Anyone who lives in Louisville see the commercial about the telecast of Thunder over Louisville being broadcast in HD(I guess it will be local only)? I wonder if this is WHAS's coming out party for HDTV? For those of you who don't live in this area, it is one the largest fireworks display in the world. They literally light up over $1,000,000 bucks in fireworks. It is syncronized with music from hundreds of speakers using something like a couple hundred thousand watts of power plus it includes an airshow. One of the highlights is lighting one of the bridges that crosses the river (which is a whole mile long) with a waterfall-looking firework display - it is freaking awesome show. It usually draws over 1/2 million people and is part of the festivities that kick-off Derby week here!

I will definitely skip going downtown (my office view is blocked by the Brown Hotel :( ) and watch it at home!

Oh this would be incredible!

But, ABC doesn't cover the Derby, do they?

EDIT:

I just saw the commercial. Showed WHAS-TV DT and presented in HDTV!

All I can say is they better start showing some programming more often if they want to test the equipment out more and be sure things go well. Flipping the switch at once for one program is not a wise way to do things.

Thanks woowoo, any and all info appreciated. Just when Gil starts to post and we was getting some info on whas's plans then he abruptly leaves and we are back to square one in regards to hdtv in Louisville (outside of wkpc). I noted last year at this time that I would be shocked to see hdtv on any commercial stations in Louisville by the May 1st deadline and I hope whas proves me somewhat wrong but it looks like I am more right than wrong with wave, wlky and wdrb saying late summer and/or the end of the year. Thank God for Canadian satellite:)

Most commercial engineers that I know would be reluctant to post in a forum like this.
Big brother might be watching.............

Here's Da Scoop.......(From an inside source in engineering)

They are renting an HD Truck (WRAL Was mentioned)
It will have 5 or 6 HD Hard cameras
The RF cameras (Bridge cam etc.) will be Up-converted
Preproduced packages will also be up-converted

The NTSC feed will come from the Downconvert of the HD Feed
I think that the NTSC feed will be 16 x 9
(My source was not sure)

It will be a good day for Louisville
I for one Applaud their efforts

So folks....
It is true

That's great news Woowoo!

Saw the commercial last night while dx'ing WHAS 11, advertising it as HD in nice, fairly large letters in the lower left of screen!

Wish I didn't have a local LP shopping channel on 55, otherwise I might have a shot at it given good DX condtions, or a tethered balloon up a few hundred+ feet!

While my heart is with the Rozzi's and the Cincy Riverfest/WEBN fireworks I checked out the "thunder" website ... 53,000+ shells! Wow ... that will get the ground a' shakin'+ should be excellent in HD!

woowoo, thanks for the info! I guess my HiPix card will get a real workout:)
Hopefully they will do the derby in HDTV - I saw whas's test feeds (I have them HiPix'd) and they have shots of what looks like last years derby infield. It is a long distant shot but looks good just the same. It might add something to the ol' derby party to have it in HD!

If memory serve's me right.....
NBC has the derby this year(:-(

On another note...
We will be making a one hour collapsed version of Thunder for air on KET
Although it will be NTSC it allows folks in the far corners of the state to see the show.
It will air a couple of weeks after the event.

VERY COOL.

Has anyone caught anything on WHAS-DT since Gil left? I agree that it would seem to be fool-hardy for them to expect to just show up and flip the HD switch without any warm up broadcasts. Then again what do I know about TV engineering. Amazing how a few posts on AVS forum can make one feel like a frikin' electronics guru.

Even though NBC has the actual Derby race, WHAS always does race day coverage. HD coverage would be awesome!!!

After seeing a report on the production on Discovery channel, we went down to catch it in person about 3 years ago and then again last year. Quite the event! With the air show and then the fireworks all sync'd to a nicely edited track. Kudos to Louisville for this.

HDNet should think about picking it up if the feed is available.

dgreen,

Exactly what my HDTV TV sales guy has been in email conversations with Mark Cuban about since Feb. I'm hoping this can be worked out and HDNET can simulcast this event which is one of the HUGEST displays in the world. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed because Mark has been informed and seems to have an interest in the broadcast according to the sales manager I mentioned.

Wow! That would be great if HDnet would carry Thunder! Everyone could then see how awesome this event is and it probably could go down as defacto demo material for hd. I hope whas and Mark C. can work a deal out:)

be prepared for updated security:

What? No weapons allowed?

Dang!

;)

Sounds as bad as the Derby infield (pretty much can bring in your body and the clothes on your back).

Has anyone seen any further testing from WHAS-DT 55??

WHAS-DT has begun running some test transmissions in high definition. On April 20th, 2002 WHAS-DT will make history with the first commercial HDTV broadcast in the state of Kentucky. For the first time ever the opening ceremonies of the Kentucky Derby Festival, "Thunder Over Louisville" will be broadcast in HDTV. After April 20th we plan to broadcast the majority of WHAS prime-time programming in Digital including ABC HDTV network programming.

This is actually true. WTVQ-DT 40 (ABC) in Lexington doesn't have the equipment, yet, to pass HD programming. WXIX-DT 29 (FOX) at best only shows FOX Widescreen (480p), but, they've not been able to do a good job of that from I understand (and from what I've seen the few times I've gotten a lock on them).

We all know WKPC-DT 17 (PBS) has been up for quite some time and has done some HD programming but that's not a commercial station. So, WHAS gets to claim some sort of first. I'll take it! :)

The word "Commercial" sort of seems like a disclaimer.
We lit off our First transmitter during the state fair
in "99".

Oh well....You guys know who was first.

Max HD:
I talked with one of their transmitter engineers yesterday,
They are on the 1kw box.
No remote for the Big One yet.
They will run it for thunder.

Woot,

Thanks for the info. They're getting out pretty well for 1Kw. Watching them on the DTC-100 right now, with SS of 40-50 w/no drops. Not bad for the middle of the day 70mi away.

Looks like that pesky LP is still on the air.Was very strong here last night at times(snow free) during an elevated ground scatter event.Hope it's not QRM'ing DT-17 viewers in and around Louisville.Any developments with that situation?

Thanks again,
GB

I've not had any issues with WKPC-DT 17, myself.

But, the DXing last night and this morning was great! I locked on all Cincy digital stations and 3 of the digitals in Indy as well as WTVQ in Lexington. Even got a blip once on WTVF-DT 56 in Nashville.

Plus, I was pulling in analogs from Dayton, Terre Haute, Nashville, Evansville and got audio from WGN-19 in Chicago and WHOI-19 in Peoria

No HD shots yet and not one mention of HDTV by any of the newscasters.

oh...oops...they just went to colors bars...no...back now. thought maybe a switch was about to occur.

But, I am getting 92-95% signal strength (according to the DISH 6000) from 20 miles out.

Finally.

Not all of the shots are in HD and they're stretching the SD shots to 16:9 and it looks like similar quality as what I see on regular DISH.

But, the HD shots look pretty good!

UPDATE:

Now that I've had a chance to look at the broadcast in detail, there's a bit of edge enhancement going on. It's almost on par  with what I saw on the DISH CBS-HD broadcast of The Masters.

If they toned it down a bit, the PQ would be just awesome!

No...it's on...they just showed the F-15. Looked pretty good (other than the glow from the edge enhancement).

What receiver do you have and is it mapping to 11-01 or does it show as 55-01? I'm only getting the one digital subchannel so there's no multicasting going on.

Maybe delete the channel and rescan?
