It seems the previous thread for this market was deleted. I thought I'd re-start it and see what's going on.

I know that KTEN recently added ABC to 10.3. I'm curious how it looks.

I was up there over the 4th of July, and it has some pixelation - when you cram a 1080i, 720p and a 480i all on the same channel, quality can leave a bit to be desired. Granted I was there during daytime, when there isn't a lot of HD programming - not sure how it looks at night when there are 2 streams...

I hope that the cable companies and satellite get an "uncompressed" feed (i.e., straight from MC, before it gets multiplexed onto the OTA signal...).

I did enjoy seeing KXII running local news in HD - looked good (except for the shots they had at an overnight accident. Note to photographer: don't point the camera at the police car strobes, especially when interviewing the officer or a witness!)

I figured that was the case. Both stationd do that, don't they?
I've wondered if it would be better if they did 720p on 2 and 480i on one?

I'm fairly certain they send a signal separate from their broadcast to the cable and satellite companies. For one thing, it allows them to stay on with most of their customers even if the transmitter dies. Some stations did this early on when they didn't have a digital transmitter fired up so they could still provide HD programming.

A few years ago, a number of local topics that had not been used for quite some time were put in the Archive. The topic for Sherman must have been one of them.

It's fine to start a new topic in this forum (only for a TV market), if one does not exist. Otherwise, existing topics should be used.

That's pretty much what happened.. so I started this one. :-)

The market itself has changed a lot from what it used to be.
It's really Sherman-Denison-Ada-Ardmore-Durant. It encompasses a large part of southern Oklahoma and the Texas counties along the border.

The Sherman-Denison area was kind of a run-down area until a few years ago. It has grown up quite a bit and I suspect there are a number of people with something to say about the TV stations in the market.

This topic has now been added to the US Thread Index. Hopefully it will be easier for others in this area to find it.

Also, the title has been edited to the Nielsen Designated Market Area name.

I finally got a chance to see how some of these multiplexed HD signals look. It's not that bad actually. A little pixilization on some shows. I wouldn't call the secondary channels true HD though. I think the main signal on Channels 10 and 12 look fine, but the secondary HD channels seem just a little "out of focus" to me.

Most always the 'dot one' channels (2.1, 4.1, 7.1, etc.) are HD. The 'dot two, dot three' channels (2.2, 2.3, 4.2, 4.3, 7.2, 7.3, etc.) are only SD.

Not in the Sherman market though, Ken. KXII has My-SD on 12-2 and Fox-HD on 12-3 and KTEN has CW+ on 10-2 and ABC-HD on 10-3.

EDIT: Upon rereading your message, I can't tell whether you're saying Sherman is not typical, or if you didn't know the information I stated above. Apologies if you already knew.

Hey Trip.

Are the .2 or .3 channels broadcast in HD or are they just the HD feed downconverted?

KXII caries CBS in 1080i, MNTV in 480i, and Fox in 720p. KTEN has NBC in 1080i, CW in 480i, and ABC in 720p.

What I saw was clearly HD on both the .1 and .2 (or .3 in KTEN's case) There was a little more... pixilization on there than I'm accustomed to. It may have also been the programming.

I know dual HD has been done in several markets. I had just not seen it until we had the atmospherics for it to hit my house here in Plano.

Seems to me that it would be better for a dual-HD station to be in 720 on both HD streams instead of 1080 on one and 720 on another.

I heard KTEN had another lightning strike. Any reception issues?

Yeah, haven't gotten a peep out of them since the 23rd. frown.gif
Called in yesterday and she said they would be down most of yesterday. Haven't followed up since.
