Supposed to start today at 1PM. Got nothing for ~10 minutes, then ~1 sec of sound and video, then nothing.

Anyone?

Fixed it faster than I could post :)

After watching this for ~30 minutes, it's not as good as I would have thought.

Two problems:
It seems to me that some of the shots are streached (the video - not the golf :))

The other one is it appears that there is way too much edge enhancement - look to the left of the golfers pants and the left side of a golf club.

I'm not watching it (tommorrow), but not all the cameras are HD.

You have a right to install OTA and dish antennas on property under your control.

Sorry, folks, I'm off today doing taxes.

But, apparently the encoders locked up when they were being switched for golf. After a phone call I got everything should be alright now.

Also, while the main cameras are HD, many of the other cameras are not and are shared with the SD broadcast (USA today, CBS tomorrow) as well. Those are the ones that are being stretched. There just is not a HDTV production truck with enough cameras on board to do a full HDTV golf tournament yet. There are four to six cameras per hole and seven holes this year (so up to 40 cameras may be needed).

Is there any way to keep the aspect ratio when the cameras are switched from HD to SD? When streached like this, Arnold looks even heavier than he really is ;)

You've really only got three choices:

1) 4:3 centered in the 16:9 frame with sidepanels.
2) 4:3 zoomed to fill the 16:9 frame chopping off the foreheads and chins.
3) 4:3 stretched to fill the 16:9 frame creating short, fat golfers.

You can mix these together (ie 4:3 zoomed to 14:9 with some cropping and side panels to boot), but its all a compromise and often not a good one.

There's also:

4) 4:3 in a box overlaying an HDTV background shot. I.e., what HDNET does and similar to what PBS did in the Shape of Life series.

For a picture of the HDNET technique, see:

4:3 with side panels (colored if you like). I really don't understand why they would do anything else. Unless there's some technical reason which makes if more difficult to splice into the HD feed or something, it just doesn't make sense to do anything else. Why would you want to lose part of your image or distort it?

BTW, what was going on last night? I'm probably one of the few who uses DTV as my regular source for everyday programming so I watch quite a bit of SD simulcast. I was going to watch Survivor last night but it kept breaking up so much I gave up....:(

Survivor was OK for me.

I would prefer HD from the HD camera feeds and 4:3 with black (or whatever color or advertising or ...) bars on both sides.

Little fat golfers and basketball players almost ruins the total experiance.

The Survivor reception prob looks to have been my bad. I discovered on Sat that my antenna rotator settings were all off a bit. I have found that there is a very small "window" where I can get solid reception for all the local DTV transmissions without moving the antenna. I think the rotator might have become skewed a bit when I ran it all the way to one of the stops when trying to get analog reception of 22 last week for a Blazer game. After the Survivor probs Thur night, I realized that my 8-1 reception was also iffy Sat morning when I was watching the news so I checked them all and sure enough, they had all been moved a little. Reset the "DTV" position in the rotator memory and all seems to be good again.
