What I don't understand is why does WHNT leaves the air anywhere from 10:35 to 10:45 at night. Does it have something to do with HDTV signal allotments or what? Even the analog pass-throughs look better than direct analog signals. Dave is even funnier on 59.1 .

Anyone there?...Anyone?...Anyone?...Beuller?...Beuller?

Wolfie -- I think they had said before that they're still testing, and that the 10:35 or so turn-off was planned at the moment. Not sure why. I'm sure it's something local and not having to do with CBS in general. Maybe they're tweaking the transmitter and have to turn it off to do so.

Yo, Brian Covington mentioned to me in an E-mail last week that they would be shutting things down about 10:35 each night...he did not say why.

Man, I'm glad somebody is up on this stuff. Until things change I guess I'll just have to enjoy Dave's monologue. Can't wait till I can listen to his musical guests perform in DD 5.1 . :)

Actually Wolfie I don't think CBS is passing DD 5.1 as of yet (has to do with the encoder they originally chose for their HDTV stuff). Only ABC, PBS, HBO, and Showtime are passing 5.1 at the moment (on HBO they're passing 5.1 only on their most recent transfers)...

Hello everybody,
WHNT broadcasting in HDTV is an awesome achievement.I live in Madison, AL and have a HDTV monitor and have not made a decision on a tuner solution. I have not done the DirecTV thing because I am not looking to replace my cable and cable modem and telephone service through Knology. I know there are solutions out there from Scientific Atlanta (Explorer 3100HD) and am wondering if anyone else is in this same boat.
If they drag their feet for too long, I may have to buy the Samsung just OTA box. Anyone out there have this box and any experiences? I also found out that Hughes has a new HDTV box for $499 but once again I would have to have DirecTV.

Help!!!

Neal, you don't need to ditch Knology to get DirecTV. I use it to get locals, and still have DirecTV. Believe me, it is WAY worth the effort. I also have cable modem through Knology. Knology has a barebones "basic cable" package for $10 or so. The Sony HD100 tuner will let you tune DirecTV, standard cable or antenna, and digital OTA all through one menu. I believe the Zenith will do this as well. Works very well as an integrated system.

There's no comparison between DirecTV and Knology analog!

Like I said before, I'm glad somebody is up on this stuff. While viewing WHNT-HD, I was reading the display on my Sony STB and saw the DD mark and just assumed that it was 5.1. Sorry.

What a bummer. Was looking forward to CSI HD last night but got this analog cropped mess. WHASSUPP? And then turned to The Late Show and got more than the usual 5 minutes worth. Are these growing pains with the station, or are they playing mind games with us. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to see people in your area are interested in HDTV. Tried to start a thread for the Montgomery area. NO response. Maybe that's the reason that we in the Montgomery area will be the last to receive HDTV in Alabama. Apparently no one around here is really interested in HDTV.

somethin's going on here! Is 59.1 totally out? Tuned in today at 6:00 pm and all I get is the dreaded "bluescreen of death" (the little blue box at the bottom of the screen that says "searching for digital signal"). Any response from anyone tuned in would be greatly appreciated. :(

Disregard this post. I found out that it's my equipment. The STB got a little overheated and started freakin' out. These HD boxes, with their digital chips, are sensitive to heat. So keep them cool and you should have no trouble with them.

Wolfie -- have you had any heat problems with your HD100 before? Mine's been running almost constantly since January and I haven't had any problems like that....

Hey buddy!

It may be the room conditions. My HT is in a small bedroom upstairs and it stays warm, even in the wintertime. I think I might need a vent redirector for the cooling system or even a small room A/C.

Keep in touch. It's good to hear from ya.

Hey Wolfie -- I'm still planning on having you come over to check out my sat install -- I need my HDNet fix!!!!

Does anybody know the status of the other networks in the Huntsville area? Anyone else going to be ready by May 1 for real?

Hey Darin, I'm not holding my breath on the other four:

WAAY-has stated that they are holding toward 2003.

WAFF-seems to be pointing to this summer, since NBC has announced their fall lineup will be in HD.

WZDX-(Fox doesn't even do HD, just 480P analog).

WHDF-haven't heard anything from them (they are a small independent station without a lot of financial clout).

I have a feeling that WHNT was funded by their parent company-The New York Times-for this endeavor. The conversion costs anywhere from 1 to 2 million bucks. Not something to take lightly.

1 to 2 million bucks sounds like less than a minute of SuperBowl ad time. I think they can handle it at a corporate level.

What about the PBS station - WHIQ? - the one whose digital broadcast facility burned down last year. I thought they were close to coming back.

While it is true that fox doesn't do true HD, their 480p widescreen is a digital offering and is still much better than analog 480i. I have heard nothing about WZDX's plans for transmitting the digital signal.

The Huntsville PBS digital station is actually WBIQ-DT, channel 24.

TitanTV says September for WBIQ but TitanTV has been known to be wrong before...I'm not holding my breath on either WBIQ or WZDX.

According to Alabama's public TV website, WHIQ is Huntsville, WBIQ is Birmingham.

Correct you are sir and my apologies. I made the mistake of believing what TitanTV said was the correct call letters and of course they were wrong, just like they're wrong on the digital rollout dates they list 90% of the time! :)

Man, what's up with TitanTV. We've be up and running, I know, for a good 2-3 weeks. I even sent them an e-mail telling of WHNT-HD going live and they haven't even touched their database. And people think the slow rollout is blamed on the local affiliates. It's from misimformation from "reputable" sources like TitanTV.com. JMHO.

This is per 4/25 at 14:30 (that's 2:30 for you non-military) from the "reputable" TitanTV.com:
WHNT-DT (Ch 59.1) Up on May 1, 2002 :p
WAAY-DT (Ch 32) Up on Nov. 1, 2002
WZDX-DT (Ch 41) Up on May 1, 2002
WHDF-DT (Ch 14) Up on May 1, 2002
WAFF-DT (Ch 49) FCC Extension (This means "who knows when")

I sure hope the info on WZDX (Fox) is accurate because I would love to see shows like "24" in widescreen even if it's only 480p. I saw a few 480p FOX shows on the Canadian Bell ExpressVu DBS system when I was subscribing to that service about a year ago and the PQ was quite good.

On another note I saw in the HDTV newsletter today that the Huntsville TV market is ranked #83 in the country which is a lot higher than I would have previously suspected. Perhaps WHNT's early rollout will put additional competitive pressure on the other affils to get their act together as well.

Just Missed "The Empire Strikes Back" in widescreen 480P. Certainly would have been better than old crappy analog 480I.

http://www.hdpictures.com/stations.htm seems to have updated rather proactively. However, their status page is much more vague than TitanTV.
