Thanks for the new forum.

I'll just log in here to keep things up to date in the Phoenix area.

Question: HDTV in Phoenix?

Answer: NBC, ABC, PBS, HBO satellite, HDNET satellite, Showtime satellite (not yet via DirecTV), but KPHO, the local CBS affiliate is only transmitting a DTV upconvert of standard definition material and NOT passing through the CBS HDTV feed.

Why?: Meredith, KPHO's owner, refuses to invest in the equipment.

When?: Probably never, if it's up to Meredith.

Any word on Cox providing STB's for HD content ?
I was hoping they would follow Time Warners lead

Not that its of much consolation now, but someday viewer pressure will probably force KPHO into passing the CBS HD feed. However, at the slow rate that the transition is occurring, I don't think the ground is in any danger of swelling in the near future.

There is no need for STBs. AT&T Cable (soon to be ComCast) in Chicago metro is feeding full HD local channels on standard cable channels.

NO cable box at all, NO special STB (just your digital tuner), No additional charge. Just connect it directly to your tuner antenna input and search for the channels.

But more seriously, I think you need to get CBS New York and the FCC on your local CBS station. I would not hurt to bring it to the attention of your local political figures as well. The politicians can get much more done than CBS or the FCC.

Actually, I collected a pretty good sized group of signers for a petition to Meredith last year. We got an answer from them saying we weren't a significant portion of their viewer base, so they could not justify HDTV. They are transmitting DTV, which is going with the letter of the FCC, but not the spirit.

I was getting ready to contact Senator John McCain who was on the senate committee looking into this transition to DTV, but two things happened:
1. Senator McCain (our local AZ senator) is no longer on that committee, thanks to the re-alignment of powers in the senate.
2. Sept 11th.

There are other disparate efforts in the area trying to get things happening with CBS and KPHO, and frankly, it doesn't look good, and, due to the reasons listed above, I've kinda gotten disheartened by the whole effort. Some local dealers seem slightly interested, but it must not be affecting their sales...

I posted the original notice as information, not as a rallying call. :(

Apparently, Phoenix is the only station in the nation broadcasting an SD from the CBS national feed.

The only real interest I was able to get was from :

Someone there should be red faced at this astounding turn of events?
Good Luck

Wow there seems to be so much interest in HDTV on this forum in Phoenix. No wonder KPHO doesn't care either!

"the local CBS affiliate is only transmitting a DTV upconvert of standard definition material"

NOT TRUE!! It's only 480I, it's NOT upconverted. That's why some of us that have a Unity Motion STB see it as jerky... because the STB assumes it's getting a progressive signal.

That's why KPHO looks like that! I thought it was just where I lived or something, but that is good to know that other Unity Motion owners have the same pain.

Now that Ch. 3 and 61 are digital as well, KPHO is the only channel I have to view through my regular TV tuner and not my HDTV tuner.

Great job KPHO! You have been beat out by 3 independant stations and even the Spanish language station for picture quality. And that doesn't even include PBS which beats the snot out of everybody in the Phoenix area.

What a bunch of cheap morons they have at KPHO.
