In today's SF Chroncle:

KQED hires Houston chief executive

Jeff Clarke is moving from Houston to SF. According to the article:

"I'm a strong proponent of digital and high-definition television," Clarke said yesterday. Not only would the new technology make the television picture clearer, he said, but "you can use the digital spectrum to break content up into multiple streams."

Sounds cool to me. Any comments from Houston?

Can't have it both ways. He says high def, and then says break content up into multiple streams. You are either HD or multicasting. Unless, they multicast daytime, and HD at night.

KQED has already gone the sad route of multicasting.
It sounds like this guy isn't going to help our
cause any...

I want 19Mbit/sec 1080i...

Actually, he's exactly correct. KQED is currently multicasting an HDef stream on 9-1 and a 480i stream on 9-2. Plenty of bandwidth to do both. I've got a tool to dump the streams and see what they're sending exactly. I haven't done that yet, but I'd guess that the HDef stream is 720P.

I would not agree that there is plenty of bandwidth to do both. The HD Demo loop shows pixellation in many scenes, even the 480i channel shows ill effects at times.

I believe KQED, and PBS in general, broadcasts HD in 1080i.
