Video and audio OK on a Samsung HD TV and a Zenith DTV box - however there is no program guide data - just "Regularly Scheduled Programming" displayed on 66.1, 66.2, & 66.3 - so they may be having some problem with their data stream.

Programming on 66.2 and 66.3 came back last night. Thanks to all those that checked. They must have been having problems with their multi-casting.

Recently channel 66 has made some unknown changes. Channel 66 went out again last week (around July 20, 2014) and is now back on air.

I do get reception on my TV with the built in ATSC in tuner as of July 25, 2014. Channels 66-1, 66-2 and 66-3 work fine on this TV (2011 vintage).

However, my ATSC converter boxes do not work with Channel 66 anymore. All teh boxes worked properly last week. No other broadcast channels have problems with these boxes. Channel 66-1 has picture and no sound, and 66-2 and 66-3 are not available. Reads out as Channel 27 in the setup menu.

Did virtual channel 66 change their broadcast frequency?

Interesting. I went to the WUTF-DT web site to lodge a complaint, and all information is Spanish only. No way to contact them that I could find, so to save time I just made a complaint to the FCC. I used English in my FCC complaint, so there is a 50 - 50 chance that they will understand what I am talking about!

The subchannels were blank for 3 or 4 days. Last night 66-3 was back, but when I tried 66-2 the channel display jumped to 27-2, and the saved presets for 66-2 and 66-3 disappeared on both a Samsung TV and a Zenith DTV converter. 66-1 was OK on both. Scanning did not find 66-2 or 66-3 again. Even odder, today there is no audio on 66-1 on the Zenith box, but the TV is OK. PSIP problem probably. Of course, they may not even be aware of the problem, since they are apparently unreachable behind layers of bureaucracy.

I sent channel 66 an e-mail.

Here is the e-mail address that I used: wutfpublicfile@univision.net

Yup, there is a problem. My boxes are the Insignia brand (AKA Best Buy - Zenith).

I checked out my Sony TV, and this is what I noted. Virtual channels 27-1 and 27-2 are broadcast on channel 29. Virtual channel 27-3 is being broadcast on channel 27 (which is virtual channel 66).

Virtual channels 66-1, 66-2 and 66-3 are being broadcast on channel 27.

The Sony TV works fine.

The Insignia boxes do tune to channel 66-1, but there is only a picture and no sound. No signal on 66-2 and 66-3, and they do not tune in via the programming scan. For 27-3, it does not appear on the channel scan. If I use the remote to dial in 27-3, the Insignia box then shifts to channel 66-1.

Now that I think about it, it looks like it is a WINI-DT channel 27 problem. Virtual channel 27-3 uses channel 27 instead of channel 29 (for PISP information at least).

E-mail: pbias@entravision.com

Whatever data is being transmitted - it is really messed up... Today:

Zenith DTV box:
27-1 Univision (normal)
27-2 LATV (normal)
66-1 UniMas (no audio)

Samsung TV:
27-1 Univision (normal)
27-2 LATV (normal)
27-3 GetTV (audio & video OK - must really be WUTF -3, without PSIP data)
66-1 UniMas (normal, has audio)

Sony TV - not tried until today:
27-1 Univision (normal)
27-2 LATV (normal)
27-3 no signal (description shows "Zuus TV" - may be older stored data in TV)
66-1 UniMas (no audio)
66-2 no signal (description shows WUTF-DT)
66-3 no signal (description shows WUTF-DT)

WUNI is probably not involved in this, but the incorrect display of "27" is likely due to that being the RF channel. It's interesting how the various DTV tuners react. These all share the same roof antenna. I have a DTV Pal box not in use somewhere - might try that too.

My Sony TV (KDL 55-NX720 - 2011 vintage) receives all of the channels in question. Recently, channel 27-3 showed up on my channel list without me doing anything. Based on what I have seen, I assume then error is generated by virtual channel 66 WUTF-DT.

Virtual channel 27-3 is GET-TV being broadcast on channel 27 (programming of virtual channel 66-3). WUTF for sure based on station ID. I doubt that this is a correct virtual channel ID.

Virtual channels 66-1, 66-2, and 66-3 (GET-TV) work as they are supposed to work. Video and audio is normal.

My Insignia box (Best Buy brand - Zenith based box) works the same as your Zenith box. Funny thing is I never watch virtual channel 27.

Today I sent an E-mail to both channels. Let both of them sort out the issue.

Perhaps my e-mails worked (sort of). WUTF-DT now works on all three channels. The only problem is they used channel 27 for the virtual channel.

So now WUTF-DT (RF channel 27) is on virtual channel 27-1, 27-2 and 27-3. WUTF-DT is supposed to be mapped to virtual channel 66-1, 66-2 and 66-3.

WUNI-DT (RF channel 29) is also on virtual channel 27-1 and 27-2.

So now there are two virtual channels 27-1 and 27-2 and as well as a single 27-3 virtual channel.

It appears all is fixed now. 27-1 is WUNI / Univision and 27-2 is LATV. 66-1 is WUTF / UniMas, 66-2 is Bounce, and 66-3 is GetTV. The only thing that is missing is the program guide data, which may not update quickly.

We 'upgraded' to the X1 system from comcast about a month ago...and we have not even bothered to reprogram the DVR.

Looks like I'll be getting the CS2 antenna. Where it will be mounted outside could not possibly be closer to where the cable comes in from the street, so it will be a short run of cable. I am SO looking forward to saying goodbye to comcast for TV! Plan is to go for a week or 2 using OTA signal before actually canceling.

Greatly appreciate your reply, it makes me more confident it will succeed!
Just providing an update on this...I got the CS2 antenna and mounted it in the attic. WLVI did not come in, so I got a booster and that overall works quite well now - however, I should have just sprung for the CS4. Every once in a while WLVI or WHDH will drop out if there is weather between here and the tower, but overall I am pleased. Calling Comcast this past week to drop cable was, by far, the most gratifying phone interaction I have ever had with them

Appreciate the posts and help provided here!

If you want a laugh, today I receiver a response from the FCC on the channel 66 issue.

The FCC gave a lecture on the proper placement and use of a TV antenna, and how to perform a channel scan or "double rescan". So they send me 6 pages of information that has nothing to do with the problem.

Maybe English is a second language at the FCC these days!

Too funny, too sad. The whole world is boiler-plating customer service. The FCC, Comcast, big banks, all the same. One keyword triggers an automated response. You have to go on a crusade just to get a basic "we are aware of the problem and are working on it" response.

Yeah, the Dept of Education is no better. I sent them an email yesterday about a specific student loan issue and all they did was cut and paste an unrelated webpage back to me as a reply.

Funny, Comcast can do it to themselves - they don't need the customer's help. I called them to take advantage of a speed increase promotion for my several year old business-class service. Was told they needed to replace the modem with a newer model - which they did - and it all worked fine. However, this triggered various welcome-new-customer functions, including 2 new customer phone calls, emails with how to set up email..., online bill payment, etc., and oddly, an email on whether the recent service call (to replace the modem) had resolved my "issues"...

Escape added as 66-4 to WUTF

WUTF has added Escape, currently running only a loop of movie previews, on 66-4.

Always happy to see new channels added to free OTA !

Quote:
Escape will look to attract women in the 25 to 54 demographic with crime and mystery programming the network calls “daring and sexy.” Programming will include theatrical movies and off-net series with heroines trying to evade peril that will give female viewers a chance to escape their daily cares.
Hopefully we'll see the Grit channel soon!

Grit will be built around the classic male hero archetype with war and action oriented theatrical movies and off-net series that feature stars like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris.

For some reason, even though they seemed to be paired channels from the same source, Katz, WUTF is only airing Escape. WLNE New Bedford / Providence has both - Grit on 6-2, Escape on 6-3.

any ideas on a good indoor antenna for Cambridge?
I'm up in the air 150', my windows face SE, I have a Terk that measures about 8"x9", and a separate amp, but it's so darn directional and here I get signals from over a 90 degree range. I am not allowed to mount an antenna outside and anyway it would have to be on a rotor. I get good reception but I occasionally lose signals and have to move the antenna. I need an indoor omnidir antenna. does one exist? Thanks all!
EDIT: was just experimenting and it seems that lying flat, up high near the ceiling, and in the WNW part of the apt seems to work better. I just ordered a refurbed FDTV1A and will see how that goes. My prob may have been having it upright... TV is LG 42LE5400

Most antennas that claim to be omni-directional actually are not, so don't expect any miracles. Besides, omin-antennas make for a lousy choice wherever multipath is a problem.

In any event, ALL of Boston's main stations have their transmitters located out near Newton, so, unless your viewing habits include any of the minor stations that transmit from elsewhere, a very DIRECTIONAL indoor antenna is actually what you need. Since you have signals very close by, you should NOT use anything with an amplifier. Terk HDTVi would probably be your best choice. From Cambridge, your aiming direction is southwest.

Thanks.
Besides the usual stuff which is at about 239-242 deg I watch 58.1, 66.1 . but 5, 62, 68 and 44 seem to be random depending on time of day and location of antenna. I am basically shooting through a lot of this building and moving people, steel doors, steel closet doors and the like to get what I want, because I'm toward the NE of the building. Yeah, the 1A. A week... LOL!

Post your TVFool.com report. Looking at a report for cambridge, most of your channels are 229 - 236 which is a pretty narrow beam antenna. Those are all line of site too, so if you can point just about anything out a window or eave facing southwest, you will get a lot of stations. You also have vhf stations in rhode island (187, 209) and new hampshire (330, 360). You could probably pick up either pointing a y5-7-13 in the correct direction. If you could put that y5-7-13 on your roof, you would probably get both.

Further down the list, things get sketchy.

If you are looking for an omnidirectional antenna, the one I linked to gets very good reviews. If you want to talk about getting specific stations from a specific location, start by getting a TVFool report and making a list of the stations you would like to receive.

a yagi has a very narrow beam.
I need about 120 deg, ignoring the stuff up north

I do have Comcast basic since to cancel that would mean my internet would jump by $10 or so, so it would be a wash. I use OTA because I prefer channels like 62 and 66 (virtual) that I don't see on comcast.

I cannot stick anything out the window. not allowed. Eviction. If I could I would have to go straight out maybe 20' and then right angles to that. Not practical in any situation.

HA! - at least for the moment! LOL! after some mistakes I ran a wire along the curtain rods on the SE and S windows - somewhere between 10-15' - making no attempt to keep it straight. I bared the wire end and stuffed it into the center of an F connector adapter to coax to amp and to TV. So nothing to coax shield to balance it. (wire was some old 4-conductor phone type installation wire.) Scan got 42 channels. one from Providence RI comes in solid, the other Providence station is flaky. but there is none of the usual variability on all the others. It's 7PM + here so we'll see what later, and daytime brings before I can call it a solution.

EDIT: well I got the big Terk and tried it in every location and orientation but my serendipitous wire along the curtain rods works much better.
