Before the transition to digital I was receiving channel 6.1 ABC Philadelphia OTA on a UHF antenna without problems. Since the switchover I no longer receive it. Why is this?

With the end of analog they moved their digital signal from UHF 64 back to VHF 6, You will need a Lowband VHF antenna to receive them now.

I can attach one right to my existing UHF antenna right? Would I get a lot more channels when I scan?

Is your antenna on the roof or in the attic? You could add a VHF antenna with a "UVSJ" that is a UHF VHF antenna joiner, it allows you to connect a UHF and VHF antenna to the same coax and allow one cable run from your antenna to your TV. How far are you from Roxborough antenna farm?

WHYY PBS 12 also moved back to VHF 12. Check the Philadelphia thread or antenna threads for more info.

My antenna was in the attic. I actually moved it out to the roof this morning and then rescanned. Channel 6.1 and 12.1 both were coming in clear. This evening I went to watch Jeopardy! (6.1), no go, it was not receiving. Even 29.1 Fox was coming in badly tonight and I never have problems with blocking and bad reception on that channel. My son told me the FCC was involved with Abc because they are having broadcast problems. It's funny, I finally move the antenna to the roof, and my reception actually got worse! As to the question regarding my distance from Roxbourgh, I guess around 30 miles.

29 is supposed to be doing antenna work and thus increasing coverage in the near future.
