I called the station three times and TWC about this. You can thank me and the girl in the newsroom for getting this straightened out.

1) it is being passed thru to the cable DVR's during network time only.
2) the cable DVR's see the flag and abort the recording because they know they are not supposed to record the "flagged" program.
3) the cable box then says, wait, I'm scheduled to record, and goes back into record but then sees the flag and aborts the recording, hence the multiple segments.

The flag is present during network time on WCCB and WACH, as well as
all other FOX affiliates across the country.

From the Wall Street Journal -

"Another reason the broadcast flag won't unduly burden the average person is that, as the name suggests, it covers only broadcast television, the sort sent free over the airwaves to antennas. Most people get their TV from cable or satellite, whose providers will be offering their own forms of copy protection for their digital broadcasts."

Does any part of the signal from Fox to TWC come over the air? If not it seems it should not even be there.

Although we provide fiber from most broadcasters to our headends, the stations are still classified as Broadcast Television and the rule applies.

---On the The "redistribution control descriptor" (broadcast flag) issue---

So how does this explain this scenario?

I record Fox on the SD channel. I do this to make sure I get my program sometimes it fails completely on HD because of this issue. If I am watching the same program on the HD channel (820) and I use any of the DVR functions that cause me to not be watching live any longer while one of these broadcast flags are received. The DVR says it is still recording on the SD channel. However, when I do a playback. The data from the recorded program stopped where the broadcast flag was received. Info says it is 1 hour, but only x amount of minutes are playable. On top of that, I cannot restart the record unless I stop it and erase what was recorded so far.

American idol comes on TWCSC channels 7 and 820.

From this point on....
TP= (Technical Problem) "the issue that you have been discussing on this forum regarding FOX and DVRs stopping and starting"
NOT LIVE= not watching in real time mode. Means I have pressed pause, rewind, slow motion and not up to live transmission in time line.

I set the DVR to record American Idol on either Channel 7 or Channel 820 it doesn't matter which. If I am gone or am watching TV in real time mode (no rewinding, pausing, slow motion), American Idol records in multiple sets on 820 or 1 set on channel 7, but I get it all.

However, If I am watching 820, NOT LIVE and the TP happens, The recording stops and DVR functions stop working. I have to erase what it has recorded so far before it will start recording again or DVR functions are restored.

This seems to only happen if I am recording American Idol on channel 7 or 820 while watching 820 NOT LIVE. If I am recording on another channel, the recording process does not seem to be affected by what goes on on channel 820.

I have already had the DVR replaced. The explorer 8000HD would not even record 820 in multiple sets. At least the 8300HD does start recording again if I am watching live or not at home.

I hope this is clearer for you.

I contacted WBTW again and this time I actually got a quick response. Here is what they had to say.

----Quoting from WBTW email----
While our parent company has reached agreements with some of the major cable players, we are still probably a few months away from an agreement with Time Warner.

Ok the reason the issues only occur on the HD DVR recordins for Fox is because the HD feed goes through a separate receiver that includes the copywrite flag 'issue' that has been discussed.

The Standard Definition receiver is a separate unit and is not impacted by the issue.

Hope this helps.

Ok, I think you still misunderstood my posting. It does affect the SD recordings on my DVR, but only on the SD channel 7 if I am watching the corresponding time period on HD channel 820 and use the DVR functions.

Go Cardinals!

From 1995-2004, I lived across the river from Louisville in Indiana, always cheering for the Louisville Cardinals in a divided territory. I watched lack of character coaches come and go from IU(Knight) and Purdue(Keady). Rick Pitino is the best coach in basketball. He gets players to the next level.
Is Lon Kruger still the Illinois coach? Just kidding. I jokingly jab at Diana's Illini.

Pitino's a good college coach but nobody has done what Jim Calhoun did at CT. Sorry.

Whoops - Almost Forgot!

Daylight Savings Time Change and Potential Issues for your DVR

Daylight Savings Time takes place Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 2:00am. There are certain recordings that may be negatively impacted by the Daylight Savings Time. Please take note of the following trouble areas:

Scheduled Recordings - Those that you set up through your Interactive Program Guide

1. Scheduled recordings that end within one hour of the time change window (1:59am to 3:00am) may not end correctly.
2. Scheduled recordings that you schedule within one hour of the time change (between 1:00am and 3:00am), including instant recordings, may not schedule correctly.

Manual Recordings - Those you set up through the Preferences screen by manually specifying the channel, the start and stop time. [Press LIST, then the B key, then select Schedule a new Manual Recording].

1. Manual recordings that are scheduled for anytime on April 3rd, regardless of whether you schedule the recording before or on April 3rd, will start recording one hour earlier than they should, unless you schedule the recording to start one hour earlier than it appears in the programming grid. Although it may seem like you are scheduling a recording for the wrong program, the program that is scheduled to broadcast one hour later will be recorded.

The company that manufacturers our DRVs is committed to continue to work on eliminating these issues for future time changes.

Fox-HD audio problems continue for me. The 5.1 light on my receiver cuts in and out and the audio cuts in and out. The audio on the analog stereo pairs also play intermittantly. Other channels with 5.1 play fine. Anyone else have this problem?

During law and order from 10 to 11 the channel 10 red white and blue logo kept popping up in the lower right corner of the screen. The HD picture was fine the sound was fine but about every 30 seconds or so the logo would pop up for about 5 to 10 seconds and then go away. When it was gone you could see the NBC logo that was fairly faint but visible. It was very annoying. Anyone else have the problem or know why it was that way? It was the only NBC show we watched last night so do know about the rest of the day/night.

Is there some reason this channel has had a blank screen for the past couple of days? No picture and no sound. All other HD channels are fine.

Same problem on TWC Fox channel 820. American Idol records in multiple segments on the 8300HD. I will continue to report this until it is fixed.

Hi There,

I want to be very careful here. I recognize that my participation on this Forum is contingent upon my not inundating you with a whole bunch of sales talk.

With that in mind, for any VOOM customer's out there about to lose their signal, we have created a special promotion just for you. Please go to www.twcsc.com for more info.

If I have crossed a line I would appreciate hearing from you so that I don't make the same mistake in the future.
