (and is still the lowest grossing of all the Star Wars films), largely because people didn't like its open ending. They expected closure. It was only years later that it became generally accepted as the best of the series.

Josh, you're obviously correct about the delay in appreciation for "TESB," but that has been true of many great films. "Citizen Kane" and "Vertigo" come to mind.

The point about the ending is very true. I remember thinking "that was a great movie, too bad it just stopped in the middle of the story".

Lord of the Rings - Return of the King Part Three - First Two put me to sleep in the Theater in parts. Too damn long and preachy. I bet someday they'll edit the unnecessary preaching and speeches and wandering and merge all three into one magnificent action movie. There is alot of waste in all three movies that don't need to be there - I don't believe I was the only one I saw fall asleep during each 3 hour marathon movie.
