Under the beta-test they have disabled several functions of the box. The live button does not work also the settings for audio output have been turned off and the favorites menu has been disabled. Also there are no settings for fast-forward compensation or 10 second fast rewind. The people at the beta hotline tell me these features will only be turned back on when the test is complete.

This is the Arris 6 tuner. Probably set up differently by TWC.

Realized that after I posted. Tried to delete but the right side active topics overlays the final delete button when on an Ipad

This might be of some interest here. Certainly a game changer if it happens.

Until/unless I see otherwise, I am assuming that GF will be cherry-picking the areas that they'll serve. Being in a small underground subdivision in Matthews, I won't be holding my breath. Best I can hope for at the moment is some pricing and/or speed pressure on TWC.

In the other places where GF has moved in, it generally sets the indigenous cable & wired phone provider into a panic. All of a sudden all kinds of great deals are to be had with faster service.

I'm holding off on getting excited at all about the GF announcement until I hear a clarification on exactly where they're going to be servicing. I seem to recall when I read the initial announcement that suburbs (Huntersville, Matthews, etc.) would not be included. Still, unless TWC/AT&T somehow split the region up into City/Suburbs, the promotions should be available to us all. I'd still much rather Google actually ran out to the suburbs as well.

Sounds like it's pretty much a done deal. GF is coming to Charlotte and RDU. That's certainly going to shake up the status quo TWC/AT&T oligopoly.

Looks like it has been officially announced in Raleigh with Pat in attendance.

Interesting. My area in Huntersville is not included in the map (guess we're too far off the main corridor), but the site says they're just using predictive modeling and it's not official, so likely the borders aren't anywhere near exact.

Even if it was provided here, I'm not sure what I'd do. My bill right now is $35 for 15 Mbps and it's working mostly well enough for everything we do. If the pricing is consistent with other markets, that'd be double the cost for a huge jump in speed. Too bad there's no 500 Mbps option for $35.

Hmm my area of Gastonia is in there but I doubt anytime soon if any it would come here. At least it will drive U-verse and TWC to offer free speed bumps and other intensives so it's good for the people around that have to stay put.

I think the map linked above is flat out wrong. The city of Charlotte posted a map of where the fiber huts would be placed in the link below.

http://charmeck.org/city/charlotte/Newsroom/Documents/GoogleFiber/Google%20Fiber%20Hut%20Locations.pdf

Furthermore, Google also said that ALL the city of Charlotte and ONLY the city of Charlotte would be included. Suburbs are not included.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2015/01/28/5477406/google-fiber-plans-frustrate-residents.html

The only question is which will be available first: Google fiber or Comcast X1?

^Apparently Huntersville and Mint Hill have contacted Charlotte to be a part of this plan and most likely have reached out as well. Google for its part says that it will provide access based on neighborhood "interest".

Huntersville runs a city owned power company (residential and business) so I'd imagine that ROW access would be a non-issue there.

Digital Conversion

I received this information in an email today from TWC:

Wanted to reach out and make sure you were aware of the dates for the Digital conversion for the Carolinas. All televisions without digital set tops will require a DTA.

Channel cut overs begin in May for Raleigh/Fayetteville and June for Charlotte.

I have several of the DTA's..Slick little box. Holding the INFO button down on the remote for 7 seconds provides a wealth of information.

TW has been trapping most of the channels out for those folks for some time now.

From Eagle/Comtronics:

"In today's fast growing internet market, tier traps are now being utilized by cable operators to offer "Data / Modem only" services. These filters are designed to remove the entire band of cable video channels and allow only the data carriers to pass. "

The real question is:
With the lower channels being freed up, will they use these to give us faster internet speeds and less compression on the HD channels ?
Already have more to watch than I have time for but a better picture would be nice !

^TWC just announced their 4Q video subscriber losses (215,000) and for the year it was 825,000. It's clear that a lot of people have started to cut the cord and will never be coming back. Where they are gaining is in Internet only subscriptions.

So, if they are doing some thinking over here, it would seem they would want to use that bandwidth to where they are gaining customers, i.e. use it to beef up the Internet offerings. Locally this is going to be pretty important now that Google has announced it's moving in.
