I am in Lower Merion PA and use Comcast. I also had no HD 8 Simple Rules -- just a blank screen.

William,
If you go to antennaweb.org and put in your location it will tell you what you should be able to get depending on the antenna used.

Thanks Barrybud! My problem is that when I go to 2150.com/broadcast/default.asp
I get different compass directions (accounted for the different ways the two site account for magnetic deviation) than antennaweb.org

My thinking is that antenna.org improperly gives only ONE direction for BOTH digital and analog stations, but 2150.com is smart enough to give separate directions for both.

Can anyone confirm the use of 2150 for the Phila digital by eyeball. I mean, you look the direction 2150.com reports and using a telescope you see the tower?

TIA

William

Toss out your HDTV. www.UHDV.com (Ultra High Resolution Television) has 16 times the image components (horizontal x vertical scan)!

FYI, in the 5200 Forum of AVS, the following was posted:

"BTW in Philly, Fox EDTV is up on channel 183, Starting Today. InHD & InHD2 will be up permanently on 9/15."

Fox 29 is indeed up in the entire Philly market on Comcast, channel 183. Now on to KYW-DT on 182!

I just ran my location on 2150 and found that the difference on lets say ABC WPVI 64 is 102.1 than WPVI 6 is 101.9. Three tenths of a degree is splitting hairs even with a 60 element antenna (tighter pattern) you will still have at least 10-15 degree pattern off the front end with no attenuation in the lobe.

My guess is that the digital antenna is on the same tower as analog, maybe just lower for now. If not a another tower in the same farm I think that 99% of Philla stations transmit out of Roxboro.

I used to know a guy who worked for a company that did the maintenance for WCAU's tower and antenna's. But he is no longer with them. He could have helped with info on when they are placing their stick in the tower.

Fox 29's 480p widescreen looks pretty good upconverted to 720p by the 5200, then on to my Sharp 9000 DLP.
Not HD, but surely a huge improvement over 480i / 4:3 AR.
Especially for today's NFL games.
PQ looks equal to my OTA Samsung 165.
Now, where's their deal with KYW-3 (CBS owned affiliate here in Philly)?
Are Comcast and CBS even DISCUSSING anything at this point?

But did you notice the stupendous volume differential between the FOX national broadcast and then any local commercials via FOX digital over the air?

I had to turn my volume substantially higher to hear the football game, but then when any local FOX TV (WTXF) commercials came on, it blasted you out of the room.

The local volume is set too high AND the national volume was set too low. Both are bad.

How can this be fixed? Anyone have a contact at WTXF-DT?

Thank you so much for your responses to my prior two posts. Based on your information and more test data, I have determined a more probable cause for antenna.org vs. 2150.com antenna pointing differences.

I now speculate that the cause of the 45 degree difference in my case is NOT the digital vs. analog antenna locations. Instead it is input rounding at 2150.com

I live one half-block from the Art Museum steps in Philadelphia (+39.965377, -075.177384). For WPVI, Antenna.org indicates 342 degrees, but 2150.com indicates 296 degrees - that is a 44 degree difference. The difference is significant to me in that 342 degrees is dead behind a building, but a tower near 296 degrees can be eyeballed with a telescope by me. [I have ignored the -12 degrees 23 minute east magnetic deviation at my location in this post so that I do not lose everyone. That deviation was carefully noted and considered.]

2150.com requires you to round your input to whole number latitude and longitude. However, the rounded latitude and longitude of 40 degrees, -75 degrees is located in Jersey near Pennsauken. Because that location is further north and because I live only 12 miles from the tower, the angle is lower (simplifying the geometry and triangle thing). That is my best guess.

In all fairness, I will E-mail 2150.com and invite them to post a response in this thread.

Thanks again everyone, I will post any additional info if I get it personally and it is not posted.

William

William, I ran a listing using your location (39.965377,-75.177384) leaving 0 for magnetic deviation and WPVI (digital) shows 327.1 degrees and a distance of 6.35 miles.

This seems to conflict with your saying you got a 296 degree direction and 12 miles away from it.

WPVI (digital) is located at 40deg 2min 33sec, 75deg 14min 33sec, which is 40.0425, -75.2425.

To confirm, I looked at some satellite photos:

Tower:

Your location:

There's no rounding involved. The form just needs locations input as decimal, which would be H + M/60 + S/3600.

Anyone watching INHD, "Further Than" (or Farther than, I don't know)...

It looks GORGEOUS.

It's HD footage of a team reaching the top of mt. Everest.

1. The first blind climber to reach the summit
2. The oldest person to reach the summit (64)
3. The first father/son team to reach the summit.
4. The most people to reach the summit (19)
And... the best thing of all...
5. The first HD filming of climbers to the top of Mt. Everest! Spectacular!

P.S. So far, I'm pleased with INHD... we'll see what happens on the 15th..

dswallow:

Thank you so much for checking my data dswallow, I really appreciate it. The reason I provided all the details was exactly that reason.

I now know the cause of the disparity I encountered, I am an HDidiot.

When I initially input +39,965377, the 2150.com edit indicated Please enter only digit characters in the latitude field." So I unnecessarily edited it back to +39, still receiving the edit error, I edited to 39 which worked. I then rerounded to 40. I did the same thing to the longitude (truncated).

What I should have done was simply change +39,965377 to 39,965377.

My mess-up in entering the data was the cause of the differences in compass direction and differences in distance. I live 6.35 miles away from the tower, blocked by a building.

In short, 2150.com gives, as it always has, the best website information on what digital and analog signals you can receive (and each signal's direction).

I want to now thank dswallow who not only double checked my data, but provided great aerial photos.

William

Thanks again.

William

Is anyone getting a picture for UPN 57? I'm getting a signal strength of 82 on my DTC-100 for 57-1, but it is saying "week signal" and "accessing channel" when I try to tune to it. When I try to imput 32-1, it just hangs at "accesssing channel" and says "week signal." Any tips from anyone out there?

With the talk of UPN going HD with Enterprise at somepoint this season (I'm hoping to be surprised tonight), I was hoping that I'd be able to tune to WPSG. I redid my channel search and WPSG is coming in nice and clear for me now on both 32-1 and 57-1.

I can't get a picture either. I only get a signal strength of 13 on my md120. Usually I get a 60.
