Not sure which Monoprice you have. Is it VHF as well as UHF? It appears accept for WNYT that you're not getting any VHF stations...and you're probably getting them on 18, instead of 12.

You're not getting Fox 23, (1,2, or 3) because they're on RF 7. You're not getting WNYA 51 (1,2, or 3) because they're on RF13.

If the monoprice has VHF, obviously it's not strong enough. For VHF I personally like the Antennacraft Y5-7-13 (it works great for me) There's also a larger Y10-7-13. Most of the popular antennas are UHF only. The Clearstream 2 has a VHF option, but if you're planning to keep the Monoprice for the UHF stations, then the separate VHF antenna might be your best option.

That should work if you don't care about getting WRGB (CBS) on 6. And you might not if you're happy with the 720p version of it on 45.3 (RF 43). You'll only lose this TV (6.2) and Comet (6.3) which you're not getting now anyway. You'd need a larger antenna to get 6 well, not because it's weak but because lower frequencies need wider antennas.

Since the Winegard is more directional than your panel you might lose WYPX (55.x, RF 50). You'll probably get WNYT (13.x) on RF 12 instead of or in addition to RF 18, which you're probably getting it on now. If you get both it might confuse your TV since it will see two channels both calling themselves virtual channel 13.

Finally, you will probably get WNYA (51.x, RF 13) which has mostly oldies, some of them classics.

Has TWC made any changes to their CATV system in this market: dropping analog, encrypting all the OTA digital (thanks to the FCC) and elimination of that damn SDV (Switched Digital Video) in this market?

.
.
Free, abundant OTA television separates this country from many others. ATSC1 has only been in force since 2009. The wireless industry has enough spectrum. Enough of 'planned obsolesce'.

How does it appear in Buffalo? Our locals are all HD and still seen on their corresponding low-band cable allocations plus the digital upper-tier. What's the result of the OTA digital being encrypted?

For a minute there, I didn't think anyone was watching TV in the Albany market anymore.

Using your equipment, the 'locals' show up using their conventional analog number and subchannel designation (2.1, 4.1, 7.1 etc.). Using their equipment they show up as their old analog analog number, no subchannel (2. 4, 7).

But, that wasn't the question. Has TWC completely dropped analog and what is the status of SDV? Are they still using it assuming the switch was made in this market? You will only know this if you use your equipment (specially a TiVo for example).

Or to put it another way, are there any TiVo (or similar) owners that have CC's (Cable Cards) and a 'Tuning Adapter' (STA120)?

Yeah...sometimes I think I'm the only one awake around here too!

I'm not a TiVo user so I wouldn't know about that and I'm not familiar with SDV. But I'll give you an example of the analog statement.

My MIL has cable on a TV w/o a set-top box. Her locals come up with the sub-channels... 10.1 .. 13.1 ... etc. With a box they'll appear on the channel numer without the subchannel. But then are repeated along with the sub-channels far up on the expanded tier...(the 1200 channel block).

Same here with the duplicated fictitious 1200 numbers.

Yes, I have a TiVo Roamio with cable cards and tuning adapter in the Albany system.

Did they complete the changeover; have they eliminated analog channels and are they still using SDV? When were notices sent out regarding the changes (assuming the changes took place)?

Channel 15 WEPT-CD On the move?

I'm not really good at reading these applications but it looks like WEPT is interested in moving off Overlook Mountain and relocating itself to Illinois Mountain across the river from Poughkeepsie?

Time Warner Albany will turn off analog this summer.

What does that mean for Time Warner Troy?

Will I lose reception on direct coax connection? IE: Wall coax [cable in]------to-------[TV]

Does that mean that QAM is caput? Does this also affect the Berkshires?

QAM isn't kaput. That's the modulation used by all U.S. cable companies, not counting IPTV. But clear (unencrypted) QAM might be. That's up to TWC's new owner, Charter, which is changing its name to Spectrum. Cable companies aren't allowed to encrypt locals until they drop all of their analog and meet certain other requirements. Comcast chose to encrypt everything. Only Spectrum can say what they're planning.

Another question of interest to those using a PC and CableCARD tuner as a DVR is whether Spectrum will continue TWC's policy of setting DRM (not the same as encryption) to "Copy Once," which currently only Windows Media Center can deal with, and WMC is being phased out by Microsoft.

As for feeding cable directly to a TV, if it's an old analog-only TV then obviously you'll lose programming. If it's digital then maybe, maybe not. If Spectrum encrypts locals they'll have to supply at least one tuner free for a while but I don't know the details. When Comcast did that, the tuner was a bare minimum one with only analog RF output.

It might be time to brush up on antenna theory. That could be a problem in the Berkshires but see Once More, Out to the DTV Fringe for some tips.

Thanks ebo. The location I'm referring to in the Berkshires is not my home. I have NO cable at home so I use Satellite and OTA. OTA is passable, but I recently lost Fox 23 due to the new 9 acre solar array that Jiminy Peak installed about 1,000 feet from my driveway. The location I'm referring to is a commercial location and there is no option for OTA. There is also no option to upgrade to digital cable with a box unless the cable company does it for free, which isn't likely I imagine.

Dave

Will "Spectrum" be better than TWC??

Does anyone have experience with Charter or Spectrum yet?
