Has anyone heard a timeline for introduction of HDTV in the Atlanta area on AT&T Broadband? Per the new regulations, they are required to start offering channels in January 2003, but no one I have spoken to at AT&T appears to even knows what HDTV is, much less when/how it will be available.
With 7 OTA HDTV stations in Atlanta, I'm trying to decide whether I should buy a STB now or wait the next fews months (or years?) for HDTV over cable. Any suggestions?
I noticed there were some others having the same problem with NBC HD and CBS HD missing/unable to tune. Has anyone been able to figure out what is going on?
I am using a Media Center box with Windows 7, and none of the 3 NBC HD, or CBS HD channels are working. Following others on the thread, I first added a QAM channel 73.1 64 bit modulation. This didn't work, so I changed the modulation to 256. Neither way was I able to tune into the HD versions of the channel.
Has anyone gotten this to work on another system? If so what did you do? What channel did you re-map to? I am going to rescan the channels later tonight after my recordings are done. Anyone have any other thoughts?
I really, really want to figure this out before the olympics start.

The Moto SB6120 does not have etma. There are fewer of the D3/etma modems in retail market and they are much more expensive.
To the nerds of the world, sorry for the typo. Most people just need to know what general features of the modem are needed to get the service they desired without the technical details. (I really didn't have to use EMTA acronym, just modems that also has voice data capability, or VOIP - voice over internet protocol.)
In case people want the extensive technical details of other acronym I used, below is the link that explains DOCSIS, including 3.0 version:

For all,
Once they transition to digital, will they be blocking the QAM content soon after that, or have they left QAM turned on so that a set with QAM tuner can still display programming without the DTA. The DTA's are clunky and slow, but at least yield an expanded lineup on the analog sets I plugged them into. If I plug the DTA into an HD ready set, will I lose the HD channels I'm currently pulling in through the QAM tuner?
Based on what they've done in other markets so far, yes we will lose all but the locals in clear QAM after the migration. If you use the DTA, you will also lose all the HD channels because they cheaped out and didn't put composite (or S-video) outputs in the box, so you either run the cable from the wall or from the DTA into your TV. Yes, it sucks, but they want you to rent their overpriced HD STB for HD sets anyway. The DTAs are only intended for use with old analog sets.
Frankly, you'd be much better served with a Tivo HD or one of the new 4-tuner Cablecard HTPC cards when they come out. There's no way I'm paying Comcast $9/mo. extra just so I can watch all the non-local channels in HD. I could add an extra Tivo to my account for $7/mo. and get a DVR for less than what I'd pay for an STB. All you lose is VOD.
I have great cell coverage at home and zero interest in VOIP, so I'll be pitching the $85 investment to the finance committee. If I pick up a new modem, I'll let you know how it works vs. the 5 year old docsis 1 model surfboard.
As to the loss of HD with the DTA, I'd love to pick up a Tivo HD, but the finance committee shoots that investment down every 6 months. Looks like I'll ride the QAM until I lose that option, then figure out a way to run coax direct to the TV for local HD and split the DTA signal through an old VCR running S-Video out (or something along those lines).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but CC customers have a choice of either 2 free DTAs or 1 free STB per household. But I'm not sure if that depends on what service tier you have. If you only need one unit, you can get a free STB instead of 2 free DTAs. I'm not sure though what the STB can do as far as local stations HD broadcasts. You may want to give CC a call and see what the STB can do in that regard.
You get a free STB *and* 2 free DTAs, but the free STB will not be HD. You have to pay $8/mo. extra for that (I think), according to the latest rate card. I think this is just wrong when all the channels are available in HD (or soon will be), but it's going to be a while before an HD STB is priced reasonably or included with service.
Note that you get all the HD channels included with your tier of service, but you can't actually watch anything but the locals in HD without renting (or buying) some sort of HD STB or DVR.
On Saturday, I went to the Cascade Rd. office and got the HD/DVR DCX 3400. My box has been rebooting everyday since Monday. As soon as the guide loads and I set my series recordings, it reboots and takes a full day to reload the guide information. Is this a defective box or is it a common problem with the new boxes?
I have a new 52" Sony Bravia LCD with a comcast motorola box. About 50% of the time if I am watching a HD Channel and switch to another HD channel the left side of the screen shows a smushed version of the new channel while the right side of the screen displays a frozen and distored picture from the previous channel. In addition, If I attempt to go to another HD channel I will see the previous comcast menu bar stretched and displayed on top of the current menu bar. I can correct this problem by switching to a "non" HD channel and back. Is this a Comcast or Television problem? I am anxious to know before my 30 return policy expires.

Spent a lot of time at my folks' over the holidays, and they have DISH. Picture is soooo much better, though in fairness, part of that could be that they have a nice Sony 1080p set.

I think it's 1 STB and 2 DTAs AND the STB can be HD (they were making a big deal before about free HD). I know I have 2 DTAs and a HD DVR . . . I pay $10 for the DVR portion and the HD is free (I was paying $17 until they came out with "free HD", I called and had them drop it to $10)
BTW, will be interesting to see if I get the new channels on the 15th as I was told a few months ago . . . I'm in 30071, G1, Norcross . . . I'll let ya'll know if I do
I'm using SageTV with an AverMedia TV tuner, and I've tried all variations of the above numbers with no luck. Anyone with tips on how I can get NBC back?
Does anybody know what equipment Comcast is using as a non-DVR HD box in Atlanta? I have a self-install kit coming my way and want to read up on what's in it. Also wondering if they handle HDMI by default now or if it's still luck of the draw.
I have a Moto DCX 3200 which is Comcast's newest HD only box. It has HDMI connection. The tech installed it, but it was just a matter of hooking up the cable to the box and HDMI to the TV and calling CC to configure the new box.
You can change the settings by turning off the box (using the remote or the buttons on the box) and quickly pressing menu button. You can then change or experiment the settings in accordance with the type of HDTV you have as well as your viewing preference. One suggestion is to set the HDMI output to 1080i (or 720p if you have a 720 HDTV) as it will allow changing of channels to be more prompt than if you use the native setting. Some TVs are faster than others to change its resolutions but my 2-year old 1080p Samsung plasma is quite slow.

Yeah, that's what I was paying . .$5.95 for HD and $10 for DVR, but when they were advertising free HD (which in the fine print is 1st outlet only is free), I called and asked them about it and they dropped the $5.95 portion . . . I only pay $10 now ('DVR service', or something like that)
Just Digital Basic (or is it starter? Sorry, don't have the bill in front of me)
