What was the deal with the NFC championship game last night on fox? I was at a friend's house and his TV was giving a rather unexpected "encrypted signal" error. I thought it was a typical reception or TV issue, but then today I saw on facebook that others were unable to watch it too.

Did WPGH actually broadcast this game?

Thanks. I try not to be that guy asking if a station is off the air because he is having reception problems. But that night we couldn't receive it in the two households we tried and a friend in the neighborhood also couldn't get reception.

Anyway, good to hear it wasn't a contractual issue resulting in a blackout. While the NHL is mostly unavailable via antenna, at least the NFL is still broadcasting OTA.

Is anyone else having trouble picking up 4-3 and 4-4 today? We lost them on all 3 TVs at home (2 different antennas) and I couldn't get them at work today either.

Losing 4-3 and 4-4 can't be that big of a deal. Aren't they *occasional* duplicate feeds of 4-1 WTAE and 4-2 THISTV? Once in a great while I will pick them up and they automatically appear in my channel lineup.

4-3 and 4-4 are broadcasting identical content as 4-1 and 4-3 as far as I know. This is because some WTAE's main broadcast tower had to be located too far from their northern viewership. They would prefer a more central location but it isn't permitted. If I remember correctly, this would encroach on the territory of a station in Youngstown. WTAE's solution was to broadcast on a second frequency to better cover the poor reception areas.

The chief engineer of WTAE used to post here on a regular basis. As I recall, the current Buena Vista site was selected for two reasons in the late 1950's. The station was to have been licensed to Irwin and a location closer in to Pittsburgh would have created short-spacing to channel 4 in Columbus.

Now that WTAE's digital is on RF-51, I see no co-channel conflict. The adjacent channels (on RF-50) nearby are WEAO in Akron and WQLN in Erie. I'm not sure that moving to, say, Ivory Avenue would have been undoable because of technical reasons or perhaps it may be simply that Hearst owns the property at Buena Vista.

By the way, it appears that the digital antenna isn't at the top of the tower. Their analog height was 961' and the current HAAT is 895'. Another 66' of elevation probably wouldn't hurt.

RF 22 is a low power translator broadcasting from the QED tower in Oakland, for those within and north of Pittsburgh who can't receive the main signal from Elizabeth Township. It's mapped as 4-3 and 4-4 to avoid issues with those who might get 4-1 and 4-2 as well.

I hope they haven't cut back on their signal strength intentionally....

Has anyone noticed a drop of signal strength from WPCW -19 ? I still receive them, but signal drops at night . Im using a 4221 CHANNEL MASTER antenna in my bedroom.I have used this setup for years now, and had no difficulties receiving this station in the past. All the other stations are fine, except 19. Antenna -Point says that they are broadcasting on 6.5KW . This does not seem like a lot of power for supposedly such a popular network afiliated with KDKA.

I noticed THECOOLTV was absent from 22-2 beginning this past weekend and initially replaced with dead air, now 22-2 has been deleted entirely.

According to their Facebook page, they are in a carriage dispute with numerous station groups including Sinclair and it was removed from their stations on September 1.

Can't seem to get WPGH (53.1) at all any more on any kind of consistent basis. I live in Moon Twp PA. I never have any problem getting 22.1, which is supposed to be on the same tower, only 10 miles from my house. It's a shame my best FOX station is channel 8 from Altoona (60 miles away!), which I get with very few issues. I e-mailed WPGH, but as in the past, I never get any kind of response on these inquiries. The OTA broadcast quality seems very low on the priority list these days. Anyone else noticing the same issues? Is there something interfering with the signal?

WPMY's facility (RF-42) is on the co-owned WPGH (RF-43) tower on Ivory Avenue, not far from where WPXI now has its studios. WPMY (once WPTT) did have the analog plant out out east on route 286, near the Monroeville-Murraysville border.

I live in West Mifflin, and my friend in Whitaker and we both have been having problems with WPGH . What I'm experiencing is a picture freezing and pixulalization . I have my signal meter on and it reads strong, but still freezes. This has been going on for about a month and a half.My friend called WPGH and probably got some college kid who dont know what OTH even is! They are only concerned with comcast and Verizon customers. I refuse to pay those outrageous rates. Hopefully the video board that is producing the problem will get worse, so that someone can replace it.Sound has not been an issue. I dont feel it's a transmitter problem.I only watch 2 shows on fox anyway. If Im desparate enough I will tury my antenna east to get fox 8 .

WTRF Channel 7 (RF Channel 7) in Wheeling has tried something different with its OTA broadcasts. I think WKBN (Youngstown, OH) has done this also, but not with 3 channels. They are broadcasting CBS programming in 1080i on channel 7.1, FOX programming in 480p on channel 7.2, and ABC programming in 720p on channel 7.3.

Before we work on artificial intelligence why don't we do something about natural stupidity?

And how does that look? WKBN eventually put CBS on 27.1 back to 1080 and dropped Fox on 27.2 back to 480 while keeping thier LP on 19.1 at 720P. When they tried to squeeze 2 720P streams it didn't look that great.

It's actually not that bad. Not as clean as KDKA which only has 1 channel, and WTAE which has 2. They have a strong signal here in Washington County. Probably with a good rooftop antenna, you should be able to receive them in most parts of Pittsburgh (unless you are terrain blocked).

Hi all,
I am a newbie here and will be moving to Pittsburgh (South Park). I am interested in learning what OTA channels I can see on my HDTV, and the TV Fool's report is here
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d1dda49ae3f2ecf

If I understand it correctly, I cannot get any channels other than PBS with an indoor antenna (e.g., Terk FDTV2, or HDTVi ), am I correct, or does the amplifier help with the yellow channels?
Thanks!

I have found that amps are a waste of time and money. If possible,an antenna placed outside is your best bet.I know this time of the year is bad for talking about this, but we may have another break in the weather. Use good RG6 cable a rotor is preferable, but try to get the thing outside.Get a compass and check your signal directions by going to tv fool . Dont waste you money on those flat square indoor antennas.I live close to you so if you need help just ask. Good luck!smile.gif
