I have an older Sharp 46" LCD HDTV (model #LC-60C46U) which includes a QAM 64/256 tuner in it. This secondary home theater setup also has a Toshiba DVR670 DVD-RW/VHS player recorder which also has a QAM tuner in it.
The local Charter cable service still has unscrambled HD channels coming over it. My TV is able to get most of them when I bypass the cable box. But I cannot get the Fox channel (11.1) on my TV.
But if I tune the Toshiba to 11.1 when bypassing the cable box, Fox on 11.1 comes in just fine. The DVR670 actually does a very nice job of retaining the 16:9 aspect ratio on the way to the TV, even though it passes it on as 480p over hdmi (it actually looks decent).
So - my question has to do with the QAM tuners. They do not all seem to be the same? Is the QAM tuner in my Sharp TV unable to get 11.1 because Charter is transmitting 11.1 in a non-standard channel setup or something that only newer QAM 64/256 tuners can handle?
