It's the same problem with 5.1 vs. stereo that existed when FM stereo first came out. If you turn the enhancement on and off, some recievers no longer lock into the signal, and you have to (in this case) tune off of the channel and then back onto it.
This is, of course, not desirable. Thus my inclination at this point to just leave 5.1 enabled, and sometimes its in stereo and sometimes its in full surround - but not switch back and forth into and out of 5.1 encoding mode.
I talked with the guys at WRTV, and they do pretty much the same thing for the same reason.
The other possibility, for the time being, is to just activate 5.1 for the once-a-month or so special program that features true surround.
I'll probably learn a bit more about 5.1 mode switching at the broadcaster's convention next week - and give the forum a chance to vote in the interim .
In the meantime, I'm leaving it in 5.1 for the Final Four this coming weekend.
