Fellow PDX'ers:

The past couple of nights on KION-DT Ch. 40, I've seen occasional funny white "sparkles" on local content, such as during the 11 p.m. news. I don't see this on the CBS HDTV shows. They seem to happen most often during commercials.

The sparkles seems to occur along object boundaries.

Anyone else see this? 'thought I'd find out before bugging Lee about it.

Are these like those star sparkles that come off peoples teeth when they smile? :D Sorry, only KOIN viewing I've done the past couple days was very briefly this morning to see the long range weather forecast. Didn't notice anything for the minute or so that I was there.

'still see it tonight. "The Agency" looked fine, but once they switched to the local news feed and commercials, I see them every once and a while.

Barry,

I watched Entertainment Tonight after the news last night and there definitely are some strange little white specks alright. And you're right, they don't seem to be evenly distributed about the screen. What about KGW? Am I the only one who continues to get the snap, crackle, pops? I've complained to the station but they don't seem to care too much about it. Oh, the woes. Us poor HDTVers out here. We're all alone out here on an island and nobody cares ;). It will be nice one day when there's enough of us to matter won't it?

Ron,

I have a Dish 6000; what type of receiver do you have?

Any other Portlanders care to confirm or refute?

I'm a few miles NW of Banks, behind that big hill that HWY 26 cuts through by Sellers Rd. See the link in my signature for all the gory details.

I have seen the 'sparkless!:)
They are NOT a DTV channel problem!

They originate someplace in the digital standard definition part of the plant and are not apparent in the analog signal because it lacks the resolution to show them. Only you lucky viewers with high resolution monitors can see them. 'The Maury Show' today was particularly bad as it left the digital Master Control switcher. The sparkles did not appear on the output of the video server playing back the program though. This is going to be a fun one to nail down!

Glad to hear you've seen the problem. I've been keeping a mental "viewing log" to see where it show up. Never during CBS HDTV, or national commercials. As soon as you shift to local commercials they show up: Emporium ad is pretty repeatable; the end of a BedMart ad was the worst I've seen. Seen during other local content as well.

This is a new phenomenon; I didn't see these until very recently.

'never watch the analog signal anymore; 'don't even have a VHF antenna installed anymore.

We found the problem. Nothing that a $7,000 circuit board won't fix (and that is the 'board exchange' price - not the cost of a new one!). The new one should be here Wednesday.

While talking with the engineer at KGW a couple days ago he told me that the source of their snap, crackle and popping was due to a bad piece of equipment that's dropping audio packets. He figured about 20k for replacement which he says they will to do... when they can find some money for it.

Good news Lee. Thanks.

Quick update on the sound prob I mentioned at KGW. Walcott just called me from the station and he says they found another problem which they have fixed which should take care of some of the popping. He says they still need the new equipment but that all the local programming and anything on the SD (8-2) channel should be ok now. Says the network feeds will still have the snapping until they get the new stuff though. I sent him a link to the forum. Hopefully he'll stop by to see what's going on here.
