No, I'm in Danville, IL. The reason I posted it to this thread was that, by my math, the center of the ducting was approximately the Bloomington, IN area.

Here's the latest information relating to WISH.

http://www.ibj.com/wish-wndy-owner-a.../article/49212

Earlier this morning, the Indy area received some fairly strong tropo signals from the northeast, including Fort Wayne, Toledo, Detroit, Wheatley (Ontario), Flint and Bay City/Saginaw, MI area.

the real questions are......

Was CBS greedy and asking too much for the programs they provide, or was WISH-8 greedy and not willing to pay a fair price for the programs CBS provides?

Was WTTV willing to pay the same amount demanded of WISH-8, or did they get to pay a lower price so CBS could send a message to other stations currently bargaining with CBS?

Wlfi

I have just read that WLFI (LaFayette) has had their contract renewed (for seven more years) to carry a CBS feed. This does not really surprise me. Even though WLFI and WISH are, currently, closely tied together for feeds and promos, I didn't see how WISH losing the CBS contract would force WLFI to also lose their ties to CBS.

This contract extension also includes area stations WTHI-TV, Terre Haute and WANE, Fort Wayne.
http://www.cbscorporation.com/news-article.php?id=1082

WTHI, WANE and WLFI, along with several other LIN stations, are mostly controlled through the master control hub located in the WISH/WNDY building on N. Meridian St. I had an opportunity to see this operation several years ago. More information about the hub is mentioned here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WISH-TV

Indianapolis has become quite a TV hub center, as WRTV 6 is expanding its hub operation since it was purchased by E. W. Scripps. The master control center at WRTV will run 19 Scripps TV stations around the country.

WTHR-TV, DirecTV fail to reach fee agreement

It's not about serving its viewers in the "public interest", it's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$. It's always good to have an OTA antenna as an option to these issues.

I've been away from Indiana for work for a few weeks, and I'm finding that an antenna, a Netflix subscription, and an Amazon Prime subscription (and an HDMI cable from the laptop to the TV) works really well. If I was here permanently, I'd get the new tiVO that wraps all of these services up into a single UI.

I think ESPN and the other sports networks is all that's keeping these #!$&ing cable/satellite companies alive.

"Unlike DirecTV, WTHR cares about our community." Oh, really??? LOL WTHR is the one that isn't allowing DirecTV to carry its programming during this dispute. So, WTHR cares so much about its community that it ceases its signal via DirecTV while the two sides bicker over their toys like 4-year-olds. Okay, now I've got it.

I know it's only NBC, but WISH-8 might be interested in this network come Jan. 1, 2015.

Not a chance. WTHR has been nothing short of dominant in the local market.

Also, there is nothing at all surprising about the shutoff during the retrans disagreement. They have to use what leverage they have.

So, CBS is switching its network affiliation from WISH to WTTV because WTTV is a more dominant station in the local market?

To be fair, CBS is on the top of its game right now, but a lot of network affiliates are very complacent. "We're the incumbent, it would take them a lot to switch on us." This happening in a major market is bigger than just WISH, it's CBS stating their intention to exert more influence and control over their affiliates network, which makes sense for a network in the #1 spot. "We've got the content you want, but, to get it, you'll have to play hardball, even if you're an incumbent affiliate." Personally, I don't care for CBS's line up (or any of the networks' for that matter), but it is extremely popular, and I see nothing wrong with CBS aggressively pursuing new affiliations when another affiliate in the market values the line up more. Granted, it's just rather shocking to see it happen to such a long term affiliate in a big market.

I totally agree. That's the point I was trying to make. I guess I should have ended my last post with <sarcasm off>.

As for the WTHR and DirecTV dispute, no matter what the final outcome is, the loser will be DirecTV customers.

Raycom, Dispatch Video pull broadcast channels off DirecTV

Here's an interesting article about the WTHR and DirecTV dispute. So which side "pulled the plug?"

"Broadcasters Raycom Media and Dispatch Video have pulled their channels off DirecTV (NASDAQ: DTV) after failing to come to a retrans agreement with the satellite operator by Aug. 31."

or

"For its part, Dispatch Video's Indianapolis-based NBC affiliate WTHR seems to be claiming that DirecTV has removed it from their system."

It's a far more dynamic situation than that. Difficult for you to understand, I see. CBS saw an opportunity and need to make waves in the market, NBC already has the powerhouse partnership in the area.

A little decent tropo ducting into Indy last hour. This was logged by the autoscan setup at 5:41 a.m.

WCBI 35 COLUMBUS, MS 453 mi 199 deg last in: Thu Sep 4 05:41:08 2014

A couple DXers in IL and KY are doing better than this.

I can't believe I missed that! However, sleep is pretty important. We seem to be getting some better tropo now than we have all year. (Which is good, since the e-skip season is over, AM DXing is still rotten this time of year, and SW DXing is hard with these abysmal peak sunspot numbers. Pretty much the only DXing we have this time of year.)

So, I've been in Richmond VA for awhile, and I watched the Notre Dame game on the local NBC affiliate, and I'm currently watching the Packers-Seahawks game. It's amazing how absolutely perfect the HD picture is here on NBC compared to the poo they serve up on WTHR.

There is absolutely no artifacting, no pixilation during dissolves, nor weird shimmers and compression artifacts around the score banner. It's as perfect an HD picture as I can ever remember seeing (and they run a MeTV subchannel too).

How's WTHR this year? Same as always?

Yes, isn't it nice to watch the game without all the "extras?" Nothing has changed with WTHR.

I didn't watch much of last night's game, but I did see parts of it on WLEX, Lexington, KY while DXing some stations around the area. It wasn't the greatest PQ but somewhat better than from WTHR. When I can receive it, WISE, the NBC affiliate in Fort Wayne, seems to do a great job with the HD PQ. Unfortunately, reception from Fort Wayne was hit and miss last night.

If you are still in Richmond this Sunday evening, enjoy the Colts game with your great HD picture.

My reception of WFYI (Indy PBS) and WTIU (Bloomington PBS) failed last night at about 7:45 PM. "Weak or No Signal" message. Can I presume this to be result of tropo?

I've also been receiving much blocking for the past few weeks on WRTV (Indy ABC). Might some tropo be at play here, too?

I'm in Columbus, IN.

Thx,

Hi Tom. Most likely your reception issues have been caused by co-channel interference, as a result of tropospheric enhancement. We've recently had some fairly strong out-of-market signals into this area.

For example, WTIU, on RF channel 14, might have been fighting with WCMH, Columbus, OH, which is also on channel 14. I watched a few minutes of last night's NFL game on WCMH. Meanwhile, about 90 minutes later, even with the antenna aimed toward Columbus, WTIU was blasting in here, overtaking WCMH.

Thanks, Steve. Yep WCMH was the interfering station vs. WFIU, tho' it at first it simply knocked my signal out last night. It wasn't until this morning that WCMH's picture came in loud & strong. Weird stuff, this... WFYI was being overpowerd by some channel 40 WHMB, offering a 2006 broadcast show of Jimmy Bakker! (I thought I might have been abducted by some invading Martians!)

Maybe this latter was due to my briefly bypassing my set top box and going direct ANT into my television in hopes of isolating what last night's problem was; I likely didn't realize I should have punched in ch. 21 for WFYI. When I punched in 20, it jumped immediately to Jimmy Bakker on virtual 40. I won't be doing that again soon...

Just want this nonsense to come to an end...

WISH-TV is missing program information this morning. RF channel 9 is coming up 9-3, 9-4 and 9-5 instead of 8-1, 8-2 and 8-3. RF channel 17 is coming up 17-3, 17-4 and 17-5 instead of 8-1, 8-2 and 8-3.

PSIP is back on WISH. After sending an email to the station, it was back on within a few minutes. Per attached hourly monitoring graph of WISH, it came back on around 12:27 p.m. Nice job, WISH.

Guess I spoke too soon. Fox is airing the Giants-Tigers game. (I could have *sworn* this weekend game had disappeared from their schedule; haven't caught it in well over a month.)

I need something to save me from the onslaught of football, both college and pro. It's just too much any longer.
