Nothing from WPMI, but here's what I got from WKRG today:

Quote:
Hello Rick, we are waiting for a tower crew to install our antenna.
Hopefully this will before May 1, 2002. At first we will run low
power, 55KW ERP and standard def. I have requested the HDTV equipment
we need but don't have a date yet. We will go high power 2004, 1 megawatt.

Thank you,

Jim Richardson, CE
WKRG-TV
It appears that Ft. Walton may not get the WKRG signal until next year. That's 12.6 dB below WKRG's full power.

Oh no. Say it aint so.
I've been waiting for so long to see The Tonight Show in HD. Please tell me that WPMI is not teasing us.

If PMI does not get the digital channel up is anyone out there in P'cola getting the NBC HD feed from KU? If so please let me come over some night to get a look.

Whoa, Bob!

I only mean that I haven't had any response from WPMI personally. There is a post where the WPMI engineer is quoted as saying they hope to be on the air May 1 with HDTV from the network. Read it here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...a&pagenumber=4

I just sent a e-mail to Joe Addalia in Orlando to find out whats the hold up on WC on FOX. He is pretty good at answering. Will see. I talk to Jim [WKRG] and he said Media General was going to give two [2] of there stations the money to go HD,so I don't look for us to get it any time soon.
It looks like the only HD we will be getting is NBC[wpmi]
Bob
I read some where that NBC will have most of there prime time in HD this fall.
It looks like it will be a long long time before we get ABC WEAR in HD.

Received a response from Tim Reid today.

Quote:
We ran into a couple of transmission line problems which are being worked on this week. We will make the May 1 deadline as provided by the FCC and we hope to begin testing sometime next week. We will only provide the HDTV content that NBC provides, we will not be producing
any local HD content for the foreseeable future.

Thank You

Tim Reid

WJTC-TV UPN 44
Glad to hear things are progressing. If NBC increases their HDTV for the fall season, that would be great. Since E.R. is already shown letterbox on the regular broadcast, I surprised it isn't already HDTV. Maybe this fall!

Trich-
Joe from Emmis Orlando centralcasting is in Las Vegas this week for the NAB. He is looking at equipment for his stations and he is meeting with manufactuers like Tandberg TV to solve some of the equipment issues with encoders they are having. I sent him an email a few days ago about the time change and the PSIP for WB 18 and he gave me the impression that when he is away nothing gets done. Apparently he is the only person that does this stuff at this group.
If you are interested in how all this centracasting works check out these links.

If you are interested check out this link to some cool photos of the facility. 2 months ago the Central Florida-HD society went on a tour there.

Trich,

WTVQ in Lexington, KY is already digital (I can pick them up once in a while) but I understand they are not passing thru HD...they may be one of the two.

Would be nice for me but limit your chances.

Hi, guys...native Mobilian/South Florida transplant here. I saw the conclusion that WKRG-DT might not be viewable from Ft. Walton Beach while they're at low power.

Exactly how far away is Ft. Walton from the WKRG tower in northwest central Baldwin County, AL?

I only ask because when WFOR-DT, Miami was operating at 30 to 70 kw ERP at 1000ft. HAAT last summer I could get them here, 48 miles away, using a big antenna and preamp. See my Profile for antenna details.

Gee, Trich, rain on my parade some more :)

WMBB in Panama City is in range for us in Ft. Walton, and I have been trying to get some response from them. They didn't file a CP extension and are an ABC network. I was hoping they would have HDTV before the clueless folks at WEAR. With Mobile ranked 67 and Panama ranked 159, if WALA don't get HDTV, WMBB certainly won't.

David,

I looked it up before, the transmitter is ~64 miles from my house. I'm collecting my OTA setup now. Got a Samsung SIR-T150 chugging down my way by UPS right now. I'm not giving up yet, but I'm trying to be realistic.

This just in from Tim Reid at WPMI.

Quote:
When we turn WPMI-DT on, you will be able to see it. We will be operating at 1,000,000 watts.
Alright!

That was in respond to a question if they were doing a low power roll-out with the full power tranmitter coming on line later, such as WKRG. Much as I personally prefer Letterman over Leno, guess who I'll be falling asleep in front of next month :)

I think this is what is going to take place between now and this fall. WALA will have there 720p 16:9 up and running,WPMI will have there HD on line. This is going to put a lot of pressure on WKRG to do something besides just digital. Local advertisement could do it. WKRG was the first to go color in Mobile and they let every body know it. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Thats just my 2 cents.

guys, there are dozens of C/Ku setups free for the asking all over this area, add a used UM receiver and you can be enjoying ABC,NBC and PBS next week. Add a BEV receiver for CBS and you can stop worrying about the locals.

I just got this e-mail from Joe in Orlando in regards to our Fox [16:9]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Bobby,

We just received budget approval to purchase the necessary control equipment I mentioned in my last email. The manufacturer is quoting 60 days for delivery, and another 2 weeks for installation. We are pushing to get it done sooner.

Thanks for your comments on the quality. The new WALA facility and the facility here in Orlando are all Digital and as you can see, when an all digital signal is upconverted it looks great.

Just FYI, we are planning on changing to 720P60. We do not have a timeline for this yet, but if you see anything we should know about, please do not hesitate to pass it along to Johnny Reece at the station or myself.

Joe

Got my Samsung SIR-T150 STB Friday evening, and joined the ranks of DTV viewers.

Have the STB set up Saturday afternoon, UHF only. Can get WSRE but not WALA, of course. Everything’s fine until after 8 pm, when the programming disappears. Transmitter is still on, at least until about 10 when the signal strength meter drops to zero.

This normal for WSRE? I was expecting the regular schedule to be dropped about 7 pm (got the Ed Sullivan Show J, primetime 1966!) and then see the network feed, but I got nothing. You guys tune in to WSRE last night? Hoping I will at least see Nature in standard definition widescreen tonight and Shape of Life and American Family in HDTV on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Still working thing out on the antenna. I just stuck my old Winegard, after straightening the remaining bent elements, on a 20 foot tower. No pre-amp or anything. This antenna is one I took down about 6-7 years ago. It was a top-of-line model, with snap-in preamp module like the HD series. At least before the kids bent it all up stepping on it when climbing the fence. I can’t find the pre-amp, so I just connect a 300:75 transformer on the UHF section, which was in good shape. This is a temporary setup until I work out what I’m going to do.

Comparing the Radio Shack VU-190XR with the Channel Master CM3020, the gain and F/B ratio numbers look the same. May try the RS, which is on sale for $49.99 right now.

(Late edit)
It's after 7 pm Sunday, watching the last of the Ed Sullivan Show and then the lead-in to Nature. Had the typical sponsers message and then... nothing! Still no PBS feed in primetime. Wish I had the phone number of the station engineer so I could call him/her up and ask them to throw the switch for the correct feed. :(

Thanks for the heads up, trich. Did anyone catch WPMI-DT? Checked a few times yesterday afternoon and evening, here in FWB, nothing on my set.

Talking to Roland Phillips, station engineer at WSRE, about my problems picking up WSRE after 7 pm. He’s trying to get the problem straighten out after verifying that RCA DTC100 has remapping problems and getting a report from Alabama of a Sony STB losing the station when they went to the PBS HDTV feed. Was that you, trich? Thanks :)

Phillips is not happy to hear that you guys can’t get his signal without disabling the program guide or doing some other hocus-pocus. The station paid a lot of money to some outfit to get the guide encoding set up. He’s pressuring them to get the problem fixed. Stay tuned.

Phillips did mention that WSRE is transmitting 289 kilowatts, not the full 1 megawatts they are approved for. That’s 5.4 dB down from full strength. Reason I mentioned this, WPMI is on the same tower and going to be OTA at 1 megawatt from the start. If you’re getting WSRE now, you got it made for WPMI:)

trich,
The schedule I looking for is that of the PBS HDTV feed. No one knows of such a thing. Emailed PBS.org with that request, no respond yet.

Just to throw out a bit of random info...

I've never been able to receive wsre, neither analog or digital. well last night when i was searching for the wpmi signal i pulled in 23-2 with an avergae a little weak signal. Also had 23-1 and 23-3 but no picture being broadcast on those. Interestingly enough i still can't even get a phantom of a picture on the analog side, not that i'm interested in that...

All that said i'm still have a bit of trouble pulling in 3 wear at any good quality, get lots of jagged lines running diagonally through the screen. Any suggestions would be great. I have a cm 4248 and a wine 5030 connected to a cm 7777 in the attic. I probably need to go up there and move things around a lot more, but wondering if anyone had any pointers (other than put the antenna outside, that would break my covenant with my wife :) )

I've been checking every night for Leno on 47 at the starting time.
Haven't seen any testing yet. Think I'm going to now wait until May 1.
It's a pain with my Dish 6000. It won't allow me to program 47 as one of my channels until it can lock on a signal. So I have to go through all that again each time I want to check for the testing.

Daniel,

I wonder if there is something wrong with your setup. You’re maybe 20 miles from WEAR-3 and WSRE-31 transmitters. WSRE-23 is inside Pensacola, so that is farther away. Looking at my setup, I’m 61 miles from WSRE-31. I’m using an old Winegard, very close if not the same as HD8200, without any preamp. The thing is setup for UHF only, on a 20 foot tower. Now I can’t see WSRE-23 on this, but WSRE-31 is clear as a bell, with the exception of the problem I’m having after 7 pm with the switch to national PBS feed. I feel that this should be a cakewalk for you.

Check http://100kwatts.tmi.net/tv/MOB.html for the actual tower positions if you haven’t done this before. Just click on the tower symbols for a map.

I understand having to please the wife, so we’ll leave the outside antenna suggestion alone. At least for now, I’ve seen estimates of signal loss of 8-13 dB for inside antennas vs. outside so that would be an easy one. I think this assumes walls with two surfaces and insulation. Not sure what roof loss would be. But if the problem is multipath interference, not signal strength, then an outside antenna will not necessarly cure the problem.

So questions:
How high is the antenna above ground in the attic?
How long and what type is your downlead?
Are you using a rotor to position the antenna?
What's around your house? Tall trees, buildings, watertowers?
Have you tried using the antenna without the pre-amp? If it’s about 20 miles to the tower, maybe you’re overloading the STB input with the extra gain.
What STB are you using?

Bob,
I'm checking for 47 every night myself. Stay tuned here and I'm sure you get the word about the same time we all do. And maybe before May 1.

Rick

Here 's my setup as it is right now, will fool with it some more today.

My vhf antenna was mounted about halfway up my attic, not the very top as i had difficulty getting there. I need to work on this. Mostly i move it then run down the attic and check the tv :) very time consuming, finally my wife helped me a bit and the best reception of 3 came when i laid the front part of the antenna on the ground. (quick possible dumb question, the small elements are the front and the long elements are the rear? correct?)) (I'm some level below novice and above malcontent when dealing with antennas... )

I am running about 5ft of rg 6 quad from the vhf and about 5ft rg6 quad from the uhf to the cm 7777. One line may be a bit longer or shorter, but they are very close, I then have a 20ft fun of rg 6 regular running to my distribution room. From there i have it run into a high quality splitter that spreads out to 5 tv's in the house. 3 out of the 5 runs are rg 6 quad, 2 are rg 6 regular. The ones that matter are rg6 quad. I have tried a distribution amp (rs one) from this point and it causes havok with all channels. No run from this distribution point is longer than 50ft. At my main viewing room i have the signal split again into three rg 6 quads ( yes yes i know this is problematic, but i have a vcr, replay tv and a stb that i want to have a good signal, i'm working on new ideas to remedy this situation, as expected channel 55 is a bit worse in this room than the other rooms but better in all the other rooms.)

I am not using a rotor, looking at where the towers are i assumed i would be ok with a separate vhf and uhf antenna pointing towards the towers. That said the vhf antenna is way too big for a rotor. The uhf antenna right now is too low, i need to raise it but its really not a problem.

I have a good amount of pine trees around my house, but i am a bit on a hill. No watertowers or any other obstructions. To be honest i'm in a pretty good spot with proximity to towers, low land around me, etc that i thought my reception would be a cakewalk. I will say that when i was using a stealthtenna outside i was getting 3 in perfect, but did not have wsre at all and had terrible reception of 15. I've toyed with the idea of combining this outdoor stealthtenna with my uhf antenna using the cm 7777 and only receiving the vhf from the stealthtenna.

I have tried without the preamp and 3 doesn't come in at all, wsre is very poor and my reception of 9 drops a good bit . With the preamp 3 comes in a bit better, i actually get wsre though weak and only digital and i get a strong lock on 9.

I am using the zenith 1080. Reception on it is a bit better than on my vcr's in my other rooms, but again i'm splitting it in the main room so that needs to be remedied somehow.

I'd appreciate any advice, i'm going to move the antenna around a good bit in the attic in a minute, but i hate running up and down the attic ladder :) That said its a small sacrifice for a quality picture. Then again i've been called insane on more than one occasion... )

Don't know what is going on with the testing of [47] thay told me yesterday that thay would start in the afternoon, nothing yet. Daniel I went over to WKRG and WALAs towers and from your house to there is no more than about 6 miles. There is no antenna on WKRGs tower. As far as WSRE I get 94-96 signal strenght all the time but no picture after 7:00pm. I call them and they said that they had a problem.

Well i hooked my outdoor stealthtenna to my cm 4248 via cm 7777 and whammo, i'm pulling in all vhf very solid, 96-98 on 9, so thats sweet. Now i'm playing around with my cm 4248 to get 44 and 55 in better, i mounted the antenna very high in my attic and now have poorer reception on those channels, will play around some more and report, as an aside i have a giant winegard 5030 if someone needs one...

By the way its hot up there :)
