Should they be PC to tell the story or should they just keep the original name? That appears to be the question at hand.

LOL! Like it says, deal with it. Just call him Blackie and let's see the damn movie. Although the suggested replacement name is kinda cute.

It was 1943 and the lab was black with a white owner that called him nigger. No question in my mind there will be repercussions if they keep the name.

Nigger was dearly loved by Gibson and his men, who adopted him as their mascot. When he was killed by a car shortly before the raid they named a target after him in tribute.

Anyone care to take a guess at what they said when they were shooting at the target? No way that name stays.

Not clasically a "war" movie, but one about "war", Wargames is one of those that IMO is still one of the most underrated movies in the last 30yrs. It's on HDNet Movies this month, and hopefully will be getting a blu-ray treatment soon.

DaveFI,

Curious which "Wargames" you're referring to. Seems like there might be a few you could mean.

Thanks,
Mike

Ah... yes. Excellent. We have it on Laser Disk (!) ... Never replaced it with the DVD, and still watch it occasionally. I also saw this in the Los Angeles Westwood Cinemas when it was first released. Those cinemas were quite state-of-the-art at that time and it was a real experience. I remember it well even though it's been 25 years ago.

Thanks,
Mike

+1 Talvisota(aka The Winter War). View it on youtube, if you are not seen it yet. It's great.

Battle of the Bulge- Henry Fonda

For some comedy relief
Pineapple Express - Though I think this is rated R.

Pineapple Express is not a war movie. You may be thinking of Tropic Thunder.

I don't believe anyone mentioned Casualties of War, which is pretty good.

Also, the best war movies ever made....Missing in Action and Rambo: First Blood, Part II. Ok, those aren't that good, but First Blood (the original Rambo) is actually a really good movie.

Other enjoyable war movies that I don't think have been mentioned:
The Patriot (Revolutionary)
The Longest Day (WWII)
M*A*S*H* (Korean....much more cynical than the series)
Tigerland (Vietnam)
No Man's Land (Bosnia)
Hotel Rwanda

Band of Brothers is great for war movie. Everyone was telling me about the movie and I really want to watch this movie again. I feel how they fought for victory and salvation.

I want to add Taking Chance with Kevin Bacon. Based on a true story I caught late at night. I found it to be very moving and never heard of it till it was on HBO.

This is the weekend for war movies! TCM channel has a great line up from what I've looked at so far. Just got done watching "In Harm's Way".

I thought Stalingrad was a great war movie, told from the perspective of ordinary Germans who have no control over their governments actions.

It's been a while since I read the whole thread, so I don't recall if anyone has mentioned Command Decision:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040242/

It is a companion piece to 12 O'Clock High, about the stresses of command having to send American boys to their deaths over Germany. The slight twist in this one is that they are trying to wipe out the factories producing jet aircraft. It's from a play and shows it, but it's very smart and quite fascinating.

And with a great cast: Clark Gable, Walter Pidgeon, Van Johnson, Brian Donlevy, Charles Bickford, John Hodiak, Edward Arnold, Cameron Mitchell, Ray Collins to name but a few. This showed up recently on TCM and it's worth looking for.
