I watched the basketball game last night on 13-1. The Digital Closed Captioning was working I believe for the first time. The problem I saw was that it was supposed to be captioned above the top of the screen for basketball, but for some reason, it was first captioned across the bottom and when that line was done, it would move that line to the top.

It was very confusing to watch. The other thing was that when I tried to turn off the captioning, it would not do it. The screen would flash the same old "This feature is not available now" even thou behind it I could see the captioning.

Today, the captioning is not working at all on 13-1 - but the live broadcast of the Truman arrival is on and maybe that is not digital CC.

Any ideas what's up.

Also - an earlier message from 3/20/03 said that the closed captioning on 43-1 was working, but I just checked it and apparently its not.

Also - Last night during the basketball game, I noticed bright flashes on the whole screen at random times throughout the game. I noticed them in the past on my old Sony set also. They looked like a flash camera went off, but after a while, I could tell that was not the case. Is that what they mean by "motion artifacts? If not, does anyone know what that is?

It only seems to happen during sporting evnets - at least that is the only time I notice.

Finally, I just bought a new Mitsubishi 42 set from John Chester yesterday. It does not have a tuner. Anyone have a suggestion for a good over the air tuner? It would be nice if the tuner could also decode the basic Cox Signal.

Thanks,

Bob Gonsoulin

I can't get video or audio on WAVY-DT. Signal meter reads a signal is present. I did a channel scan and all of them except WAVY-DT were there.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Same here... WAVY-DT signal strength in the 70s, no video or audio... even after a channel rescan.

Luckily nothing in HD tonight on NBC.

OK... here's another strange one:

I cannot watch WTKR-DT tonight. Everytime I attempt to watch "King of Queens", the audio cannot get sync'd (my Integra DTR-7 flashes a few times) then my DTC-100 turns off. I've duplicated this twice.

All the other DTs (except for WAVY) seem to be OK.

Is it just me? I've not noticed this before tonight, but I haven't tried to watch WTKR-DT in the last few night either.

It isn't you Gary. I'm getting the same thing here in Driver and I can look at WTKR's antenna. They are having problems I assume.

WTKR-DT return to 100% power at 7:05pm Tuesday.....
Audio problem was a power bump at the studio on Monday. I was out of town and did not know about it until Tuesday morning.

Ted,

Thanks for the update. I had never experienced an OTA error that would forcibly turn off my receiver.

Everything is perfect tonight. WTKR-DT signal in the mid-to-upper 80s and perfect sound... and "The Guardian" looks great!

Can I receive dt siginals from 70 miles away. I have a wide screen hd ready tv. Do I still need a digital receiver to receive digital signals or is that built in the tv. I am aware that i need a hd receiver to receive hd signal. I use direct tv most of the time, is the digital decoder built in the directv reciever.

tayward,

I am 72 miles from the transmitters in Driver/Suffolk. I am using an amped ChannelMaster 4228 antenna. I am able to receive all but one of the Norfolk DT stations. Sometimes the weather and atmospheric conditions make it impossible to watch but it is usually there when I need it.

You will need an unobstructed view of the northeast. Looking at the map, you may be closer than 70 miles from the transmitters in Suffolk. Remember, determine mileage "as the crow flies not as the car drives."

There are some TVs that have built-in HD tuners, but more than likely you will need one. Let us know which model TV/DirecTV receivers you have.

Gary,
Thanks for the info. I have a RCA with utv model dwd49ore. I am sure it does not have hd receiver. Toshiba hd ready tv. The hd receiver is the digital decoder, is that right? Are there only digital receivers that are less expensive than the hd receivers. After reading more on the forum, I have learned that I must have hd receiver the receive the digital stations, even if they are not broadcasting in hd. Am I correct?

Tayward:

You will need a digital television (DTV) receiver. The high definition (HD) formats - 720p, 720i and 1080i - are a subset of the other formats supported by the DTV standard. That is, when you buy an over-the-air (OTA) receiver for your HD ready television, all of the HD formats will be supported by it.

WTKR-DT is now running 3-3. It is running at 3.5 MB/s, 3-2 was reduced by .5 MB/s, so this is only taking 3.0 MB/s out of 3-1. This will be in effect for about two weeks.

I am also having some 708 CC issues with 3-1 and will get back to it once the USS TR returns.

John H.,
Where did the picture and sound on 15-1 go?
We're showing 100% signal & PSIP info, but no picture and no sound.
Is PBS not sending or did your receiver blow up?

Ted,

Seeing the SkyCam Network on 3-3... I feel like I'm spying on someone! :)

Tayward,
Personally I have the Hughes E86 . This allows you to not only receive OTA (over the air) Digital signals but will also allow you to receive the HD content that DirecTV offers. Right now DirecTV offers HDnet for free on channel 199. They also have HBOHD & ShowtimeHD but you have to subscribe to their respective regular packages. To receive ShowtimeHD you must have a triple LNB dish because it is on the 110 sat. If & when DirecTV launches more HD offerings it will probably be on this satellite. This receiver does have a few shortcomings though; It does not have a firewire connection (for hooking up a HD VCR ), it also can not output both 1080i & 480i at the same time.

An upgrade from the E86 would be the Samsung SIR-T165 . It is more future proof with multiple outputs, but I can not attest to it's performance.

If you feel that you do not need/want DirecTV's HD offerings a basic OTA tuner is all you would need. Maybe the Samsung SIR-T151 , or the Zenith HDV420 , or the soon to be released Zenith HD PVR , TiVo is supposed to release a HD PVR but I am sure it will be quite some time before it hits the shelves.
