HDTV Masters on 9-1 and regular programming SD on 9-2. This is the first time that WUSA will be multicasting. I hope it works out perfectly and doesn't degrade the HD signal at all.

I don't think they will be mulicasting. Analog channel 9 will be their regular programming and digital 9.1 will be Masters HD would be my bet.

Strange mix of coverage around the country. If you follow the start times at hdvgalaxy.com, the weekend start times are 9:30 and 8:30 AM. NYC's CBS DTV station didn't carry the Masters Thursday and probably not Friday. The fact that USA cable network carried non-HDTV coverage today, mentioned in a programming-forum thread, and watched here, doesn't explain why other areas of the country are getting the Masters in HDTV, but NYC isn't. -- John

9.01 and 9.02 are on the air now. Will see if CSI has any degredation.

HI all,

As I noted above, I took a look at CSI and the Saturday Masters presentation from WUSA. I think the HD quality of both was (is) substandard. CSI is usually about the best thing on, but it had a lot of artifacts this week that I had not noticed before. I believe it was a season or so old though so, that might account for part of it.

BUT, the Master's coverage is no where near last years quality. Quick pans are causing pixellation and color changes. This is particularly noticeable to me on the ball following cameras. It is taking a significant (noticeable) time to recreate the frame when the ground comes back into view. I looked for this kind of thing last year and did not see it.

I am wondering if it is because of the bandwidth stealing for 9.02.

Any Comments??

Have a Great HDTV Day,

Fred

I posted a comment on the other forum in the 'official masters' thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...9&pagenumber=5), but figured I'd chime in here as well.

The motion artifacts and related problems are horrible!

Definitely the worst HD sports presentation ever on CBS, probably not a whole lot better than the SuperBowl on FOX.

Belcherwm, since you have had correspondence with WUSA, maybe you could drop them a line and inquire as to the bitrate sacrifices they've made (or whatever it is) that has resulted in the degraded HD picture on 34.1.

WUSA should be notified that viewers have noticed serious degradation in the quality of their HD broadcasts.

FWIW, here on Capitol Hill I had no trouble locking up the signal from WJZ in Baltimore and it looked great to me. I theorize that since WJZ is a CBS O&O, and since they devote 100 percent of bandwidth to the 1080i feed, that the picture quality is as good as possible.

Anybody else compare WUSA with WJZ while watching the Master on Saturday?

WJZ is sharp and clear. WUSA fuzzy and soft. No contest. WUSA gets the big thumbs down.

I'll second the vote for WJZ. I had some breakups but I attribute them to movement in the room using my RDSB. Because of my location with building obstructions I've only been able to pick up the Balt. stations even though I'm closer to Wash. DC. I guess by the feedback I lucked out. :)
