I take it Koin is still having issues as I am still getting pixelated & dropouts and haven't changed a damn thing. Should have checked here before I guess.

The signal from KOIN is still really bad, and my email to their engineering staff resulted in nothing but the sound of crickets.

I also had an HDHR3 that just couldn't deal with what this station is pumping out, but was hearing good things about the new tuner chip in their Generation 4 devices. I'm happy to report that the new HDHR4 is able to deal with the KOIN signal, and is showing a steady 100%/85%/100%. The previous HDHR3 unit showed a consistent 100% for Signal Strength, but the Signal Quality bounced around < 50% > and the Symbol Quality constantly dropped to 0.

Since the engineering staff at KOIN appears to think their current signal is just fine, those with older HDHomeRun tuners may want to consider upgrading to a newer unit.

Interesting news. I am sure I have an older model HDHR but not sure which one.

Wait Newegg tells me this - HDHR3-US HD.

So maybe I will wait and do some more testing as I have that plus a tuner card in my main PC.

Thanks for the heads up though!

KOIN Fixed? Came back from a trip and noted KOIN is again back in high 90's signal power on my Toshiba Regza TV. It had been down in the 60's/low 70's like the low power 17-2/27-2 stations when I posted this summer.

Anybody else notice?

When are the couple new networks mentioned gonna be on the air?

I get plenty of signal from KOIN, but it sure seems to break up and freeze quite a bit. It's the worse channel by far.

I hope Comcast will add it to my lineup soon. While I am not into westerns, I noticed some non-western action/adventure movies that I would likely watch if the channel were available to me.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Sony BDP-S3100 Blu-ray player, Roku N1000 (original model), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (120Mbps/12Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Preferred Plus), DVD/VHS player.

disregard what he is saying. He is living in "mythical land" that any current Sinclair duopoly will be nuked.

Apparently he feels the need to poison each market with a Sinclair station with that crap (folks seem to do that at radiodiscussions)

Apparently some people have this imagination about what stations should do with their programming or who they should sell to

mvcg66b3r apparently thinks that EVERY Sincalir duopoly should be abandoned and that they should cram as much crap onto one RF station (hence the same crap posted in the last 10 threads) even though there is nothing that says right now that the FCC is forcing companies to get rid of duopolies. They are cracking down on NEW duopolies

You're confusing yourself. Reread the quote

Basically he is living in mythical land where Sinclair should sell one of the stations they own (or run) in a duopoly market and cram everything onto one RF station.

No, the word "abandoned" implies that someone is "protecting" Sinclair stations at this point. I don't know of anyone protecting them from danger.

Obviously the other station would be affiliated with a network.

The posts I made here and on other threads are just pure speculation on just what might happen in these markets, with the FCC's crackdown on JSAs/SSAs and the impending incentive auction. Some of you may have been offended, and for that I apologize.

Hi, all.
I'm in the Tigard area and wanting to watch Portland RetroTV (Virtual 27.1, Real 49.4) on my PC with my TV Tuner card (ASUS EHC3-150).
RetroTV works fine on my Panasonic TV. No delays at all in the signal coming up and the signal strength looks good at 92%.
However, in Windows Media Center, I get the "No Signal, try again later message."
When I tune to RetroTV on NextPVR, the screen stays blank for probably a minute and then I can see the show.
Any initial thoughts?
Thanks!
UPDATE: 2/2/2015
I spent some time Friday and Saturday working on this.
I loaded TSReader Lite onto my system and noticed that on one occasion it said it couldn't get a lock on the channel.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would cause a locking issue?
Thanks!

Retro TV Portland KWVT should be virtual 27.2 -- 27.1 is KSLM in Salem (RF27). If you're entering 27.1, your TV may keep searching for subchannels and find it on 27.2 -- or you may be getting 27.1 from Salem off the backend of your antenna, as I do. I haven't got KWVT (RF49) for more than a few days since it got hit by lightning back when it was KPDX. Until KPDX moved, they ran on half power, and even with a whole lot more power than KWVT, it was unwatchable. Antenna has been repaired a couple times. I usually get the LPs without difficulty, but this one is the exception. You may be in a position to get it from Salem -- it is farther, but it may be line of sight, and thus easier.

Last I heard, they changed it back to match the Salem signal and thus it no longer maps to 27-2.

Unwatchable for you, came in fine (most of the time) for me.
2011_01_02 UPN: signal strength 97%, signal quality 100%, all
packets correct after FEC. (70 minutes)

2011_01_10 RetroTV: signal strength 80% signal quality 80% (1 minute test)

2011_01_11 RetroTV: signal strength 71% signal quality 35%
10102926 bad packets, even after FEC. (40 minutes)

2015_01_31 RetroTV: signal strength 100% signal quality 90%
481279 bad packets, even after FEC. (40 minutes)

2015_02_03 RetroTV: signal strength 100% signal quality 90%
all packets correct after FEC. (70 minutes)

The signal is weaker, but the main problem is the signal quality
which is a LOT lower, and varies a lot. A significant part of
their problem is their transmitter (power amplifier). Awhile
back their transmitter was down for repair, and they were running
a loaner transmitter with 1/2 the power. So the signal strength
was even weaker, but importantly, the signal quality was better,
and thus reception was significantly better and more reliable.

Hmmmm, given how long it took (weeks and weeks) KOIN to get their signal
quality up after the recent problem, it must be non-trivial to get things
adjusted properly. KATU (same antenna as KOIN) reception is better than it
was before the problem. Perhaps the RF49 folks could use some assistance
getting everything adjusted optimally?

They get the signal from the satelite at Salem and transmit it.
The Portland station receives the Salem station, reencodes it and
retransmits it. Soooo...If you can receive the Salem station
reliably, you're probably better off doing that. I played around
with tvfool and the numbers were so bad I decided to not even bother
trying.

Trip:
> Last I heard, they changed it back to match the Salem signal
> and thus it no longer maps to 27-2.

49-3 17.1 KWVT DT filter="0x0000 0x0030 0x0031 0x0034 0x0035"
49-4 27.1 RetroTV filter="0x0000 0x0040 0x0041 0x0044"
49-5 37.1 Azteca filter="0x0000 0x0050 0x0051 0x0054"
49-6 17.3 KODT filter="0x0000 0x0060 0x0061 0x0064"

"Grit" RF47 reception is another disaster. Seems to vary with time of day.

Konrad2, TalkingRat & Trip in VA,
Thanks for your messages.
I continue to have limited success tuning Real channel 49.4.
I have had emails back and forth with one of their engineers at their studio.
He's looking into it. If anyone has some technical data that may be helpful, I could pass it along.
Is the real channel 27 for Salem? I tried it but no success.

There appears to be a corelation between RF33 (KRCW/ant/this) and
RF49 (KWVT/retro/...). I noticed this in the past and mentioned it to NWTV
back in 2011. This corelation popped up again this week:

Code:
                 rf33 rf49
2015-02-10 tue perfect perfect
2015-02-11 wed perfect perfect
2015-02-12 thu perfect perfect
2015-02-13 fri perfect perfect
2015-02-14 sat perfect perfect
2015-02-15 sun mixed bad
2015-02-16 mon mixed bad
2015-02-17 tue mixed bad
2015-02-18 wed mixed perfect
2015-02-19 thu perfect perfect
"mixed" means some recording(s) perfect, others bad.
"bad" means some packets were still bad even after FEC.
The tuners reported the same excellent numbers as usual
for signal strength and quality.

(KATU, KOIN, KGW, KOPB, KPDX, KPTV were received perfectly
during this timeframe.)

The weather was approx 10 degrees F warmer than normal.
Was anything else different than usual? Barametric pressure?
Humidity? Cloud cover? Wind? Sun spots? Was anyone doing work
on the towers?

I don't see what these two stations might have in common.
Different towers, seperated in frequency, different power levels.

Anyone have an email address for KRCW's Engineering department?

KRCW for the past month would be pixelated and have dropouts signal 20%. I thought it might be the outside antenna but all the other stations were at 100%. Today I went into the menu of my LG TV and pushed 33 and the signal was 100% and the picture look great. So jumped out of menu and went to CH 2.1 then back to 32.1 and it look bad again. Went back to the menu when I was still on 32.1 and guess what it showed CH 5.So I deleted all 32 CH referring to 5 then went to CH 33 and 32.1 showed added that station then added 32.2 and 32.3. now every station great at 100% at Ne 122nd Ave Portland,OR

I caught Bruce Sussman on KATU-2 weather this morning. On his FB page Bruce says "Sometimes popping up on KATU News, Weather," so it appears to be an on demand assignment. Whenever I was channel surfing when Bruce was with KOIN, I stopped to listen when I spotted him. He makes the forecast memorable. His KOIN replacement IMO does not emphasize the essential stuff; it all sounds equally unimportant. I started getting my weather news online. But with Bruce back, I will be checking KATU, and hope he will land a regular assignment. .

KOPB is broadcasting garbage?

Earlier this morning, KOPB had a significant and unusual
reception problem. Now back to the usual good reception,
but the data is garbage. Mplayer and friends can't make
heads or tails of the data. A scan shows
8vsb:10: ss=94 snq=100 seq=100
but no programs?

Another one bites the dust :-(

12.2 is starting to show up. Tuner scan shows the program,
but no PIDs yet.

Schedule has been showing some good shows on that network
(as if we had time to watch them...).

But we lose another only-one-subchannel station. :-(

12.2 looks like it's not following the Cozi schedule yet. Maybe it's still in test mode.

While I was looking for updates on Cozi and Laff launch dates, I noticed that KPDX is getting a subchannel too -- Escape TV (49.2). I didn't find a launch date. Wikipedia says this about Escape TV:

Quote:
The network, which is targeted at women between the ages of 25 and 54 years old, primarily focuses on feature films, but also carries some true crime documentary series....Although the network mainly competes with digital multicast networks such as This TV, Movies, and GetTV, the network's gender-targeted format is similar to that of cable channels such as Lifetime and Oxygen.
