I got a new TV in December. I noticed that CBS 3 has a black bar across the top. Not all the way at the top but just below the edge of the screen. I never noticed with my old TV because of the horrendous overscan. I can't be the only one to notice this. It is the only channel that has this issue. It is very annoying. I have Comcast in case that matters.

I wish I could get it over the air, the station is low power and as far as I know they have no plans to go full power. I forgot about Conn., I am talking about CBS 3 Springfield.

I have the same on my Panasonic plasma with no overscan. My other tvs don't show it. I have Charter.

I figured you were talking about WSHM-LD, a.k.a. "CBS 3". It doesn't show up anymore with WFSB-TV's subchannels. I receive:

3-1 : CBS
3-3: Eyewitness News NOW
3-4: WFSB Fairfield County

I have the same issue with a 2010 Panasonic plasma on Comcast. Super annoying!

Reception in Westfield

I currently live in Westfield, MA and picked up an RCA 34792 attic antenna. The biggest issue I am having is with WGGB and WGBY as they are in the opposite direction of all the CT channels and WWLP. Right now I am pointed at around 100 degrees and am receiving WWLP, WFSB, WVIT, WTIC and WCCT. WGGB has a lot of breakups and WGBY no picture at all.

I am looking to replace this antenna with one better at receiving channels from the rear (WGGB is only 8 mi away) so I can point towards 192 where the bulk of the stations are.

Can anyone recommend a good antenna for this setup or let me know what is working for them in Westfield without a rotor.

I can't answer your question specifically since I don't live in the area, but an antenna like the Channel Master 4228 may be what you need. It picks up well from the back side and is good with high VHF channels like channel 22 (11).

As for PBS, are you receiving WEDH-TV channel 24 from Hartford? They use channel 45 for their digital and are at the same site as channel 20 (CW), 30 (NBC) and 61 (FOX).

trying to get channel 26 WHPX

Hi, I live in Chicopee, MA and am trying to get channel 26 WHPX from CT.
Did anyone ever have any luck? I am using a DB-8 antenna 30 ft AGL pointed directly at the tower, and no luck. I would consider a db-16 if you had any luck, or a pair of yagi coupled...

thanks

A generic TVFool plot for Chickopee indicates that WPHX's signal isn't going to make that trip, regardless of what antenna you throw up there unless you can get it several hundred feet in the air or if you happen to be located on high ground with a near-perfect view in that direction.

Thanks for the reply. TV fool shows WPHX as a 2Edge at a NM of 6.1. In theory I should be able to get it. In reality I have difficulty getting WCCT which is a much better signal.
I might upgrade to a DB 16 (using DB 8 now on rooftop) and see what that gets me.

In any case, thank you for the reply

Follow up to above:

Super G 1483 at about 30 ft AGL (+/- few feet) in Chicopee, MA pointed straight at WPHX transmitter works! There is some intermittent mild pixelation, but on the whole entirely watchable. No preamp, but I have a distribution amp about 15 feet from the antenna.

Unhappy

So it appears that WWLP DT-2 (22-2) will become a CW affiliate. The Springfield-Holyoke DMA has no good sub-channels to offer. I guess we will never get ME-TV or any other oldie sub-channels.

WSHM-LD recently replaced its weather loop with Cozi TV. Besides, we still don't know what Media General or WWLP wants to do with WFXQ-CD, so it wouldn't be farfetched for them to convert that to a Me-TV affiliate.

Besides, I don't mind that WWLP converted its DT2 channel to The CW. A local HD feed for the network was long overdue, anyway, even if my main reason for watching it (the Vortexx block) is long-gone, since replaced by educrap from Litton Entertainment (Google that company and you'll see why people hate it so much; I mainly hate it for its lame, boring shows and near-monopoly on over-the-air SatAM TV).

In other news, WTXX-LP is being sold off to Tyche Broadcasting. It was previously being sold off to Landover 5, but the owners objected to the latter's plans, which were to auction the spectrum off to wireless companies. Also, it switched earlier this week from AMGTV to infomercial due to financial problems. I know all this partly though a phone call from R&S Broadcasting, the station's current owner.

I know it's not WWLP's fault, but that CW "Summer" bug is like staring at a bare light bulb. It really makes it unwatchable to me.

ION IS ON CHANNEL 22-3

WWLP now has channel 22-3 which is carrying ION, the network that was formerly called PAX. Viewers trying to get ION from WHPX in New London now have a closer alternative.

Was wondering...is Channel 34, WESA-LP off the air? I used to be able to get it consistently, but fuzzy. Now I don't see anything. If they changed to digital, I'm sure it would be too weak for me. I also thought they may have been selling the frequency for a non-television use.

Edit: I see in the Hartford thread that this has been addressed. They have gone digital.
Hartford, CT - OTA

On a related topic, why do television manufacturers (I'm talking to you Samsung) think I'm too stupid to enter a channel number? If the channel didn't show up in the scan, I can't directly enter it! Now if I re-position the antenna to do another scan, some other channels drop off.

Paul

Heads up for the Dish subs in Springfield

Meredith and Dish are in a spat and you could go dark on Saturday. This means you would lose the Springfield ABC, FOX and CBS

Hartford already lost CW & FOX (Tribune) and may lose CBS too

Holyoke, MA OTA Reception

I am going to get the DirecTV Now offering and will need to receive local channels OTA.
I recently tried two indoor antennas from a previous address and get little/nothing here.

I can actually see the antenna farm for several stations from my front yard, but there are many trees here.

What would be a good antenna for this area? I was thinking Channel Master CM-4228HD mounted on the chimney of a two story house.
TV Fool plot is here for any who may be able to help.

I can find nobody in the area who installs except for BB, and I have had zero luck with them in the past, so it'll be a DIY thing.

The Springfield DMA wasn't really affected by the spectrum auction. It's all channel switches with no stations going off the air, which was probably a given considering the relative lack of stations in Springfield. That said, I though for sure WFXQ would wind up being sold given its status as a redundant translator, but nope, it's just moving from 28 to 21 (which is where WSHM currently resides; how are they gonna handle that?). Guess nobody offered enough money.

The FCC only bought out stations it needed and is moving all others. There's nothing here suggesting that WFXQ wasn't offered for sale, only that the FCC didn't need to buy it to fit them in the remaining TV channels.

WGBY is actually a winning bidder in the auction; they're getting a pile of change to move to high-VHF.
