Are there any trees or buildings blocking your view of 110-120 degrees from your deck? If so you might be in trouble.

You can get UPN24? Did they do HD last year for enterprise? I think UPN20 did, but I'm not sure about that either.

Going to sign up for Dish Network? PM me for a ClubDish referral number that will give you a $50 credit on your first bill.

Actually I might be the luckiest guy in the world. From looking at that map and from just seeing the back of my building there is a straight shot from the back of my deck all the way down 7 (East = down). Its the only unobstructed view I have. I'll get a compass and double check.

I get 24.1 loud and clear (one of my few Baltimores).

Enterprise was not HD when I watched it last season, but it was a wee bit better Pic quality than WWOR over Dish Network.

Edit: HD Schedule here:

Channel 24 is not HD yet. I have been able to get 24 since they went on the air digitally without a problem, but there is nothing to watch. They use a channel 11 type stretch mode.

I doubt rabbit ears are going to work from Sterling.....A (not that big) 4221 would probably be a much better choice.

I get locals just fine with a Silver Sensor on top of my a/v rack in my basement from Ashburn. Those in sterling should be able to do well without a full antenna mast

Rabbit ears (as the telescoping metal pole antennas are called) are typically associated with VHF reception, not UHF. Unless you use the circular UHF piece associated with the rabbit ears, it is unlikely that you would pick up any OTA UHF signals.

Thhanks for the information about the seemingly widespread HD problem with Comcast. Did they give any timeline on fixing it?

I gradually lost channels as you did - they went in groups, getting worse over time until I lost all HD. Its taken place over the past month

Maybe, maybe not. You have two choices.

1) Buy an antenna and try hooking it up yourself. The only way to know what channels you can get is to try)

2) Write a check

Hi- new to the forums here. I had many of the same concerns about reception when I considered going to OTA HDTV that many people seem to have. To consider the cost of the hardware and the possibility of poor reception is troubling. I will share my experience here in that others might find it helpful and/or encouraging. I live in Prince William county, approx 22-24 miles from most of the transmission towers in the area (according to antennaweb.org). This past Mon. (Sept 20), I installed a Samsung t351 with a Terk TV55. The Terk is mounted indoors on the second floor, attached via wall-mount, facing nearly due-North (NNE would have been ideal..). Without any antenna manipulation I can receive:
4.1
5.1
7.1/.2
9.1/.2
26.1/.2/.3/.4
30.1/.2/.3/,4
50.1
54.1/54.2 were both working last night, both are down at this time

Needless to say, that's alot of content and we are all very pleased! We won't even watch Comcast cable anymore- can't stand the IQ

I use a pair of rabbit ears to pick up UHF OTA HD. It has both the telescoping poles and a circular piece, so for some they do work. Although the best would be an antenna on the roof. However, the rabbit ears will be going away shortly, I got a outdoor antenna (thanks to Bruce!!!) and will be having someone come out an install it soon.

I am new to this, so does anyone know how the NFL on FOX is being broadcast on 5.1? I saw the game last weekend (before the HD tuner) was stated as being 720p-

You'll find the HDTV NFL games on 5.1, 9.2, and 7.1. The 7.1 (Monday Night Football) won't be in DD5.1. WJLA-DT will be adding DD5.1 later this year.

I started watching ER on NBCE (D*) last night, but the lip synch issues were too much to handle. I was actually getting dizzy. So after about 30 mins, I switched to 4.1. However, I did not realize that 4.1 was NOT DD5.1. Any news about 4.1 going DD5.1? Anyone know anything about the "kungfu movie effect" on NBCE?

It wasn't too bad for me, although I did have to adjust the delay on my receiver another 25ms to compensate.

But the game is in HD, right? In that case, I shall watch the game on 2.1, if they are showing it, since they might show in 5.1

WMARDT (2-1) broadcasts MNF in HD and DD5.1. Yes, nearly all the games on Fox this year will be HD. 2-3 per week on CBS.

As others have pointed out, the pilot will be shown in a repeat coming up soon.

I think you also use a MyHD card right? If so, I have the pilot in ".ts" file format if you want to come by with a portable hard drive for a data dump. I "shudder..." don't use VHS anymore....

For those planning to record future episodes of "Lost", make sure to point your antennas to Baltimore.

In the DC/Balt area, anything on ABC worth watching in the first place should ALWAYS be viewed or recorded via WMAR-DT. WJLA-DT often "forgets" to throw the HD switch and does not bother to use a 5.1 encoder.

The difference is night and day. WMAR-DT has earned my respect and loyalty.

Regards,

Sasha Jevtich

WJLA has been pretty good lately with showing programs in HD. At least the few that I have watched over the last several weeks. Hopefully they will have DD5.1 soon though. I can't usually get WMAR unless it's raining.

My question is what do I need to tell them?
They'll come out and figure out what channels I can get but minus what room I want them to route the cable to is there anything else I need to ask?
I just want it to go to one room so I dont need any distribution setup I dont believe. How much might all this cost me?
I live in a condo but am on the top floor so they can mount everything on my roof.
Hi and thanks for your kind words. You should know however that pretty much all of my comments regarding the benefits of OTA antenna installation and use were pretty much aimed at single family home and town home owners, folks that own their own roof, and thus, have great umbrella protection from OTARD.

Apartment and condo dwellers are in a totally different situation, as they typically don't own their roof and thus have more limits.

I would urge you to join your condo board and if applicable, have them consider hiring a pro like AltAntMike to design and install a master antenna system (MATV).

Otherwise you will probably be limited to placing an antenna on your balcony or using an indoor antenna.

Unfortunately, folks that own their own roofs have the most leeway and freedom with regards to antenna use and placement.

Regards,

Sasha Jevtich
