That could change, pending The Dish Network's challenge of the local broadcasting rules in the Supreme Court.

Today, they can only enable local broadcasts into the area they originate. (With the exception of people without access to OTA, or those with permission from their local broadcaster).

If those limitations were overturned, DirecTV could transmit a single HD feed nationally, making the required bandwidth feasible.
