HDTV??

There's no HDTV in Europe. He was protesting the quality of widescreen programming (equivalent to 480i widescreen here in US) apparently. God knows what he would have done if he had been protesting 1080i...

It sounds to me he was protesting the low quality of European PAL widescreen TV. If there was 1080i (or equivalent HDTV) in Europe, this person wouold have had no reason to do what he did.

If you worked at a TV station and had to deal with these wackos, you wouldn't say that. I've spent more time standing in the parking lot because of bomb scares than you'd care to know about.

There are wackos everywhere in the world, including in his country. Maybe Jack Valenti should take note if he successfully downrezzes our expensive TVs and renders them obsolete. You just never know!

You know it's not hard to see the joke material available with this story and yes, people need to relax a little.

However, just keep in mind what happened the first time a predator lured somebody from an on-line chat room to a meeting place. Or when the first on-line trader went ballistic and started shooting up the place. Or the first on-line scammer, etc...

Does anybody remember what happened? I sure do. The media took these stories and ran with them. And who or what did they blame? That's right, the internet. Suddenly negative stories about anything remotely linked to the internet began popping up everywhere. The agenda was horrible. Instead of castigating the individuals responsible for these acts, the media and the like chose to attack the forum on which these acts were perpetrated.

I can see it now. Wide-screen Rage! HDTV Psychosis! 1080i Nut Guns Down (choose your network here) Exec! Just wait. If somebody else goes into an office and does something like the moron did today, the backlash will happen. Course then maybe the execs will push to get true HD everywhere and forget all this DVI/HDCP garbage too...Hmmm...;)

I can generally lighten up with the best of em, but let's keep in mind that this guy lost his life (eg, he ain't on earth anymore) and that numerous of the people he held hostage will have some emotional scars for years to come. He certainly had relatives and possibly a wife and kids who have been pretty impacted by the thing.

And a final thought - There's a fair chance that he was a poster on AVS, Spot, or elsewhere that us folks frequent and..., we probably knew him.

Sorry if I've offended anyone, but twice in the past 2 weeks people I've known fairly well on boards have died, one of cancer and another in a flash flood accident in Hawaii.

RIP,

Aslan...

My view entirely, I don't consider that this was in any way a funny event.

My view entirely. Come on folks, you can either try to enjoy life and make the best of it or you can cry all the time. I choose to enjoy it. FWIW, I don't think any of us were making fun of the guy specifically, but rather making light of the irony of the situation itself. People are too serious.

I joke about these kind of things all the time in private among people I know, but this is a public forum and we don't really know each other.

I don't know enough about the people who suggested this guy was doing the right thing to know if they're joking are not.

I understand what you mean and you are right, it often times is hard to discern the true intent of posts on a internet forum like this. That's why I try to use the icons as much as possible. The winking ones are a dead giveaway :).
