Old News:
  • 12/31/2004: Cyclone: DirectTV adds ABC's NYC & LA HDTV feeds to their distant network offering. Neither Washington nor Baltimore are ABC O&O markets, so not many people around here are going to qualify for these channels.

Is anyone surprised that WJLADT is having problems again? Last night the channel was unwatchable. Constant audio and video dropouts - the worst I've ever seen. Has anyone contacted the station?

Did anyone else notice that WBAL-DT is now sending program info as part of their PSIP? I noticed this last night during the Tonight Show. It seems, however, like this info comes and goes with my RCA DTC-100. Sometimes it's there when you tune in and sometimes it's not. I wonder why...

I see the links to Davis Antenna and Fairfax Antenna at the top of this thread, but they do not appear (from their website anyway) to service the Baltimore area. Can anyone recommend a good installer for Baltimore, specifically Owings Mills?

I have a 6000 so I didn't know that WBAL had started their PSIP. But it does make sense. I had emailed them in the past about being on 59.1 instead of 11.1. They said that they where waiting on a new PSIP Encoder and once that was installed they would be on 11.1. Well sure enough now that they are on 11.1 the PSIP seems to contain more info.

I emailed them to say thanks, but the contact is on vacation. :D

If any Baltimore Antenna links become available, I will post them to the title page.

I do not think that was a good idea to delete the old DC Metro thread. There was a lot of really good information there. Just because we have a new thread is no reason to delete the old one, others who want to read the infromation in that thread should have the opportunity to do so.

Has anyone contacted a moderator to merge these threads or at least rename the original one?

You may want (or not want!) to add Adelphia to the list of cable companies in the area. They serve Frederick County at least...

I wrote 'em an e-mail and also posted a note on their forum yesterday. The forum seems to have deleted the post and no response to the e-mail.

Aside from that, they've been very helpful...

What a riot! I've heard of this happening before. Someone posted on their site and got deleted, possibly because it wasn't the most positive of responses. It would be interesting if someone posted a total positive post, and at later time, posted a total negative one to see what would happen.

Heads up and hats off to WUSA, for they have the least complaints by far of any other local station.

You are the one I remembered....only I didn't remember it being so politely put. Maybe it was your response after the deletion I remember most, therefore giving me the impression you were not happy with their service. In any case, I remember you didn't have a great experience with them.

WJLA has been flakey for the past few nights. I wonder if its time for a reboot of their encoder.

I was going through the local channels between 4 and 5 this afternoon and WJLA seems to be fine. I didn't watch it (Oprah) for more than a few minutes, but there didn't seem to be any audio or video dropouts. It appears that WRC is broadcasting their analog signal on their digital channel (48). The news last night and this afternoon looked terrible, washed out colors and no detail. I called their engineering department but had to leave a message on voice mail.

CycloneGT,

Since noone else mentioned it, let me be the first to thank you for your awesome post to start off this thread. Your compendium of information on DC/Balt digital TV offerings - links & all - is an excellent reference.

I also appreciate the inclusion of both DC AND Baltimore in your thread title.

I can recommend a Baltimore area installer which IMHO you should stay away from. Just my opinion mind you, based upon an experience I had with them back in the beginning of '02 - documented in this old thread.

Unfortunately, they serve most of Carroll County as well. I've been watching & reading about Adelphia's supposed rollout of HDTV in Southern CA with great interest. Here's hoping it's successful & they eventually make their way out to our area with HD service.

I get all my HDTV via an OTA antenna. Satellite is not an option for me due to a thick copse of trees on the south side of my house that are not on my property. Eventual HD support by Adelphia is of great interest to me as well. Soon I hope. At least they're talking about it _somewhere_ in the US.

Have you checked with a satellite company about this? If you are getting OTA, I don't think there should be any reason you can't get satellite reception. I've seen these dishes pointed directly at homes and in some of the most unusual places, and often wondered how in the world they get reception, but they do.

It does appear that WJLADT is working properly agian. Now, if we could just get them to add DD5.1 in time for Monday Night Football (can't get WMARDT from my location). Any suggestions as to how we can pressure them into doing so?

Action Antenna on route one off of 695. I used them about six months ago and they did a great job.

The reason that you see satellite dishes pointed at houses and they still work is: The angle of the dish is misleading. The signal actually comes down a lot steeper than you'd suspect. I wish I had a picture to post showing it. But in the real reason is that while dish looks like its pointing at a house, its actually pointing up high in the sky.

dg28. I get WMAR-DT very solidly in Boyds (Germantown) with a UHF ant inside my attic. I also get 13, 11, 45, 22 also.

Hamster, thanks.

Well, looks like we have one vote for and one vote against Action Antenna. I guess I'll have to check them out and decide for myself. Thanks for the info. Any other installers, good or bad or unknown, that serve Baltimore?

Hamster, thanks.
Which is why the trees Hampster is talking about shouldn't present a problem.

I can see that Cyclone. Trying to avoid doing that for now due to cost of installation, etc. I know it probably wouldn't cost that much but the wife is still recovering from the purchase of the tv and HD box. And I wouldn't attempt to install it myself.

hehe, Yeah, my wife threw a fit too when I got the plasma and the 6000. :D Boy did I get it. :D *Cyclone's super cool computer room with 2 Ethernet jacks and 4 phone lines is now becoming a nursery*

Still. The antenna was the cheap part. I used a Radio Shack 15-2160 UHF Only antenna $22, and a 15-1171 Digital Cable amp. Stuck it in the attic and there it is. The amp was needed for the Baltimore station. I luckily had 3x RG6 Coax cables run up to the attic during construction.

I concur wholeheartedly. I really appreciate your efforts. I am sure they will not be wasted as this transition gathers momentum. Baltimore deserves at least equal billing to DC because their Big Three stations are way ahead of their DC counterparts. I just wish I could dial in WBAL a little better. I'm having Fairfax Antenna back out on the 19th to see if I can get some improvement in my OTA signals from Maryland. I may even have them install a rotor to pick up PAX. I assume they'll have some HD sooner or later. WBAL is strange for me. I normally am able to receive them well enough but lately I've experienced a lot of dropouts. I just in the last week tuned in WMPT for the first time (now that they're at full power) but they are still too weak signalwise. I've gotten them late at night and only sporadically.

It is my desire to eventually drop D* and just go with all OTA. As a four-year customer of theirs, I am extremely disappointed by the increasing compression of their channels. But between my kids' love for Sponge Bob Squarepants and Nickelodeon in general and my mother-in-law's love for the Game Show Network, there's no chance of it happening right away.

On the title of this post, has anyone noticed the declining PQ of WRC's studio newscasts the last few days? It looks like they are using their analog feed. The picture is extremely soft and the colors are washed out. I contacted their engineer, Chuck Lindner, earlier today to express my observation. I didn't get past the receptionist but she said she would make sure it got checked out. Apparently I am the first person to inquire about it. This may be something that has already been resolved. Just in case it is continuing and you would like to let them know what you think, the direct line to Lindner's office is 202-885-4146.

I spoke with another Adelphia employee today, an installer, asking him what, if any, system upgrades they've been doing, when HDTV could be available, etc. He kinda laughed and said that until they are no longer in Bankruptcy court, they won't be spending a dime on much of anything in this area. He jokely said about how they can barely afford to pay the installers.

I just don't see it happening on the East Coast for at least another year or 2.
