ION & Tribune Stations Destroying Audio

Thanks for the update on WLFI adding ION TV to 18.3. I'm on the far north side of Indy and I just rotated the antenna towards Rossville to check it out.

Since WTTV/WTTK can't figure out how to properly process its audio, I am ready to start watching WLFI when watching CBS. WLFI knows how to properly process audio and in Dolby Digital 5.1, too. WTTV/WTTK has been totally screwed up since it switched to CBS 51 weeks ago. You'd think they could figure it out within almost a year.

While watching the Colts game this afternoon on WTTV's sister station WXIN, it now sounds as though the engineering department has screwed up audio on WXIN, too. The volume levels are all over the place. It is constantly shifting up and down. It is very fatiguing, irritating to listen to. I do not hear this on any other stations, including all the other local broadcast stations and tons of cable channels. It seems to be a unique issue with the local Tribune stations.

I've just glanced at a few shows on 18.3. The shows I saw were in a 4:3 format originally. It appears they are "stretching" these shows to fill a 16:9 frame. IOW, everybody looks "fat". I wish they wouldn't do that. Please leave programs in the original format they were recorded. Black bars on the sides of 4:3 shows do NOT bother me at all. And, the actors look "normal" when in the original format. Plus, I believe they could save a little bandwidth by doing this. Just an observation.

Some interesting E-skip (Sporadic E) has made for some very distant DTV reception in parts of the Midwest over the past few days. E-skip affects the lower RF frequencies used by TV channels 2-6. http://www.mike-willis.com/Tutorial/sporadicE.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sporadic_E_propagation Currently, not many DTV stations are utilizing these lower RF channels but with the FCC's auction and repacking plan of the current DTV channels, some stations may decide to sell their highly-valued UHF RF frequency channel and move to a less-valued VHF-low channel (2-6). If this pans out, E-skip may end up affecting more DTV stations.

Here's an example of E-skip reception since Christmas Day from a remote DTV reception site in a very rural area approximately 100 miles northwest of Indy and 85 miles south of Chicago, away from a lot of the RF interference in the cities.

WLBZ 2/2, Bangor, ME @ 1001 miles.
KTVM 6/6 and KXLF 5/4, Butte, MT @ 1300 miles.
CKSA 2/2, Lloydminster, Alberta (Canada) @ 1367 miles.

So the new antenna I put up which does NOT include the channels 2-6 may be useless in the near future?
I LOVE the FCC and the broadcast television stations who clearly don't care about anything except selling their programming to cable and satellite TV.

The E-skip is indeed nuts.
I hear a lot of weird stations coming in on FM radio lately, which I assume is the same phenomenon since FM is between VHF 6 and VHF 7.

Thanks for the update.

FM radio has been interesting lately, I assume it is the same phenomenon.

Have to love the FCC and broadcast stations. Just put up a new DTV antenna, which does NOT have channels 2 through 6. But since the greedy broadcast stations are mainly concerned with selling their programming to cable and satellite providers, and could care less about their actual broadcast, this nonsense actually makes some sense.

Thanks for the update!

For those in the LaFayette viewing area--I mentioned in an earlier post (three up from this one), that I had noticed that the aired shows (originally in 4:3 format) were being stretched to fill a 16:9 format on 18.3. I checked in yesterday and it appears that ALL shows are being stretched. This not only includes 4:3 shows, but also 16:9 format shows. And, ID tags are being stretched. So, all in all, it appears that the entire ION programming on this sub-channel is going through some electronic device that stretches (horizontally) everything. The 16:9 shows end up with black bars on the top and bottom of the video. And of course, every person appears "fat". It would be nice if WLFI corrected this. Plus (as I had mentioned), I would think it would save them some bandwidth. Just an observation and FYI.

Weird.
4-3 isn't there, 29-3 is indeed Comet. Information shows "SIGN OFF" from 2:00 PM to 10:00.
29-3 --> It is a really strange movie.
29-2 --> has no video (audio OK) on my TV.

I'd say we have a work in progress.

You might try a note to the stations engineering staff. Seemed to help with the Indy stations when the transition was occurring.

If they just have to fill the screen zooming the 4:3 material is less objectionable than the stretched Fat-O-Vision. Zoom does lose the top and bottom bits. Personally I'd rather have them just leave it as produced and window box it.

4-3 now is now Comet, but 29-2 still has no video - I assume they'll get that straightened out.

Just trying to grab your attention with the previous post and attempting to grab more AQH (Average Quarter Hour) time from potential viewers.........

Nathill, I am seeing a delayed decode of video on WTTK 29.2 and then once the video is displayed there is another delay before the audio comes in, which then leads to the video and audio not being synced together. The audio is lagging behind the video. Interesting. Meanwhile, the same feed on WTTV 4.2 seems to be fine.

Good idea about contacting them.

And, I concur that I would rather have 4:3 zoomed, rather than stretched. But, overall, like you, the best way to broadcast 4:3 is to just broadcast it in it's original format!

My older model Samsung CRT HDTV (TXS 3082WH) continues to have no video whatsoever on 29-2, but works fine on 4-2.
Makes no sense, but that seems to be the deal for the moment!

Welcome to 2016. Here in Indy a few things have changed while some needed changes have not changed.

1. WISH-8 has added Justice Network on 8.3 while the WISH weather radar is now gone.

2. WTHR-13 appears to be status quo with its very poor fast motion artifacts and blur.

3. WTTV-4/WTTK-29 continues to air poorly processed audio from CBS. This afternoon's LSU/Florida basketball game was very bad.

4. WFYI-20 still has not returned to Dolby Digital 5.1 audio after a long absence. Meanwhile, other area PBS stations WTIU-30 and WIPB-49 offer DD 5.1.

Did WRTV (Ch. 6) lose their radar? For the last several days, when the radar was shown on 6.2, it had a lot of video "static". In place of showing the radar, now, they are showing area wide "weather cameras". Just curious.

Update for any that care---Channel 6.2 now has the radar back and it is now "static" free. Looks like they got it repaired.

WISH signal strength

A question for those in the LaFayette area using an antenna for reception from Indianapolis---

I've always been able to get the Indy stations on my antenna without much of a problem. Channel 8 (WISH) has always been the station that has had the lowest signal strength for me. But, I've usually been able to have a strong enough signal to get at least a 16-17 db/SNR. All other stations are routinely between 20-28 db/SNR (depending on each individual station). Over the last month, or so, channel 8 has (~95% of the time) been showing me ZERO signal level. Nothing has changed in my house and all other Indy stations are at their normal levels. Only 8 has changed. Has 8 lowered their xmtr power or changed their radiation pattern? Has anybody else noticed a decrease in received signal level from 8? Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

I'm S. E. of you in Anderson and have also had problems with WISH 8.1 .2 .3 in the past. lucky for me, their L.P. translator is aimed toward me and works quite well. But relative to your question, possibly, lately I've been having some intermittent pixilation issues on 13.1 -.2 -.3 so perhaps its an atmospheric anomaly thing. Just a guess....

Maybe it is a coincidence here. As of last night, as I had mentioned, I was getting a ZERO RF signal from 8. This morning, the signal level is back to "normal" (for my location). Now-it might have been atmospheric "skip" that was my problem, but I doubt it. The loss of signal I had, had been in place for a few weeks. And, none of the other Indy stations changed in received power--only 8. "Skip" conditions usually only last a day or so. Just a guess--MAYBE somebody at 8 follows this thread and asked the xmtr guys if all was normal with radiation patterns and/or ERP. PERHAPS an error was found in checking this out and was corrected. As I said-this is just a guess. If this is correct, I thank whomever checked into this. Anyway, it's nice to be able to see 8's programming again (finally). As an aside--it's been a few weeks since I've seen 8's programming. So-it sort of surprised me that the weather channel is gone from .2 and radar is gone from .3. I always like to be able to check the forecast and radar whenever I wanted to. But, the weather probably was not making any money for the station. Henceforth, the change to "regular programming".

WISH added Justice Network in January and GetTV on Feb 1st
Both were agreements between Media General and the respective diginets.

WLFI added GetTV same timeframe
