I have the RS double bow tie and I receive all UHF HDTV broadcast perfectly from NW Suburbs of Chicago. I can't get CBS. I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to what indoor antenna I can use to get CBS. I tried cheap bunny ear antenna but I can't pick up any signals from CBS.

Additional information would be that CBS Chicago's WBBMDT is on VHF channel 3.

Pat

While I may link to and mention products as examples, I don't recommend specific products.

They had a brief human interest type of story describing the installation of their new antenna. They said that they would definitely have the new one up by the end of the year and more than likely by the end of November. Apparently the biggest problem is with the weather on the top of the building.

They just redid their news set, do they have enough $'s laying around to do it again?

While they did mention end of November I didn't take it as a 'likely' be done by the end of November, but it might be done as early as then. On the 10PM news they didn't make any mention of analog vs. digital antenna so I'm wonding if they would both go online at the same time or do analog first then do digital later. Gee, I wish Chuck deCourt was still around to let us know what was up.

Boy there must be some kind of localized bad-weather system up there. How else can you explain 2 years of bad weather? :D

I had just recently heard that on November 1st their signal strength would go from 30% to 60%. Is this the same issue as the new antenna or are they doing two different things?

I used to care about this, but I have almost no issues with CBS now. I used to get readings in the 70's back in June, but I've been solidly at 100% for a couple of months now. The only thing this will affect for me is the analog setup in my bedroom.

Feder states, "WBBM will shift to an interim news set, starting with its 11 a.m. newscast today. The move is in preparation for Sunday's launch of a new graphics package and on-air look for the CBS-owned station's newscasts".

New news set = big $$.

New antenna = big $$.

Doing new set = no new antenna :)

All kidding aside, I took a look at the Hancock last week (work downtown) and it looked like work was still going on on the antennas. Not sure what it is supposed to end up looking like, but one tower was still shorter than the other.

For those who live in areas where AT&T cable still provides 8vsb transmission of WBBM-DT (on cable Ch. 117-1 or UHF Ch. 61 0r 62), you can receive this channel without even subscribing to cable!! If you have AT&T local digital phone service or AT&T broadband internet service via coaxial cable, the WBBM-DT signal (which is a bit over 750 MHz) is coming into your household. A trap (probably 54-548 MHz) traps out cable channels 2-77 to keep you from getting free cable service, but leaves WBBM-DT intact. The AT&T digital telephone boxes have an internal splitter with a TV outlet. You can either connect to this or install your own 2-way 5-1000 MHz splitter, and see if you have WBBM-DT available. Because of the frequency over 750 MHZ, you can't combine this with a UHF antenna, but a good high isolation A/B switch will work fine. BTW, AT&T would not disapprove of such reception; they are carrying WBBM-DT because of their role in keeping it below 100% power for so long. I am sure they want as many of us as possible to get this important station, whether or not we happen to be cable subscribers!

Just to let you all know, the antenna construction
is continuing atop the Hancock, the old tower is coming
down, then the new one will go up. When this
is done, the east tower will be 40ft higher than the
west tower is now, and Ch 2 and Ch 3 will be at the top.
And, we will have a proper Ch 3 ant for DTV (currently
we're using a Ch 2 antenna, which could explain why
some of you are experiencing breakups).
We're hoping this will be done, and on-air around
late Nov, but obviously that totally depends on the
weather - we're already losing days because of it.
You have to remember, the weather up there is a lot
nastier than at street level. The city has mandated
that no heavy lifting be done if winds aloft are over
20mph, and of course rain shuts us down.
Don't think this isn't a high priority here - it's
our highest one. BTW, I haven't heard anything about
any HDTV cameras for local news, as someone here asked.
Hope this helps, keep the faith...

Wasn't there an accident last year where some scaffolding fell from the side of the Hancock? Working on top of the Hancock I'd imagine has some special problems. It's right near the lake, the location supposedly has the highest winds of any place in Chicago...and most important...the street below is filled with some of the richest (and subsequently most litigious) people in Chicago.

The scaffolding accident (not part of the WBBM project)
is, in fact, the main reason why this antenna work is so
far behind schedule. At that time, we were in process of getting permits from the city. After the accident, the city
started going over it all with a microscope, adding
a lot of time before they finally approved the work.

Lost my 6 month old Lexus in that accident, and 10 mintues later I could have lost my life. I was having luch at the Grill and had my car parked with the doorman of the Westin. Its not a bad thing to go over permits with a little scrutiny.

[EDIT] Sorry, that does sound a little crass and materialistic. Lets never forget the lives that WERE lost that day, and all pray it never happens again. [/EDIT]

dynamohum 1..

Televes..reference 1291 is a 9 element VHF antenna with a gain of around 8db...Traix also makes a very complete line of VHF antennas. I am leaving room on my mast for a VHF antenna in the future. Right now, all my digital/HD stations are above 20.

Dyna I think it will be quite amazing if you can pull in WBBM-DT (with any antenna in any conditions) Heck many of us in their so-called service area struggle to get a watchable signal. Out of curiosity do any of our Chicago UHFs ever reach Peoria? Are you aware that two of our stations are on the same frequency as two of your Peoria analogs? WGN-DT is on UHF 19, and WFLD-DT is on UHF 31. I believe those are your areas analog CBS and ABC stations.

I have on occasion picked up all the stations from chicago for hours on end, with the exception of 19-1 and the 31 digital also never had digital 3...no vhf antenna up. I have watched WGN digital late at night when the local 19 has signed off. An engineer at WHOI 19 told me that in the northern parts of the coverage area they get a lot of complaints that WHOI cannot be recieved because of interference from digital WGN, they called the FCC and were told to live with it because they are going to lose the analog channel anyway.

dynamohum1,
I use a cut to channel 3 antenna for CBS-DT and a channel master 4228 for everyone else 30 miles north of the loop with a channel master preamp. Both in the attic, 2 story, wood siding, pretty good (not perfect on CBS), very high quality on all the rest

A couple of questions: Does the "cut to Channel 3" antenna really work that much better and a standard VHF\\UHF antenna?

When they do complete the new antenna for DTV-3 on the Hancock building do they anticipate reception will improve in the western suburbs where very few of us can get a signal today? Or will the power still need to up to 100%?

I have my doubts that I will ever get a consistant WBBM digital signal on 3 here in Oswego. I'm not holding my breath.:(

esimonso,

good question. for me the answer has been yes. seems like i started on this project over a year ago when CBS-DT was at low power and reception was very poor. it was a bit of an twisted path -- i re-cabled with RG-6 QS, used the Thomas & Betts snap and seal connectors, added the channel master preamp and still had poor reception. i got the cut to channel 3 idea from some thread on this forum -- still not perfect. i would wait till they get the new antenna up and running and they go to 100% power and see how it looks for you.
