I got the following response from KGNS:

"Our DTV transmitter is having problems since last week and as a result the
NBC programing is standard and not High definition. Also lost are the CW
and Telemundo networks. Parts have been ordered and should be installed by
early next week.
If you can't pick up channel 8.1 you might need to do a re-scan on your
DTV or converter box.
"

My signal went out about 3 weeks ago and not "last week", but hopefully it'll come back when they fix their transmitter.

Sounds less like a transmitter problem and more like an encoder problem. I've seen other stations have their encoder fail and then they have to fall back on a single SD subchannel rather than their existing HD+SD multicast.

Hi everybody:

I live in Nuevo Laredo and just bought a new TV (HDTV built in) and an indoor HDTV antenna but even when the pictures on the following channels are crystal clear, these are the only ones that I'm able to watch.

I tried to rescanned several times but this is as good as it gets:

25.3 XHBR XEW HD
13.1 KVTV CBS DT
21.1 XHLNA TV Azteca 13
33.1 XHLAT TV Azteca 7

What do I need to do in order to get KGNS, Telemundo, Univision, etc. free signals in HD?

Thanks for your help!

KGNS's and KLDO's current digital signals are a bit weak and transmitted from the northwest, about halfway between Laredo and the Colombia Bridge. You may need a directional antenna to get a signal from both. The only indoor antennas I've found that consistently receive KGNS-DT are the Silver Sensor models: Zenith PHDTV1/3 and Terk's HDTVi/HDTVa.

But after June 12, when the U.S. channels move to their final locations, KLDO should be much easier to receive in Nuevo Laredo, as the tower is in downtown Laredo. KGNS may be trickier, since it is going to be on VHF, but if you can get KGNS analog with your current antenna KGNS-DT should also be easier to receive. KVTV 13 is also moving back to VHF any day now.

BTW, KGNS-DT 8-2 and 8-3 are now back.

I'm kind of new regarding HDTV technology so I started to look for information about it on the web.

This I found in a website called hdtvantennalabs.com:

"There is no such thing as an HDTV antenna!

The first thing to know is that there is no such thing as an HDTV antenna. Your antenna has no idea whether your signal is high definition or not, pretty much as it doesn't care whether you are watching Fox News or NBC chanel. Antenna is just a piece of metal resonating at some particular frequency and having desirable electrical properties and radiation pattern. You may have Ultra High Frequency (UHF) antenna or Very High Frequency (VHF) antenna, but Fox News antenna or HDTV antenna is pretty much nonsense. To be fair, there are some antenna properties that are important for HD signal reception. Without going into a technical discussion, the bottom line is that the only reason you see HDTV antennas in the market is 'cause it sells better. HDTV is a fancy buzzword. As a rule of thumb, HDTV optimization is the less important feature to look at when buying an antenna for HDTV. "

It is the above statment true?

I mean, can I get most of HDTV signals in Laredo or Nuevo Laredo with just a properly aimed outdoor conventional antenna?

Thanks!

Yes, any properly-aimed "conventional" outdoor antenna that tunes both VHF and UHF signals should also work for digital television; you might need to adjust the aim somewhat for optimal digital television reception, though. But I wouldn't adjust the aim much until after June 12, when the U.S. stations should be on their final channels.

By the way, don't expect "HDTV" quality on any U.S. channels except KGNS (8-1, NBC). Telemundo (8-3), CBS (13-1), and Fox (27-3) are all currently being broadcast in SD locally, even though all of these networks have national HD feeds. The picture quality will probably be better than analog, though.

I've just installed an outdoor antennna And then finally picked up the following channels:

8.1 KGNS
8.2 CW
8.3 Telemundo

27.1 KLDO Univision
27.2 Telefutura
27.3 Fox
27.4 LATV

With this new antenna I've got all of the above plus the 4 That I've used to picked with the indoor antenna.

The problem is that today at noon I wasn't able to get the channel KGNS 8 HD and all of its subchannels.

Are they gone or still on?

I've read that in the past they were off the air for quite some time and was wondering if that problem is back again.

The channel 8's went out for me today, as well. They usually go out anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. It's frustrating that it keeps happening even after they fix the issue over at the station. I hope they resolve the problem permanently in time for the June 12 deadline...

KGNS is just flaky. I have learned to bear with it, alas.

They are transmitting (the signal strength is decent), there's just no picture today.

KGNS 8-1, 8-2, 8-3 signals came back from late last night and lasted to somewhere this morning.

Now are gone back again.

15-3 is on now broadcasting something in 480i 4:3

Today I have no picture on any of the following channels:

8-1,8-2,8-3,27-1,27-2,27-3,27-4

I figure that due to the storm last night my outdoor antenna got move but it also could be that this problem it's not only mine but everybody's.

Anybody knows why?

I'm really new to all the issues regarding HDTV so I appreciated your advice because I'm not familiar with this system yet, just got it last week.

Thanks!

I live pretty darn close to the tower (NW Laredo), and I still can't get as good a picture on KGNS-HD as I do the Mexican HD (Azteca 7 and 13). Furthermore, KGNS assures me that they are now broadcasting at "full strength." Why are the Mexican signals so much stronger and clearer? No matter how I aim my aerials (I'm using the indoor Radio Shack "UFO" type), I can't get a perfect KGNS-HD signal. It's decent, but I still get blips and faint horizontal ghost lines that creep up vertically. Azteca is perfect. What gives?
As long as KGNS OTA HD signal is so crappy, I can't imagine DirecTV would have any interest in carrying it.

KGNS is now on VHF 8, which is a rather long wavelength and harder to capture with an indoor antenna. You may want to try a simple VHF dipole ("rabbit ears") - the ideal length for channel 8 is 31 inches (15 1/2 on each "stick"). See here for details.

I lost the signal (again) yesterday for channels 8.1 - 8.3 even with my outdoor antenna. I can't even get the signal on my Digital TV while connected to the outdoor antenna, anymore. I just figured it was because I live in Village Creek, which is 18.8 miles (according to antenna web) from the signal and my outdoor antenna's range is 20 miles. But I guess people close to the signal are also having trouble with it, so I'm stumped as to what the problem could be. I honestly can't understand why we can see the channels clearly for several days, even weeks at a time and then, other times, the signal is completely gone for a couple of days in a row.

I'm glad I'm not the only one having that problem. I was getting really frustrated. One second I was watching it fine then the next there was no signal. I really hope they fix the problem, I'm beginning to hate these interruptions. Yeah, I know it's free, but still!

News of sorts:

KLDO 27-1 (RF 19) is now broadcasting in 1080i OTA, although I haven't seen any 16:9 programming on it yet when flipping by. Then again I don't think I've tuned in during primetime. Presumably this is in preparation for the World Cup to try to leach viewers from Nuevo Laredo affiliates.

The signal on other subchannels has suffered a bit; KXOF (.3) is notably blockier. I keep hoping they'll flash-cut KXOF-CA to digital and go 720p there.

Time-Warner finally got off their duff and added some more HD channels, all in the 1000s:

1105 ABC Family Hd
1126 Disney Channel HD
1208 HGTV HD
1209 Food Channel HD
1251 TLC HD
1252 Discovery Channel HD
1253 Animal Planet HD
1255 History HD
1272 Science Channel HD
1303 ESPNews HD
1354 CNBC HD
1400 USA HD
1402 TBS HD
1450 Syfy HD
1452 Comedy Channel HD
1455 Bravo HD
1502 BET HD
1511 Palladia HD
1701 HBO 2 HD
1716 CineMAX HD

No local HD yet though.

I noted since friday that analog channel 39 LP is now KLDO Univision 27.

Some know what happen with KNEX-LP analog channel 55? I only see it like one time each year and only see a blue screen with letters KNEX- LP 55 LAREDO, TEXAS and hear KNEX-FM 106.1 or the other BMP AM Radio station and not Azteca America Network.

Putting KLDO's signal on KXOF isn't all that surprising; you have to figure the audience w/o digital televisions or converters for Univision in Laredo & Nuevo Laredo is much bigger than the potential Fox audience.

No idea what's up with KNEX.

Its been out for a couple of years. Ever since BMP Radio bought the station there has not been any programming on it except radio station music with a black or blue screen on it.

Hey Quango!

Excuse me, as you know I live across. My outdoor roof antenna works almost perfect, it can perfectly get all HD and SD channels except the 8's, the picture here is on and off most of the time and in the best case scenario with pixelation on it.

Do you think if I hook it up to a digital converter box like the ones you guys used in Laredo the picture on the 8's will definittely be fixed or at least get better? ....or Probably it won't do any good, right? it's all about the area.

Thanks Quango!

Sorry, it's been a long time since I dropped in AVS. I really doubt a converter box would help much... you might be able to reorient your antenna to better get the 8-* signal - on the Mexican side, if you can point your antenna towards KGNS (basically the same direction as the World Trade Bridge, north-northwest) you'll probably not lose much signal from the other stations.

But KGNS is the worst local signal by far to try to get anywhere in town - lowest frequency and furthest away.
