It's still baffling to me why TV stations will spend millions on a mega tower to reach viewers OTA but expect the cable and satellite carriers to pay for the same transmission. rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

If everyone watched OTA, the stations would only compete against a handful of competitors, meaning they'd have a much larger percentage of the total viewers and could charge a lot more for the ads, making the retrans dollars unnecessary. With cable and satellite having 80% or so subscription rate, they compete against hundreds or thousands of channels, meaning their share is much smaller. To make up the difference in what the advertisers are willing to pay, they ask the cable and satellite companies to pay them, just as they do many less popular channels in their lineups.

Someone can correct me if the logic there is wrong.

You know, most people here don't go around openly bragging about their circumvention of the rules & system...

It's baffling to me why people complain about the pittance broadcasters get, all while having no clue as to what makes their cable bills so high to start with..ESPN, Turner, Viacom, etc..who get far more..(and air a buttload of commercials too) .rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

Those with Dish, did WSFA go off the air? I don't know how much the locals contribute to the overall costs of your cable bill but I've heard that the primary culprits of increased bills are ESPN/Disney and the RSNs.

Yes, WSFA is replaced with a static screen telling about how Raycom has blocked your access.......you know, kind of how Dish would block your access if you didn't pay what they want.

It would be interesting to find out how much various channels cost the end user and how much goes to either the cable or satellite companies.

I do like my OTA and streaming content from Amazon. Haven't quite figured out how to get some of these shows off the net onto my display. Don't want to watch it on a computer screen. Anyone know?

For Amazon to TV the best options are Roku or apps enabled blu ray player. My Panny BR plays Amazon paid and Prime in HD via HDMI.

Jim,My Laptop has a display port, I use a DisplayPort> HDMi adapter for when I travel. Otherwise, go find you a broken or refurb BluRay player that has Amazon on it. I bought some panasonics for that purpose cheap.

I've got several services on my panny, oppo player and Tivo. That's not the problem.

What I'm trying to figure out is if someone were to drop their cable/satellite service because they're just not watching that many shows for what they're paying their provider, if there is a way to get some of these shows off of the internet at no cost. What I'm finding is that you can get those but you already have to be subscribed to a cable/satellite company to be able to log in, therefore, you'd still be a subscriber. That defeat the point of dropping cable/satellite. I do understand that for other than OTA, content isn't free. Just thought there might be a way around it.

I installed a PC in my entertainment rack with a Blu-Ray disk, windows 7, and wireless keyboard and mouse.
The video card has HDMI out with audio and then goes into one of my input sources on my Pioneer Elite Receiver.

I need to work on the hardware and upgrade it a little more because it chokes on full screen 1080p

I also have Apple TV as another source and it works very well with any apple IOS device. I have an Ipad 4th gen and a Iphone5.
My goal is to move away from a 170 dollar a month satellite bill but I'm not there yet.

We have several prime time shows that we are addicted to. Mostly CBS in the Fall and A&E, USA, TNT in the summer.
And we still desire to watch live sporting events like NASCAR, and SEC football.

I know I can cut my Satellite bill by dropping Premium Channels, and cut back to 1 DVR but I don't think I can Eliminate it at this time.

I have been watching a lot of Tv outside when rain and skeeters permit me to on my iPad. I use the soon to be disco'd Orb via my server to see all of my sources. The cheap AverMedia HomeFreeAvplus is used for my Dish Rx viewing. Between that, the FOX News, DirecTv and Dish app, I can get most content with it.

That's kind of the problem. Even if you can get 80% of your content off the air via antenna, what are you going to do about the other 20%. Who want's to give up college football and Duck Dynasty? smile.gif

Can you get streaming off of the internet for SEC games (ESPN) while they're actually being played?

the sec game of the week is on cbs, you could stream it on cbssports.com if you want , but its always better in 1080i OTA!

on espn3 you use to be able to stream all the CFB games live, but the cable providers must have pressured them on it and now its only some you can watch live, the rest you have to wait an hour after the game has finished to watch the replay. and for anyone who likes college gameday, you miss out on that as well by only having espn3.

with the espn app on xbox, i got the games in 720p HD even, when all the games were free to stream it was cfb heaven.

Has anyone seen the rolling billboard driving around town paid for by Dish claiming WSFA wants to increase their fees 4x what they are now?

Ironically the truck was parked in front of RSA tower about 4:00 this afternoon but I didn't have the opportunity to snap a picture.

Yes, it's true..

In an emailed statement Friday night, spokesman John Hall said Montgomery-based Raycom Media and DISH have come to a distribution agreement regarding the retransmission of Raycom TV stations in 36 markets, including Huntsville's WAFF-48, WBRC in Birmingham, WDFX in Dothan and WSFA in Montgomery.

Dish 622 DVR, B'ham locals via Dish, Montgomery locals OTA, Winegard on 70' tower + CM7777 preamp

For those on BrightHouse -

last month I upgraded my old cable box for their newer HDTV box. Better pic quality and much better programming sound via my Wireworld Silver Starlight HDMI cable!

So, as of the 26th, I will be dropping my dish service. $113 a month is just too much to spend, so I decided to go the OTA and streaming route. I bought a $40 GE antenna from Walmart on a whim, becuse ever since the digital switch over, my rabbit ears can't pick nothing up. However, this GE antenna with the "Best Range" only picked up the APT station. I took it back to walmart and exchanged it for a $100 Antenna Direct model that supossedly has a 50+ mile range. I hooked it up directly to my HDTV, and just sitting on the floor, I was able to pick up several channels from Montgomery, but no NBC.

You need an antenna that can pick up VHF and UHF like the Channel Master 4228. WSFA is VHF while the rest are UHF. I get all Channels on a 4228 with preamp in my attic in the Redland area. It's rated for over 60 miles.

Well, I am about a mile north of Cobbs Ford right off of Hwy 31, and I am shocked that I can't get 12 with this new antenna. I am hopeful that I can adjust the antenna in the attic and get it working then.

The ClearStream 2V does get VHF, I've used it 50+ miles from Jeff City and Columbia out toads central Missouri. However, if you post your TVFool plot, we can look at it and help diagnose why you're not getting it. Simply throwing a different antenna or an amp at it will usually waste your time and money.

Common reasons are: Low power on VHF station compared to UHF stations, odd location of VHF station relative to receiving location, terrain blocking signal path, FM interference, other electrical noise/interference, didn't rescan, etc.

WSFA has good signal strength on VHF 12. I think the 4228 may work better in his situation and with the landscape of Montgomery locals. At least that is my experience in our local market. I've tested 4228s in 4-5 different areas around the river region with great success. I've got no allegiance to the 4228 other than it just works in my experience.

Hmmn, the TVFool is neat and shows me that I should be picking up more channels. I guess I need to get a compass when I install the antenna next week.

So a question I have, when I set it up in my attic and connect it to my house's coaxial networks, with probably 10 or so connection points, do I need to have something to make sure the signal doesn't degrade between the antenna and the three or so TVs/HTPC that will be connected to it?
